MediaTek’s MT8196 has been reported to share the Dimensity 9400’s CPU-core layout, but that does not mean an MT8196 Chromebook contains the exact same complete chip. The “upcoming” framing is also out of date: an ENERGY STAR record lists a Lenovo Chrome 14M9610 notebook with MT8196 and a market-availability date of April 25, 2025. The record confirms a listed model, not that it is currently in stock in every region.
Is MT8196 the same chip as the Dimensity 9400?
Not on the evidence available. In a January 8, 2025 report, Chrome Unboxed said MT8196 was expected in Chromebooks and described a CPU arrangement of one Arm Cortex-X925 core, three Cortex-X4 cores and four Cortex-A720 cores. The outlet noted that this was the same CPU mix as MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400. That supports a comparison of the reported CPU configuration; it does not establish that the complete MT8196 and Dimensity 9400 are identical or interchangeable. Chrome Unboxed’s MT8196 report and MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400 announcement provide context for the comparison.
A system-on-chip includes more than CPU cores. GPU design, clocks, memory subsystem, neural processing, connectivity, firmware and power limits can differ between implementations. The reporting does not establish that Chromebook versions retain every Dimensity 9400 component or feature, so “same CPU mix” is more precise than “the Dimensity 9400 inside.”
Which Chromebook is listed with MT8196?
An ENERGY STAR product record identifies the Lenovo Chrome 14M9610, model 83MW, as a Chrome OS notebook using MediaTek MT8196. It lists 16.0 GB of system memory, eight physical CPU cores, touch support and an available-on-market date of April 25, 2025. The record also gives 83MX and 83MY as additional model information and names the United States, Switzerland, Taiwan, Japan and Canada among markets.

This is evidence of a named, certified notebook model and a listed market date—not a live inventory check or confirmation that every regional configuration is available to buy now. The record’s model numbers should also be kept distinct from retail product names unless a specific SKU is verified.
How does this relate to the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14?
Google announced the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 on June 23, 2025, identifying its processor as MediaTek Kompanio Ultra. MediaTek introduced Kompanio Ultra in April 2025, calling it its most powerful Chromebook processor to date. These announcements show the direction of MediaTek’s Chromebook platform, but they do not explicitly reconcile every ENERGY STAR model number—83MW, 83MX or 83MY—with the retail Chromebook Plus 14 name. Do not assume those identifiers refer to an identical retail SKU without confirmation from Lenovo or a retailer.

Google also described the Chromebook Plus 14 as having “the most powerful AI capabilities on a Chromebook yet.” That is Google’s product characterization, not an independent comparative test. Google’s announcement describes the device, while MediaTek’s Kompanio Ultra announcement lists platform details.
What specifications and performance claims are confirmed?
For Kompanio Ultra, MediaTek specifies 50 TOPS of AI processing, Wi-Fi 7 and support for up to two external 4K displays. The 50 TOPS figure is a vendor specification, not an independent benchmark. These details apply to the Kompanio Ultra announcement; they should not automatically be attributed to every MT8196 Chromebook configuration.

- MediaTek Processor Up to 2.04GHz, 8GB DDR4, 128GB SSD
- 10” WUXGA IPS Touchscreen, ARM Graphics
- 1x USB Type-C, 1x Headphone/Microphone Jack
- Super-Fast Wifi and Bluetooth Combo, Integrated Webcam
- Chrome OS, AC Charger Included, Pastel Grey Color
Google reported “up to 17 hours” of battery life for the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14. That result came from controlled web-browsing tests on pre-production units running ChromeOS version 135.16209.50.0. Google cautions that actual battery life may be lower and varies with use, settings and conditions. It is a test result under specified conditions, not a runtime guarantee.
The sources cited here do not establish an independent benchmark result for an MT8196 Chromebook. Chrome Unboxed’s predictions about a particular GPU, Bluetooth 6 or 8K60 capture were not confirmed for the Chromebook implementation by the official Kompanio Ultra announcement. Those predictions should not be treated as verified MT8196 specifications.

What should you check before choosing an MT8196 Chromebook?
The processor name alone cannot tell you how a particular laptop performs or what it supports. Before buying, verify the exact SKU and compare the whole device, not just its CPU-core configuration.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Processor: MediaTek 8173C.
- 11.6" HD 10-point multitouch, IPS (1366 x 768).
- 4GB Ram; Storage Up to 32GB eMMc.
- Connectivity: WiFi 802.11 AC 2x2, Bluetooth v4.2
- Operating System: Chrome OS
- Identity and availability: Match the seller’s model or part number to the Lenovo product listing or certification record, and check stock in your country. ENERGY STAR’s listed market date does not prove current inventory.
- Memory and storage: Confirm the RAM and storage in the specific configuration; the ENERGY STAR record’s 16.0 GB memory figure is for model 83MW, not necessarily every related model number.
- Display, ports and wireless: Check the laptop’s own specifications for panel details, ports and supported wireless standards rather than inferring them from a processor comparison.
- Battery claims: Look for the stated test method and configuration. Google’s up-to-17-hour figure applies to its controlled test of pre-production Chromebook Plus 14 units, not every MT8196 device.
- Independent performance evidence: Seek reviews of the exact retail configuration if you need measured results. A shared reported CPU layout is not a substitute for device benchmarks.
