Choose an unmanaged switch if you only need more Ethernet ports on one simple network. Choose a managed switch if you need features such as VLANs, traffic controls, monitoring, security settings, or administration across multiple switches. A smart or easy-managed switch sits between them when you need only a few basic controls.

“Managed” does not mean faster. Speed, port count, PoE, and uplinks depend on the individual model; the main difference is how much control and visibility the switch provides.

How do managed, unmanaged, and smart switches differ?

An Ethernet switch connects wired devices on a local network. The management category describes whether—and how extensively—you can configure and monitor the switch. It does not, by itself, tell you the switch’s speed, capacity, or power features.

Category Setup Configuration and visibility Typical fit
Unmanaged Plug in and use; no settings to configure. Little or no per-port visibility or configuration. VLANs and QoS controls are generally absent. Adding ports to a simple home or office network.
Smart or easy-managed Basic configuration through a web interface or utility, depending on the product. Some models offer basic VLAN, QoS, statistics, monitoring, or security features; support varies. A small network that needs a limited set of controls.
Fully managed Broader configuration, through a web interface, command line, or controller depending on the product. May offer more extensive VLAN, QoS, monitoring, security, redundancy, and administration features. The exact set is model-dependent. Networks that need segmentation, policies, troubleshooting, or wider administration.

This is a category-level comparison, not a guarantee for every product. Cisco describes unmanaged switches as “designed to just plug in and run, with no settings to configure” in its managed-versus-unmanaged switch comparison. Check the specific model’s documentation before assuming it includes a feature.

NETGEAR 5-Port Gigabit Ethernet Easy Smart Managed Network Switch (GS305E)
  • GIGABIT ETHERNET PORTS: Features 5 x 1.0Gbps Ethernet ports for high-speed connectivity. Auto-negotiating ports detect the optimal speed for connected devices and work with existing Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cables.
  • EASY SMART MANAGED NETWORK SWITCH: Intuitive software interface offers Easy Smart Managed Essentials capabilities to configure VLANs, prioritize traffic with QoS, monitor ports, and manage network security for small businesses.
  • FLEXIBLE MOUNTING OPTIONS: Compact metal design supports desktop or wall-mount placement for versatile installation.
  • SILENT & ENERGY-EFFICIENT OPERATION: Fanless design ensures silent performance, while IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet reduces power consumption without compromising high-speed network performance.
  • REGIONAL COMPATIBILITY: Made for use in U.S. & CA only

Which type should you choose?

Choose unmanaged for straightforward port expansion

An unmanaged switch is usually the simplest choice when all devices can stay on one network, you just need more wired connections, and you do not need per-port settings or monitoring. This commonly suits basic home setups and simple office expansions.

Choose smart or easy-managed for a few basic controls

Consider this middle tier if you need a limited feature such as a basic VLAN or port-based QoS, but do not need the broader configuration and administration offered by a fully managed product. Confirm that the exact model supports your intended configuration; “smart” and “easy-managed” do not guarantee a standard feature set.

NETGEAR 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Easy Smart Managed Network Switch (GS308E)
  • PLUG-AND-PLAY GIGABIT MANAGED SWITCH: 8 x 1Gbps auto-negotiating ports work the moment you plug in — full-gigabit speed over Cat5e/Cat6 cabling.
  • MANAGED, WITHOUT THE COMPLEXITY: Easy Smart web GUI on Windows, Mac or Linux — no app or Windows-only utility, unlike many competing switches.
  • SEGMENT & PRIORITIZE TRAFFIC: Up to 64 VLANs, QoS, IGMP snooping and port mirroring keep voice, video and data fast, secure and organized.
  • BUILT-IN PROTECTION: Auto DoS prevention, loop detection, broadcast storm control and cable test keep your network stable and easy to troubleshoot.
  • RELIABLE 24/7 BACKBONE: Rugged fanless metal housing runs cool and silent at 0 dBA — the managed switch trusted in homes, offices and small business.

Choose fully managed when the network needs control or visibility

A managed switch is the better fit if you need to separate groups of devices into VLANs, apply traffic policies, monitor links, troubleshoot problems, use security controls, or administer several switches or sites. Make sure someone can configure, document, and maintain those settings. A managed switch adds operational work, and features that are not needed or maintained add little value.

Choose PoE only when the switch must power devices

If the switch needs to power access points, cameras, VoIP phones, or similar equipment, select a model with the required Power over Ethernet support. Check its PoE standard, per-port limits, and total power budget; the word “PoE” alone does not establish that it can power all connected devices.

What to check before buying

Compare the requirements of the network and connected devices against the specifications of the exact switch model:

  • Ports and link speed: Confirm the number of ports and Ethernet rate each device needs.
  • Uplinks: Check the uplink type and speed needed to connect to the router, another switch, or other network equipment.
  • PoE: If needed, match the PoE standard, per-port limits, and total power budget to the devices being powered.
  • Management method: Check whether configuration uses a web interface, command line, utility, or controller, and whether that fits how you will administer the network.
  • Required features: Verify the specific VLAN, QoS, monitoring, security, or redundancy capability you need. A generic managed label does not confirm support.
  • Physical fit: Consider fan noise and form factor for the intended location.

If the switch must fit into an existing VLAN design, confirm its tagging and trunk/access behavior works with the router and access points. A switch that lacks a required capability cannot gain it simply by being described as managed.

What managed switches can—and cannot—do for QoS

Quality of Service (QoS) prioritizes selected traffic; it does not create extra bandwidth or guarantee faster internet. The available controls depend on the switch and on how traffic is marked and handled across the network.

NETGEAR’s QoS guidance says most unmanaged switches do not use or change QoS, although some may honor priority tags. Smart switches may allow basic port-based queues, while Layer 2 managed products can set and honor DiffServ markings. Implementations vary by model.

  • 16 10/100/1000Mbps RJ45 Ports
  • Plug and play, with No configuration required
  • Durable metal casing of superior quality and Professional appearance
  • Intelligent management via a web user interface and downloadable Utility
  • Green technology reduces power consumption

QoS only helps when configured and supported along the relevant traffic path. NETGEAR also cautions that adding a QoS switch alongside a QoS router does not necessarily improve internet performance: the bottleneck may be elsewhere in the network.

Does a managed switch replace a router?

No. A switch connects devices within a local network; a router connects networks and commonly handles the connection between a home or office network and the internet. A managed switch adds configuration and visibility options, but it does not automatically improve an internet connection or replace the router’s role.
