That mobile Charlie Card is not generally available in Apple Wallet yet: for now, riders can use Apple Pay on MBTA buses and subways with an eligible payment card, not an MBTA transit card or pass.
What the MBTA is testing
The MBTA describes Charlie as a new fare payment system rolling out in stages. Its current test phase focuses on the new Charlie Card, with select participants helping the agency check how the system works for riders. The agency says the new card is planned for use as either a physical card or a mobile card.
The card is intended to cover bus, subway, and ferry travel. Riders are expected to be able to manage balances and reload cash value or passes online, as well as at new Charlie fare vending machines. These features are still in testing or listed as coming soon; they are not all available to the public now. The MBTA’s Charlie page describes the phased rollout, while its fare project information covers the card and planned reloading options.
Can you add a Charlie Card to Apple Wallet now?
No. The current Apple Pay option for Boston transit uses an eligible debit, credit, or prepaid payment card in Apple Wallet with Express Mode. It is not an MBTA transit card stored in Wallet, and weekly or monthly passes are not supported through this route. The MBTA’s separately planned mobile Charlie Card is the feature that could provide a mobile transit-card option, but it remains in testing. See the MBTA’s contactless payment guidance and Apple’s Boston transit instructions.

How current contactless payment works
On bus and subway service, riders can tap an eligible contactless bank card, phone, or watch. Apple says the same payment card can be used on iPhone or Apple Watch when Express Mode is enabled. Keep a physical card separate from the device when tapping: presenting both near a reader can cause a card clash, in which both may be charged.
Which services each option covers
| Payment option | Status | Modes stated by the sources | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contactless debit or credit card, phone, or watch | Available now | Bus and subway, according to the MBTA | Apple says this payment-card route does not cover commuter rail or commuter ferry, and does not add a transit card or weekly or monthly pass to Wallet. |
| New Charlie Card, physical or mobile | In testing; public release planned for later | Bus, subway, and ferry, according to the MBTA | It is a separate transit-card feature, not the existing contactless bank-card option. |
| New Charlie fare vending machines | Part of the staged rollout; listed as testing or coming soon | Stations and bus stops, according to the MBTA | These are new machines in the rollout, not a statement that the new machines are already generally available. |
When will the new card launch, and what will mobile use cost?
The MBTA’s reviewed information says the new features will be released to the public later, but does not give a general-public launch date. It also says a fee will be required to add a new mobile Charlie Card, with the amount to be announced later. Until the MBTA publishes those details, neither a specific launch date nor a mobile-card fee is established.
