Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLinear switches move smoothly, tactile switches add a bump you can feel, and clicky switches add an audible click to tactile feedback. The right choice depends on the feedback and sound you want—and on the force and travel specifications of the particular switch model, not just its category.
What is the difference between linear, tactile, and clicky switches?
A mechanical switch sits beneath a key and actuates as you press it. The labels linear, tactile, and clicky describe the feedback during that movement; they do not specify every aspect of a switch’s feel or sound.
| Switch type | Feel and feedback | CHERRY example |
|---|---|---|
| Linear | Smooth movement without a tactile bump or audible click. | MX Red and MX Black |
| Tactile | A noticeable actuation point creates a bump you can feel, without a click mechanism. | MX Brown |
| Clicky | Tactile feedback plus an audible click. | MX Blue |
These are CHERRY’s descriptions and examples, not a guarantee that every manufacturer’s switch in a given category has identical characteristics. CHERRY’s MX Standard range includes linear, tactile, clicky, and noise-damped variants. Its DIY keyboard guide explains the categories and lists model-specific specifications.
Linear: smooth travel without a bump
A linear switch has no tactile bump or built-in audible click. CHERRY MX Red and MX Black are examples. Choose this feel if you prefer an uninterrupted press rather than a noticeable point of feedback.

Tactile: a bump without a click
A tactile switch provides a noticeable actuation point you can feel. CHERRY MX Brown is an example without the audible click of a clicky mechanism. It can suit someone who wants feedback from the press but does not want a deliberate click sound.
Clicky: a bump plus an audible click
A clicky switch combines tactile feedback with a distinct sound. CHERRY MX Blue is an example. That audible feedback may be satisfying to the person typing, but can be disruptive to others in a shared room.

Which mechanical keyboard switch should you choose?
Start with the feel and sound you want, then check the exact model’s force, travel, and compatibility. Category names alone cannot tell you how heavy a switch will feel or how far it moves.
- Prefer smooth presses: try a linear switch.
- Want a felt bump without a deliberate click: try a tactile switch.
- Want both a bump and audible feedback: try a clicky switch, bearing in mind the people and environment around you.
- Noise matters: look for a model described as silent or noise-damped, and check how it sounds in your own keyboard. No switch type guarantees a quiet keyboard: the board, keycaps, typing style, desk, and room also affect the sound.
If possible, try a sampler or a keyboard with the switch you are considering before buying a full set. CHERRY lists an MX Experience Box containing 10 switches, but check its current contents and whether it suits your needs before ordering; the cited listing does not establish a fixed mix of variants.

How do force and travel vary by switch model?
Actuation force describes the force specified for triggering a keypress. Pre-travel is the distance to the actuation point; total travel is the full distance the key can move. Compare these numbers for the exact variant rather than assuming that all linear, tactile, or clicky switches share one specification.
| CHERRY model | Category | Actuation force | Pre-travel | Total travel | Durability claim |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MX Red | Linear | 45 cN | 2 mm | Not stated in the cited CHERRY material | More than 100 million keystrokes, according to CHERRY |
| MX Brown | Tactile | 55 cN | 2 mm | Not stated in the cited CHERRY material | More than 100 million keystrokes, according to CHERRY |
| MX Blue | Clicky | 60 cN | 2.2 mm | 4 mm | More than 50 million keystrokes, according to CHERRY |
These figures are CHERRY-published specifications for the named models; the pages do not show publication dates in the material available here. They are not independent comparative measurements or lifetime test results. Other variants may differ, so verify the specifications for the precise switch you are considering. CHERRY’s DIY guide lists the Red, Brown, and Blue force and pre-travel figures; its MX Blue product page gives the 4 mm total travel and Blue durability specification, while the MX Black product page describes that linear model.

What should you check before buying replacement switches?
Do not assume a switch or tester will fit every mechanical keyboard. The cited manufacturer material does not establish universal interchangeability. Check that the replacement switch matches your keyboard’s switch format and that the sampler includes switches relevant to the board you want to evaluate.
