The Marshall Acton III is a compact, mains-powered home speaker with Bluetooth 5.2, a 3.5 mm analog input, and tactile top-panel controls for volume, bass and treble. It is not a portable or smart speaker: Marshall lists no battery, Wi-Fi, microphone, voice command, water resistance or RCA input. Those distinctions make it a better fit for a fixed indoor listening setup than for outdoor use, voice control or direct connection to every TV and turntable.

What the Marshall Acton III is—and what it is not

Acton III is the smallest model in Marshall’s Home Line III family, according to the company. It measures 260 × 170 × 150 mm and weighs 2.85 kg (6.28 lb). Marshall lists a mains lead in the box and a 100–240 V power input, but no battery operation. Treat it as a home speaker that needs a power outlet, not as a grab-and-go Bluetooth speaker.

Marshall lists the Acton III as released in 2022. Its official product page remains the source for the specifications below; it does not establish current local pricing or availability, nor whether a newer generation is available in a particular market.

Connections and everyday controls

Bluetooth and wired audio

The listed wireless connection is Bluetooth 5.2, with a range Marshall specifies as 10 m / 30 ft. That is a manufacturer-stated range, not a guarantee for every room: walls, interference and the connected device can affect a Bluetooth link.

Marshall Acton III Bluetooth Home Speaker - Black
  • ROOM-FILLING SOUND: Acton III has an even wider soundstage than its predecessor, delivering immersive, room-filling Marshall signature sound.
  • PAIR, PLAY AND TURN IT UP: Acton III is straight to business, so you can just pair and play without the hassle of a complex set-up
  • NEXT-GENERATION BLUETOOTH: Acton III is ready for the future of Bluetooth technology and has been built to deliver next-generation Bluetooth features the moment they are available
  • ICONIC DESIGN THAT STANDS APART: Marshall has taken its signature rock ’n’ roll home speaker line-up and given it a stripped-back look that makes a loud statement
  • A MORE SUSTAINABLE APPROACH: While staying true to the iconic design that speaks to the brand’s heritage, Acton III has a PVC-free build that comprises 70% recycled plastic and only vegan materials.

For wired playback, the speaker has a 3.5 mm analog input. Marshall’s manual instructs users: “Plug in an analogue audio device with a 3.5 mm stereo jack.” The source button switches between Bluetooth and AUX. A component that only has RCA outputs cannot plug directly into the Acton III; check whether it also offers a compatible headphone or line output, or whether you need an appropriate adapter.

Controls on the speaker

The top panel provides source selection, volume, bass and treble adjustment, playback controls, and a power switch. Marshall says Bluetooth playback can be controlled from the panel, including play/pause and track navigation. These physical controls are useful if you want to adjust the speaker without relying on an app.

Marshall Bluetooth app

The Marshall Bluetooth app is available for iOS and Android and provides additional settings and over-the-air software updates. It is optional for basic operation. Marshall support says: “We recommend that you use this product together with the Marshall Bluetooth app for the best user experience, however the speaker also works without the app.”

What the published audio specifications tell you

Marshall lists stereo output, a bass-reflex cabinet, a 45–20,000 Hz frequency range and a maximum sound-pressure level of 95 dB at 1 m. Its amplifier configuration is one 30 W Class D amplifier for the woofer and two 15 W Class D amplifiers for the tweeters. These are manufacturer specifications; they are not independent listening-test results. Frequency range, amplifier wattage and a maximum SPL figure alone cannot establish perceived tonal balance, bass impact, distortion, or how loud the speaker will sound in your room.

Who should—and should not—consider it

A plausible fit

  • You want a compact speaker for a fixed indoor location and have a nearby power outlet.
  • Your audio sources can connect over Bluetooth or provide a 3.5 mm stereo analog output.
  • You value direct source, tone and playback controls on the speaker itself.

Reasons to look elsewhere or check your setup

  • You need portability: Marshall lists no battery, and the 2.85 kg unit uses mains power.
  • You want a smart speaker: Marshall lists no Wi-Fi, microphone system or voice command.
  • You plan to use it outdoors or near water: Marshall lists no water resistance.
  • Your turntable or other component has RCA-only output: the Acton III has no RCA input. Confirm that the source has another suitable output or plan for an appropriate adapter.
  • You mainly need TV audio: Acton III has no HDMI. Marshall identifies Woburn III as the only Home Line III model with HDMI, so compare the connection you need before choosing a speaker.

How it compares with Stanmore III and Woburn III

Marshall describes the main differences across Acton III, Stanmore III and Woburn III as their size and driver/amplifier configurations, intended to suit different room sizes and loudness needs. The official information cited here does not provide independent comparative listening results, so those distinctions should not be read as proof that one model sounds better. Marshall also says Acton III lacks RCA input and Woburn III is the only model in this family with HDMI.

If you are weighing the larger models, start with the physical space available and the inputs your source devices require. The product information does not establish a current price comparison or a tested performance ranking.

Verdict

The Acton III’s appeal is its straightforward mix of Bluetooth, 3.5 mm AUX and hands-on controls in Marshall’s smallest Home Line III speaker. Its limits are equally clear: mains power, no smart-speaker features, no water resistance, and no RCA or HDMI input. It is worth considering when those connections and controls match your setup; the published specifications alone are not enough to judge its sound or value.
