MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open software standard that lets AI applications connect to systems that provide data and tools. Calling it the “USB-C port for AI” is a metaphor for interoperability: MCP is not a physical port, and adopting it does not automatically make every AI application compatible with every service.
The latest published base specification identified in official MCP materials is revision 2026-07-28. It changes how requests carry protocol information, removes protocol-level sessions from the core, and includes migration and security implications for developers. Whether an integration works still depends on the versions and capabilities supported by its host, server, and SDK.
What MCP standardizes—and what the USB-C metaphor misses
MCP defines a common way for an AI application to connect to systems where useful data and functions live. An MCP server makes capabilities available; an application acting as the host connects to that server and can let a model use those capabilities. The official TypeScript SDK documentation describes MCP as an open standard connecting AI applications to systems that hold data and tools.
The analogy to USB-C is about having a shared interface instead of writing a wholly different integration for every application and service. It does not mean MCP is hardware, that every host implements every capability, or that a server becomes safe merely by speaking the protocol. Implementations still have to agree on supported protocol versions, capabilities, transports, and authorization behavior.

What an MCP server can expose
The official MCP server overview groups server capabilities into three primitives. Their different control roles help clarify what a connection can do; they do not replace a host’s permission system.
| Primitive | Control role | What it is for | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prompts | User-controlled | Reusable templates or instructions that a user can choose to invoke. | A user selects a prepared interaction for a task. |
| Resources | Application-controlled | Contextual data that a client or host can manage or attach for the model. | Providing relevant data as context for a request. |
| Tools | Model-controlled | Executable functions a model can request to retrieve information or take an action. | Calling a function that queries a connected system. |
These labels describe how the primitives are controlled in the overview, not a blanket grant of authority. A tool might only read information, or it might trigger a consequential change. The host’s policy determines whether a requested operation is permitted and whether it requires confirmation.

How a connection works
- The host connects to a server. The AI application establishes an MCP connection using a transport supported by both sides. Integrations can be process-local, such as a stdio-style setup, or remote over HTTP-based transport.
- The server makes capabilities available. Depending on its implementation, it may expose prompts, resources, tools, or a combination. The host and its client logic determine what they support and how to present or use those capabilities.
- The model requests an operation through the host. The model can use available context or request a tool call, but MCP does not itself decide whether the operation is authorized or trustworthy.
- The host applies its controls and handles the result. It can mediate approval, authorization, and how returned data is used. Those controls are application responsibilities, not guarantees supplied by the connection alone.
What changed in the 2026-07-28 base revision
The MCP maintainers’ July 28, 2026 release article identifies 2026-07-28 as the published base revision and describes a shift to a stateless protocol core. In this revision, the initialize/initialized exchange and Mcp-Session-Id header are retired. Instead, each request carries the protocol version, client identity, and capabilities in metadata. Servers may offer server/discover for capability discovery, but it is optional.
This concerns protocol-level session state, not all state in an application. An application may still retain its own state and pass a handle between calls. The change means requests can be routed to any server instance behind a conventional round-robin load balancer without relying on shared storage for an MCP protocol session.

Other notable changes
- Routing and metering: Streamable HTTP requests use
Mcp-MethodandMcp-Nameheaders, allowing gateways to route or meter requests without parsing the JSON body. - Cache hints: Responses to several list and read methods carry
ttlMsandcacheScopehints for client caching. These are hints for clients, not a guarantee that every client will cache the same way. - Operations needing user input: Multi Round-Trip Requests let a server pause an operation with
input_requiredand accept a retry withinputResponseswhen user input is needed. - Tasks: Tasks moved from experimental core functionality into an extension, with polling methods including
tasks/getandtasks/update.
Security: transport, authorization, and trust are separate questions
An MCP connection transports requests and responses; it does not certify that a server is reputable, that its content is safe, or that an operation should be allowed. Assess these separately:
- What is being transported? Identify which resources, prompts, tools, and any extensions the server makes available.
- What may the host authorize? Apply least-privilege access, suitable user approval, and controls appropriate to the consequences of each tool call. A model being able to request a tool is not the same as the user having approved its effects.
- Whom or what does the host trust? Verify the server’s identity and consider how externally supplied content is handled. Protocol compatibility alone is not a trust assessment.
Authorization changes in the base revision
The 2026-07-28 release hardens authorization handling. Authorization servers should return the iss parameter under RFC 9207, and clients must validate it before redeeming an authorization code. Client credentials are bound to the issuer that minted them. Dynamic Client Registration (DCR) is formally deprecated in favor of Client ID Metadata Documents (CIMD), although DCR remains available for backward compatibility in the documented revision.

Extra care for Skills extensions
The separate official Skills extension specification is based on base revision 2026-07-28 or later. It treats remote skill instructions as untrusted input and requires hosts to verify listed file digests and sizes, expose the content’s origin, and use an explicit approval process before loading or executing it. A matching digest only shows that content is consistent with the listing: because the server supplies both, it does not establish that the server or content is trustworthy. This guidance applies to the Skills extension, not to every MCP resource.

A specification release does not mean every installed host or server has adopted it. The official TypeScript SDK v2 page identifies that stable SDK release line as implementing 2026-07-28 and documents server, client, upgrade, and framework-integration paths. Before building or upgrading, confirm the supported revision and migration guidance for the host, server, and SDK in your deployment.

| Area to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Protocol revision on both ends | The 2026-07-28 request metadata and stateless core differ from older session-based behavior. A host and server need a compatible implementation. |
| Session assumptions | Remove reliance on the retired initialization exchange or Mcp-Session-Id for the new base revision; retain application state explicitly if the application needs it. |
| HTTP routing and caching | Gateways and clients may need to account for the new routing headers and the ttlMs/cacheScope hints. |
| Tasks and deprecated features | Tasks are now an extension, while Roots, Sampling, Logging, and legacy HTTP+SSE are listed as deprecated in the release. |
| Authorization and credentials | Review issuer validation, credential binding, and whether an implementation still depends on DCR. |
The maintainers’ release article says deprecated functionality will continue for at least twelve months and describes a year-long off-ramp for the old transport. Treat those as the release’s stated transition period, and verify current support in the implementation you use rather than assuming a universal removal date across products.
Local or remote MCP: choose for the deployment, not the metaphor
There is no single best deployment shape. Process-local stdio-style integration and remote HTTP-based deployment involve different operational and trust considerations, and either choice must be checked against the protocol revision actually supported.
- Process-local: Consider how the host launches and controls the server process, and what permissions that process receives.
- Remote: Consider server identity, authorization, network exposure, gateway behavior, and how tool effects are approved.
- Either way: Select the primitives and extensions the application needs, and confirm compatible host, server, and SDK behavior before relying on a feature.
The August 22, 2026 MCP roadmap says the July revision made a remote MCP server comparable to an ordinary HTTP workload. It identifies agentic messaging, transport hardening, agent identity, improved primitives, and SDK developer experience as upcoming priority areas. These are roadmap priorities, not confirmation that those features are already part of the base specification.
How widely is MCP being used?
The maintainers’ July 2026 release article puts usage at close to half a billion Tier 1 SDK downloads per month and more than one billion total downloads each for the TypeScript and Python SDKs. The material provides no separate audit methodology for those figures, so they are best read as maintainer-reported ecosystem context, not independently audited counts of active deployments or users.
