Its hosted service announced that it was shutting down on January 28, 2015. The project’s public repository includes self-hosting instructions, but they document an old software stack—not a confirmed way to run MediaCrush safely or reliably today.
What was MediaCrush?
MediaCrush let people upload media and share a link to it. Its historical features included image, audio, video and vector support, along with embeds, albums, an API, HTTPS and ad-free use, according to founder Drew DeVault’s 2014 announcement: MediaCrush is now open source.
The project also described a processing pipeline that detected uploaded file types and converted files into formats suitable for browsers. In a 2013 technical article, DeVault wrote that MediaCrush could take “just about any video, audio, or image format” and make it browser-friendly. That describes the historical service, not a capability available now: MediaCrush.
What happened to MediaCrush?
The hosted service announced its closure for January 28, 2015. The notice, reproduced by ArchiveTeam, said previously uploaded content would remain available at that time and that the open-source project would continue. It attributed the shutdown to exhausted storage capacity and ad revenue and donations too low to justify expanding infrastructure: ArchiveTeam’s MediaCrush entry.

Is MediaCrush still online?
The hosted service is discontinued; the 2015 notice does not establish that old upload links still work today. The available sources do not verify whether archived uploads remain reachable now, so treat an old MediaCrush URL as uncertain rather than as a dependable way to retrieve a file.

Can you self-host MediaCrush?
The source repository includes clone and installation instructions: MediaCrush on GitHub. Its documented setup calls for Python 2, Redis, FFmpeg, ImageMagick and other dependencies, and describes running a web process alongside a worker.
Those instructions are legacy documentation. They do not confirm that the project installs cleanly, works with current systems, or is secure to expose on the internet. Anyone considering it should treat the code as an archival or developer project and independently assess compatibility, dependency security and operational requirements before deployment.
