Hardware emulation and FPGA prototyping are increasingly important in semiconductor verification because complex SoCs must be checked alongside growing software loads, peripheral counts, and high-speed I/O—before final silicon exists. They are complementary approaches: emulation is geared toward accelerated verification and debug, while FPGA prototyping is commonly used for early software development, system validation, and hardware-software integration. Vendor announcements show platforms evolving to address those workloads, but the available evidence does not establish a neutral market-share ranking, an emulation-specific market valuation, or a universal performance winner.

What is driving demand for hardware emulation?

Semiconductor designs are becoming larger and more demanding to verify. Siemens identifies five application areas contributing to this pressure: data center networking, communications and 5G, autonomous driving, storage, and AI and machine learning. It points to increasing design complexity and size, more peripherals, higher computing requirements, rising I/O activity, and the need to manage energy consumption as factors affecting verification.

Siemens frames these trends as encouraging adoption of emulation platforms, but its white-paper overview does not quantify how much each factor contributes to demand or provide a market-growth rate. It summarizes the effect this way: “The cumulative effects of these trends impact dramatically the design verification landscape and foster widespread adoption of hardware emulation platforms.” (Siemens, Market-driven trends in hardware emulation.)

Where emulation and FPGA prototyping fit

Both technologies can help with SoC integration verification, when hardware and software are brought together for the first time. They are not interchangeable workflow labels: platform choice depends on the validation stage, the need for software execution, and the tools a team intends to use.

Hardware emulation

Synopsys describes its ZeBu platform as accelerating thorough verification of complex SoCs and providing extensive debug capabilities. In a typical verification workflow, emulation helps teams exercise designs and investigate behavior at scale before manufactured silicon is available. Those descriptions are vendor-provided rather than independent comparative test results. See Synopsys’ emulation and prototyping overview.

FPGA prototyping

Synopsys describes HAPS FPGA prototyping as supporting early software development, system validation, and hardware-software integration. That makes prototyping relevant when teams need to work with software on a hardware implementation before final silicon. The same product overview presents HAPS alongside ZeBu as part of a hardware-assisted verification portfolio, while distinguishing their stated roles.

Virtual and hybrid approaches

Siemens describes Veloce as combining hardware for emulation and prototyping with virtual and hybrid capabilities intended to support early software-driven verification. A combined workflow may be relevant when a project needs different forms of validation at different stages; the source does not provide a neutral performance or cost comparison against other vendors. Details are available on the Siemens Veloce hardware-assisted verification platform page.

What current platform announcements indicate

On March 11, 2026, Synopsys announced software-defined updates across its hardware-assisted verification portfolio, including 12-FPGA configurations of HAPS-200 and ZeBu-200. The announcement says ZeBu Server 5 can achieve “up to 2x” performance improvement and “up to 2x” capacity scaling through modular hardware-assisted verification. These are Synopsys claims, not independently verified or directly comparable benchmarks; the announcement does not establish that every configuration or workload will achieve those gains. Read the March 11, 2026 Synopsys announcement for the company’s details.

The broader direction is toward platforms that support multiple verification stages and workloads, with flexibility across emulation, prototyping, and software-driven validation. The announcement is evidence of one vendor’s product strategy, not proof of a market-wide ranking or that its approach is the best fit for every team.
