How to toggle story-related Scent trails
Use the Hint button to toggle the story-related Scent trails. Its default control is R3. Insomniac describes the change as a toggle, so the notes do not say the trails have been permanently removed.

What changed in update 1.002.001
Insomniac’s October 6, 2026 update notes say the patch adds a new toggle for story-related Scent trails. They add that, alongside previous updates, players have more control over the visibility of “Scents, Audio Cues, and Nightmare Roots based on community feedback.” The new story-related trail toggle should not be read as a setting that disables every sensory cue.
How this follows earlier visibility changes
Insomniac’s September 2026 hotfix notes say the team reduced the opacity of Scent Trails and Audio Sense indicators and was evaluating further improvements. Separately, GamesRadar reported on September 26, 2026 that earlier options covered trails leading to Whisky Bottle collectibles, Nightmare Door Roots, and Material Crate audio clues, while story-critical Senses still appeared. The October 6 update adds a toggle specifically for story-related Scent trails.

The official notes say update 1.002.001 addresses additional community-reported issues related to crashes and bugs. They do not identify the individual issues or enumerate the fixes.
