Use the platform’s official, authenticated API to retrieve a media URL only when you own the video or are authorized to access it—and only for a use the platform permits. Vimeo documents API workflows for files in the authenticated account and for short-lived live HLS playback. YouTube’s API policies, by contrast, prohibit API clients from downloading or storing YouTube audiovisual content without prior written approval and prohibit separating its audio and video components.
A page URL, an API resource URL, and a direct media or playlist URL are different. The right workflow depends on the platform, your authorization, whether you need playback or a download, and how long the returned link remains valid.
First identify which URL you need
A video page URL is meant to open a page in a platform’s player. An API resource URL addresses a record through the platform’s API. A media URL points to playable or downloadable content, which may be a progressive file or a streaming playlist such as HLS. An API request can return a media link, or a redirect that leads to a CDN URL; the API resource itself is not necessarily the media.
Before making a request, answer these questions:
- Authorization: Do you own the content, control the account, or have permission for the particular access and use?
- Platform rules: Does the platform provide an official API workflow for your purpose?
- Goal: Do you need to play the video, download a file, or play a live event?
- Compatibility: Can your player handle the returned format, such as progressive MP4 or HLS? Vimeo’s guide also describes DASH playback links.
- Lifetime: Does the URL expire, redirect, or carry metadata that your application must honor?
A URL that happens to work is not, by itself, evidence that you are allowed to download, store, or reuse the content.

Get a URL for a video in your Vimeo account
Vimeo documents an authenticated API workflow for videos uploaded to the account. Its current file-link guidance is for API release 3.4. Vimeo states that you need a Standard membership or better (with legacy Pro noted), a video on Vimeo, an API application, and an access token with the public, private, and video_files scopes. Check the current [Vimeo requirements and guide](https://developer.vimeo.com/api/files/video-links) before deployment; membership names, permissions, or behavior can change.
Request the video record
Send an authenticated GET to the video endpoint for the video ID, asking for the fields needed by your workflow. Vimeo’s guide describes the play, files, and download fields. The example below illustrates the request shape; replace VIDEO_ID and YOUR_ACCESS_TOKEN with your own values and use the field appropriate to your authorized use.

Requesting all three fields is not necessary in production: request only what your application needs, and follow Vimeo’s current API guide for response structure, authorization, and version details.

Choose the right field
play: Playback-oriented links intended for third-party players. Vimeo’s guide recommends this route for that purpose and shows progressive and streaming forms.files: File links with metadata. Vimeo’s Help Center says these do not expire, but does not recommend them for third-party players.download: Download-oriented links that include download response headers. Use only when downloading is authorized and fits the applicable terms.
These fields are not interchangeable. Choose based on whether your application plays or downloads the video, and confirm the current response format in the [Vimeo API guide](https://developer.vimeo.com/api/files/video-links) and [Vimeo Help Center explanation](https://help.vimeo.com/hc/en-us/articles/12427806914577-About-video-file-download-links-from-the-API).

Vimeo’s Help Center says playback and download links expire after 24 hours. Links returned by the API redirect to CDN locations that have their own time-to-live. Follow the supplied redirects when requesting the media, and use expiration metadata rather than treating a copied CDN URL as permanent. Do not save a transient URL as a durable identifier; store the Vimeo video ID and request a fresh link when needed. Vimeo describes the files field as not expiring, but that does not make its links the recommended choice for third-party playback.
Get a live Vimeo HLS playback URL
Live-event playback is a separate Vimeo workflow, not the same as retrieving a file link for an account video. Vimeo documents its Live API HLS workflow for Enterprise customers. It returns an m3u8_playback_url valid for 10 seconds. The master playlist points to rendition playlists, which then describe media segments.

Use the current [Vimeo Live playback guide](https://developer.vimeo.com/api/live/playback) for the event route, required authorization, and request format. The short lifetime means your application should request the URL immediately before playback and pass it to a compatible HLS player. Do not treat the master playlist URL as a durable link to store or share indefinitely. The documented 10-second validity is a product constraint, not an estimate.
Do not use YouTube’s API as a downloader
YouTube’s official [Developer Policies](https://developers.google.com/youtube/terms/developer-policies?authuser=2&hl=en) state that API clients must not “download, import, backup, cache, or store copies of YouTube audiovisual content without YouTube’s prior written approval.” The policy also prohibits separating, isolating, or modifying the audio or video components made available as part of or in connection with YouTube API Services.

Why extraction scripts are not an authorization workflow
Third-party extraction software is distinct from a platform API: its ability to retrieve a format does not grant permission to copy or reuse it. The yt-dlp [extractor documentation](https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp/wiki/Extractors) describes changing YouTube restrictions and PO Token requirements, noting that some formats or features may be unavailable without externally supplied tokens. That is implementation-specific behavior that can change; it is not a guarantee, platform API, or endorsement. Do not treat an extractor’s success as proof that your use is authorized.

Separate identity from delivery
Keep a stable platform identifier, such as a Vimeo video ID, as your application’s record of the content. Resolve a playable or downloadable URL when you need it. This avoids relying on a CDN address that may redirect or expire.
Choose a compatible player
Progressive files, HLS playlists, and DASH streams require different playback support. Confirm that the player and delivery environment support the format Vimeo returned; a valid URL does not guarantee every browser or player can consume it. For live HLS, use the event workflow and act within its short validity window.

Keep credentials and returned links private
- Do not expose access tokens in client-side code, logs, or public repositories.
- A temporary CDN or playback URL may function like a short-lived access credential. Avoid publishing it or logging it unnecessarily.
- Do not assume an unexpired-looking URL will remain usable; honor expiry metadata and request a fresh link as needed.
- Limit API scopes to the permissions the application needs, while satisfying the documented requirements for the workflow.
Troubleshooting common failures
