Modern test and measurement systems must validate connected, software-defined products that move more data, operate at higher frequencies and interact with other devices and networks. That makes fast, simultaneous capture, accurate and stable measurements, strong signal integrity, and flexible, upgradeable systems central requirements—not optional extras.

Why test and measurement is getting more demanding

Digitalization, 5G, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Industry 4.0, cloud computing, analytics, and automation are changing both the products engineers build and the environments in which those products operate. A test setup may need to check not only whether a component works, but how it behaves alongside other signals, devices, networks, and software under realistic operating conditions.

In a TE Connectivity survey of more than 250 engineers across aerospace, automotive, defense, industrial equipment, medical, semiconductor, and wireless communications industries, more than 70% of respondents had over 10 years of professional experience. Respondents identified autonomous driving, the Internet of Things, and electric vehicles as the developments having the greatest impact on test and measurement protocols, followed by evolving 5G technologies and applications. They also cited test complexity, finding suitable hardware components, and rising costs as major challenges. These are findings from that survey, not measurements of every industry or test lab.

As TE Connectivity Global Product Manager Zachary Galbraith put it: “We can almost say that without test and measurement, development and production of any of these electronic devices are impossible.”

What a modern test system needs to handle

More signals, captured together

When a product has several interacting signals, capturing them simultaneously can reveal timing and interaction problems that separate measurements may miss. Channel count matters, but so does whether the system can acquire the channels together at the required bandwidth and data rate. Fast capture and analysis also help engineers manage larger data volumes.

Accuracy, stability, and signal quality

Measurements need to be accurate and stable enough to distinguish a product fault from measurement variation. At high frequencies and data rates, signal integrity and electromagnetic interference (EMI) performance are also important: the test setup itself must not obscure or distort the behavior being investigated.

Bandwidth and application fit

Higher-frequency radar, wider-band communications, and faster digital links place different demands on instruments. Bandwidth, sample or data rate, channel count, dynamic range, and phase noise should be considered in relation to the signal and test objective. A system that meets one application’s needs may not be suitable for another.

Software, connectivity, and growth

Modular and software-defined architectures can make it easier to adapt a test setup as standards, products, and workloads change. For connected or distributed test environments, wireless or remote access may be useful; for automated workflows and data-center infrastructure, software and API interoperability can be essential. Security and deployment requirements also matter, particularly where systems connect to networks or operate in aerospace and defense settings.

How requirements differ by application

Application What testing must address Useful system capabilities
Automotive More connected vehicles and infrastructure, increasingly complex signals, and higher bandwidth and analytics demands. Multichannel simultaneous capture, fast data capture and analysis, and capacity to support higher bandwidth.
Aerospace and defense End-to-end supply-chain reliability and system integrity; extreme operating conditions; radar and spectrum requirements; secure deployments. High-frequency and wide-band measurements, low phase noise, demanding dynamic range, repeatable multichannel acquisition, ruggedness, security, flexibility, and upgradeability.
IoT and industrial systems Precision, interoperability, security, scalability, power use, battery life, RF behavior, coexistence, interference, data transfer, conformance, network readiness, EMI, signal integrity, and connectivity. RF and power measurements, wireless conformance and network testing, scalable setups, and parallel, low-cost instrumentation for mass production.
Data centers and edge infrastructure Higher traffic and faster Ethernet and transceivers, along with virtualized, modular, and edge architectures. High-speed digital testing, component-level monitoring, software-deployable tools, lifecycle management from device to network, API and third-party interoperability, and cloud testing.

Automotive: correlate more of the system

As vehicles and infrastructure become more connected, engineers face more instruments and more types of measurements. The practical challenge is often to capture complex signals together, then analyze the data quickly enough to understand how the system behaves. Bandwidth and analytics capacity should therefore be considered alongside channel count.

Aerospace and defense: preserve reliability in demanding conditions

Testing can span the supply chain and must support reliability and system integrity under shock, vibration, and temperature extremes. Radar and spectrum work raises demands for higher frequencies, wider bandwidths, lower phase noise, and dynamic range. Repeatability, multichannel acquisition, secure deployment, cybersecurity flexibility, interoperability, and upgrade paths also matter. Ruggedness and cost-conscious scaling are part of the system decision, not separate concerns.

IoT and industrial systems: test the device and its interactions

A connected device can meet an individual component specification and still fail in a real deployment because of power use, radio coexistence, interference, network readiness, or interoperability. Test plans may need to cover battery life, RF behavior, data transfer, wireless conformance, performance, EMI, signal integrity, and connectivity. Factory production adds a different constraint: parallel testing and affordable instrumentation can be important when checking many units.

Data centers and edge: test across devices, networks, and software

Higher traffic and faster Ethernet and transceivers increase demand for high-speed digital testing and monitoring. Virtualized and edge infrastructure also makes component-only checks insufficient for some workflows. Teams may need software-based or cloud-deployable testing, API and third-party interoperability, and lifecycle tools that follow performance from device to network.

How to choose or plan a test system

  1. Define the test conditions. List the signals, frequencies, bandwidths, data rates, operating environments, and interactions the product will face in deployment.
  2. Identify what must be measured at the same time. Set the required channel count and simultaneous-capture needs, then consider how quickly data must be captured and analyzed.
  3. Set measurement-quality requirements. Determine the needed accuracy and stability, and assess signal integrity, EMI, phase noise, or dynamic range where the application calls for them.
  4. Check integration and deployment needs. Identify required software, APIs, third-party interoperability, remote or wireless connectivity, cloud or edge deployment, and security controls.
  5. Plan for operating conditions and change. Consider ruggedness where shock, vibration, or temperature is relevant, and whether a modular, scalable, or upgradeable architecture can accommodate evolving standards and products.
  6. Compare total cost of ownership. Include the cost implications of scaling, upgrades, integration, and the instrumentation needed for production or ongoing monitoring—not just the initial system configuration.

These criteria are interdependent. More channels do not help if the system cannot capture them at the required bandwidth; a high-performance instrument may be a poor fit if it cannot integrate with the software workflow or operating environment. Match capabilities to the test plan rather than selecting on a single specification.

Why modularity and interoperability matter

Standards, platforms, and product designs change, so a fixed test setup can become difficult or costly to adapt. Modular, scalable, and upgradeable systems can help manage total cost of ownership by allowing teams to extend or revise a setup as requirements evolve. That benefit depends on the modules, software, and interfaces actually supporting the needed application.

Interoperability deserves the same scrutiny as instrument specifications. In factories, parallel testing and integration with production workflows can affect throughput. In data centers and edge environments, APIs and third-party compatibility can determine whether tools fit into a software-defined validation process. For connected or secure deployments, connectivity must be evaluated together with security requirements.

Common selection mistakes

  • Choosing by bandwidth alone: bandwidth does not address channel count, simultaneous capture, accuracy, stability, signal integrity, or software fit.
  • Testing components without deployment context: IoT and networked products may also need checks for coexistence, interference, conformance, network readiness, and interoperability.
  • Ignoring the environment: aerospace and defense systems may need to remain repeatable and reliable under shock, vibration, and temperature conditions.
  • Overlooking software and security: remote, cloud, virtualized, or connected workflows can impose API, interoperability, and security needs beyond the instrument itself.
  • Comparing purchase cost instead of lifecycle fit: a system’s ability to scale, upgrade, and integrate can affect its longer-term cost as standards and platforms change.
