MeerK40t is free, MIT-licensed, open-source software for controlling compatible laser machines. It began with K40 lasers using Lhymicro M2/M3-Nano controllers and now lists support for several other controller families. Whether it will work with a particular machine depends on its actual controller and connection setup—not just its brand name.

What MeerK40t does

MeerK40t (pronounced “MeerKat”) provides a graphical interface for preparing and running laser jobs, as well as command-line workflows for users who want to automate processes. The project describes its broader aim as providing laser control and an extensible platform for developers. Its documentation says most projects can be executed without the GUI; advanced users can also use an internal console.

MeerK40t is free to use, including for making items for sale, and is released under the MIT license. The project describes financial support as voluntary. See the official MeerK40t project README and project wiki for current details.

Check your laser’s controller before installing

The official project README lists support for the following controller or device families. This is a compatibility starting point, not a guarantee that every machine sold under a familiar product name will work without configuration.

Controller or device family What to check
Lihuiyu M2/M3-Nano (K40) The original target family; confirm the machine has the listed controller and determine its connection requirements.
GRBL Confirm the specific device’s controller and connection setup.
EZCAD2-compatible JCZ galvo lasers Confirm the galvo controller is compatible with the listed EZCAD2-compatible family.
Moshiboard Check the exact board and its driver or connection requirements.
NewlyDraw System 8.1 lasers Verify that the machine uses the listed system and check its setup requirements.
Ruida-controller devices and Ruida emulation Confirm the actual controller and required configuration; the listing alone does not establish identical behavior across machines.

For a K40 laser engraver, the defensible compatibility case is a machine with a Lihuiyu M2/M3-Nano controller. “K40” on a product listing is not enough to establish compatibility. The project’s README lists device families, while its wiki describes the software’s original K40 focus and broader controller support.

Vector and raster jobs are different

MeerK40t’s documentation distinguishes operations by how the laser moves and applies power:

  • Integrated Air Assist System: The built-in 45° air assist auto-adjusts airflow based on laser power. It clears smoke and debris, protects the lens, reduces wood carbonization, and lowers fire risk—especially during high-power cutting jobs
  • Vector cutting and vector engraving: The laser follows vector paths. The operation and its burn strength distinguish cutting from engraving.
  • Vector raster: The laser burns points inside a closed vector path.
  • Image raster: The burn is generated from image pixels.

The project wiki says MeerK40t aims to support SVG 1.1, including selected extensions used by major editors. For K40 machines, the wiki explains that rapid laser on/off switching can vary burn strength, including power that changes with grayscale during raster work. These are descriptions of the project’s approach, not independent performance tests or guarantees for every machine.

Installation options and project status

The project README lists packaged downloads for Windows, macOS, and Linux; Raspberry Pi is covered by extension through the Linux route. It also describes a Python installation route. Packaged builds and a Python installation are distinct approaches, and controller drivers or device setup may differ between machines.

Plan setup around safety, connection, and material

MeerK40t’s beginner guidance treats hardware preparation and software setup as both necessary for quality burns. Before running a job, work through the machine-specific safety guidance and confirm that the software, connection, material placement, and operation settings suit your laser. The project documentation is not a substitute for the laser manufacturer’s safety instructions.

  1. Review safety and prepare the machine. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and the project’s beginner guidance for laser safety and hardware preparation.
  2. Install MeerK40t and establish the connection. Use the installation route appropriate to your computer, then follow the requirements for the actual controller in your machine.
  3. Load your design and choose operations. Decide which paths should be cut or vector-engraved and which areas should be rastered.
  4. Align the material and check the job. Confirm placement and settings before execution, using your machine’s documented safe operating procedure.
  5. Run the burn only when the setup is ready. The wiki’s beginner guidance puts safety, preparation, and understanding the interface ahead of executing a burn.

The project documentation’s key setup point is that “both the hardware and software need to be setup correctly.” Its beginner topics cover safety, hardware preparation, installation, burn basics, the interface, loading a file, setting operations, material alignment, and executing a burn. See the MeerK40t wiki alongside your machine’s own instructions.

When MeerK40t may not be the right fit

Compatibility is the first decision: identify the controller rather than relying on a machine’s marketing name. Then consider the host computer and connection or driver requirements, followed by whether your work involves vector paths, image rastering, or both. The project documentation establishes supported families and broad workflows, but it does not provide a reliable current model-by-model buying comparison.

The project’s public Q&A includes questions such as “Failure to connect to USB port COM 6 and later” and “Meerk don’t work with AtomStack Swift.” Those titles show the kinds of connection and device-specific issues users ask about; they do not establish a universal fix or compatibility answer. Check the exact machine and controller documentation before choosing software.
