Start with Startup Battle, learn the Light, Medium, and Heavy attack buttons, and get comfortable guarding before adding counters or team switches. MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a 4v4 tag-team fighter, but you do not need to learn every character or team mechanic at once.
Where should a beginner start?
Use the in-game Startup Battle onboarding. Its Basics section teaches fundamentals with one character; Assemble introduces team mechanics and cooperative actions. If you already know fighting-game basics, the official beginner guide says you can skip Basics and begin with Assemble. The PlayStation.Blog guide was published July 20, 2026, ahead of the Open Beta, so its beta dates are past, but it remains the clearest official guide to these beginner mechanics: PlayStation.Blog’s beginner’s guide.

When choosing a character, check the in-game EASE OF USE stars: more stars indicate an easier character to use. The guide identifies Captain America, Ms. Marvel, and Wolverine as beginner-friendly; Iron Man and Spider-Man are also relatively easy to learn. Storm and Danger are described as more advanced. It is also reasonable to start with a favorite and broaden your roster as you learn.
What do the attack buttons and combo notation mean?
The official guide uses PlayStation button notation: Light = □, Medium = △, Heavy = ○. An arrow means press the next input in sequence. These are starter Link Attack examples, not guaranteed optimal combos for every character or situation:

- L→L→L→L: a Light chain that can lead into a Skill and trigger a Break.
- M→M→M: a Medium chain that leads into a powerful Super Skill.
- H→H→H: a Heavy chain that leads into an Ultimate Skill.
For a first practice goal, repeat one chain until you can enter it consistently. A successful string is a starting point for learning timing, not a complete plan for every exchange.
Quick Skills or Command Inputs?
Quick Skills execute a skill with one button press, making them a straightforward way to learn what a move does. Command Inputs use traditional motion inputs; PlayStation says they deal slightly higher damage and generate more Skill Gauge. No numerical damage or gauge values are specified in the official material.
| Input option | How it works | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Quick Skills | One button press executes a skill. | Easier to execute; the official pages do not assign the higher damage or Skill Gauge generation to this option. |
| Command Inputs | Traditional directional motion inputs. | More execution involved, with slightly higher damage and more Skill Gauge generation, according to PlayStation. |
Begin with Quick Skills if motion inputs distract you from learning movement, attacks, and defense; experiment with Command Inputs when you are ready. You can customize the Quick Skill button in settings.

How do you guard and use the two featured defensive options?
Learn ordinary guard first. Hold ← to guard standing, or ↙ to guard crouching. Then practice each special defensive option in its own context:
Assemble Counter: press □+× while not guarding
Assemble Counter performs a backstep. If the opponent attacks during the maneuver, it automatically counterattacks. It is not the same input context as Crossover: use it while you are not guarding.
Crossover: press □+× while guarding
Crossover calls in a teammate to interrupt the opponent and create an opening. Here, the same button combination is used while guarding. The distinction to remember is simple: not guarding for Assemble Counter; guarding for Crossover.

How do assists and character switches work?
Think of the team mechanics as a layer to add after you can attack and guard with one character:
- × calls an Assemble Assist.
- A directional input with L2 switches characters. The guide maps neutral or → to the second teammate, ↓ to the third, and ← to the fourth.
- After an assist, watch for the “Switch?” prompt. It signals a brief chance to press L2 and switch.
Get comfortable calling an assist on its own before practicing assist-to-switch techniques. For a team-building starting point, the guide suggests pairing close-range and long-range specialists as one possible approach, while encouraging players to experiment with characters they enjoy.
Where can you practice without match pressure?
Use Training Mode to repeat inputs and simple combos, create custom bots, and adjust CPU settings. The current PlayStation combat page describes those practice options and the game’s combat systems: MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls combat.

Try this short progression:
- Complete Startup Battle Basics and practice Light, Medium, Heavy, standing guard, and crouching guard.
- Repeat one basic Link Attack until its timing feels familiar.
- Practice Assemble Counter while not guarding, then Crossover while guarding.
- Add an Assemble Assist; once it feels reliable, respond to the “Switch?” prompt with L2.
- Repeat the sequence in Training Mode, using a custom bot or adjusted CPU settings if useful.

The button examples above use PlayStation symbols. PC players should check their displayed bindings rather than assume those symbols map to a particular keyboard or controller layout. The US PlayStation FAQ says PS5-compatible arcade sticks and leverless controllers can be used, and that button inputs can be customized from Character Select or the mid-match Pause Menu. That FAQ establishes PS5 compatibility; it does not establish compatibility for a particular peripheral on PC. See the PlayStation game page and FAQ for the platform-specific information.
An arcade stick or leverless controller is an optional input preference, not a requirement to learn the game.
