If your keyboard software exposes actuation settings, try a deeper actuation point when accidental presses are the problem. Most other controls—including debounce and Rapid Trigger—are advanced or limited to specific keyboards, so change them only when you know what issue you’re addressing.
1. Adjust key-repeat delay and speed in your operating system
Key repeat determines what happens when you hold a key down: after a delay, the character or command repeats. If a held key repeats too quickly, increase the delay before repeat or reduce the repeat speed. If it repeats too slowly, try the opposite.
On Ubuntu, open Settings > Accessibility > Typing and adjust the key-repeat controls. Ubuntu’s help explains that held keys repeat by default and identifies delay and speed as the relevant settings: Manage repeated key presses. Menus differ across operating systems and versions; look in keyboard or accessibility settings if you use another system.
2. Set actuation to suit your typing
Actuation is the point in a key’s travel at which a press registers. It is adjustable only on keyboards whose hardware and software support the feature. A shallower point registers a press earlier; a deeper point requires more travel and may help if you often trigger keys accidentally.

Use the keyboard maker’s configuration utility to find the control. For example, JLab documents per-key adjustment on its Daybreak keyboard and describes deeper actuation as an office-oriented option for users who tend to hit multiple keys. Corsair gives 3.0 mm as a typing example for the K70 PRO TKL, while describing its 2.0 mm default as a general-use balance. Those are manufacturer recommendations for particular products, not universal settings or independently measured results. See the JLab Daybreak switch settings guide and Corsair K70 PRO TKL guide.
Change the setting in small increments and type normally before adjusting again. If your keyboard does not offer actuation controls, there is no software setting that can add the capability.

3. Treat debounce as an advanced firmware control
Mechanical switch contacts can briefly change state more than once as they make or break contact. Firmware debounce filters those transitions so they are not interpreted as multiple presses. It is not a general-purpose typing-feel control.
Debounce values and behavior depend on the keyboard firmware. QMK’s configuration reference shows a DEBOUNCE value of 5; the Ultimate Hacking Keyboard firmware manual documents a 10–50 ms range and a 50 ms default. These figures describe different firmware implementations, not a shared standard or recommended value for every board. Consult your keyboard’s own support guidance before changing firmware settings. QMK documents its options in Configuring QMK: Configuration Options; the UHK reference is the Firmware Reference Manual.

If you experience repeated or missed inputs, diagnose the issue and follow model-specific support instructions rather than lowering debounce to chase a particular feel.
4. Use Rapid Trigger only if your keyboard supports it
Rapid Trigger, also called Quick Trigger by some manufacturers, dynamically changes when a key resets as it moves during a press or release. It is a specialized feature documented for certain magnetic-switch keyboards—not a standard control on all mechanical keyboards and not a requirement for ordinary typing.

Supported models may let you select which keys use the feature or adjust its sensitivity. JLab documents Quick Trigger settings for Daybreak; Corsair’s K70 PRO TKL guide describes separate press and release sensitivity controls. The available options and names vary by keyboard, so use the maker’s instructions rather than assuming another model’s settings apply.

Remapping, macros, and keys that perform multiple actions can make a layout more convenient, but they do not automatically improve typing quality. They change what a key does, so an unfamiliar assignment can make routine typing less predictable.

If you want to try a change, alter one key or behavior at a time and keep a way to restore the default mapping. JLab documents dynamic key functions for Daybreak, and Corsair documents assignments and macros for the K70 PRO TKL in their respective guides.
6. Leave polling rate alone unless you have a reason to change it
Polling rate concerns how often a keyboard reports to the connected device. QMK documents a USB polling interval option, but the available evidence does not establish that increasing it makes typing feel better. Avoid maximizing a technical setting without a specific problem it is meant to solve.
How to make changes without losing a reliable setup
- Identify the symptom. Decide whether the issue is held-key repetition, accidental presses, missed or repeated inputs, or an inconvenient key assignment.
- Change the setting that matches it. Use OS repeat controls for held-key behavior. Use actuation or remapping only if your keyboard supports those options. Treat firmware debounce and Rapid Trigger as model-specific controls.
- Make one change at a time. Type your usual mix of text and commands, then decide whether the change helped or made inputs less reliable.
- Restore the prior setting if needed. Keep track of the original value or save a working profile before experimenting.
Corsair’s guide puts the practical point plainly: “We highly recommend users to tweak and experiment to find the best setup to suit their preferences.” That is manufacturer guidance, not evidence of a single ideal configuration.
When a different keyboard is relevant
Consider a keyboard with configurable actuation only if that is the specific control your current board lacks. Product features are not interchangeable: compare whether adjustment is per-key or global, the supported actuation range and increments, Rapid Trigger support, whether profiles can be saved to the device, and how clearly the configuration utility explains its controls. Corsair documents per-key actuation and device-memory profiles for the K70 PRO TKL; JLab documents per-key selection and Quick Trigger on Daybreak. These examples illustrate different controls rather than a market-wide comparison.
