The biggest difference is multiplayer: the original Mass Effect 3 includes a co-op multiplayer mode, while Mass Effect Legendary Edition does not. The Legendary Edition instead bundles remastered single-player versions of all three trilogy games and more than 40 DLC packs. For ME3’s finale, it uses the Extended Cut as the default and removes multiplayer and the old companion app as ways to raise Galactic Readiness.

What content does Legendary Edition add?
Legendary Edition is a trilogy collection, not a separate standalone remaster of ME3. EA describes it as including the single-player base content and more than 40 DLC packs from ME1, ME2, and ME3, including promotional weapons, armor, and packs. That makes it a single-package route to the trilogy’s single-player content.
For ME3 specifically, BioWare identified the single-player DLC as From Ashes, Leviathan, Omega, Citadel, and Extended Cut. These are not exclusive to Legendary Edition: EA’s Mass Effect 3 (2012) product page says that edition includes all previously released DLC. The practical distinction is the scope of the package: original ME3 is a standalone game, while Legendary Edition collects all three games and their included content.
Does the original have multiplayer that Legendary Edition lacks?
Yes. The original PC manual documents multiplayer menus for quick match, creating a match, character selection, leaderboards, and reinforcements, along with public and private co-op matches. Legendary Edition does not include this mode; its included content is single-player.

How did Galactic Readiness and the ending change?
In Legendary Edition, Galactic Readiness no longer depends on external activities outside the collection, including multiplayer and the old ME3 companion app. BioWare’s gameplay calibration notes state that fully preparing for the final fight is harder than it was in ME3 with the Extended Cut readiness rebalance.

Readiness if you play only ME3
BioWare says that players who play only ME3 must complete nearly every available option to qualify for an ending without massive galactic losses. Carrying forward choices from ME1 and ME2 is its most reliable route to better results in the final act.
The Extended Cut is not a new Legendary Edition ending
The Extended Cut was already released as ME3 DLC. Legendary Edition makes it the default finale, so the comparison is not simply an original ending versus a newly created ending. The change is that players receive the Extended Cut finale by default in the collection.

How much better does ME3 look and run?
Legendary Edition updates presentation across the trilogy. EA’s 2021 launch announcement lists remastered character models and tens of thousands of textures, along with updated shaders, visual effects, lighting, dynamic shadows, volumetrics, depth of field, and pre-rendered cinematics.
EA also lists collection-wide improvements such as remixed and enhanced audio, hundreds of fixes for legacy bugs, native PC controller support, 21:9 display support, DirectX 11 compatibility, and a unified launcher with shared subtitle and language settings. Weapons and armor DLC progression is integrated as well. These are trilogy-wide updates; they do not mean ME3’s core campaign was rebuilt in the way the first game received more extensive gameplay changes. In particular, the Mako and combat redesigns described for ME1 should not be attributed to ME3.
