Use Malwarebytes Scam Link Check for a quick, consumer-friendly verdict and suggested next steps; use VirusTotal when you want to inspect multiple security vendors’ findings and the URL is safe to submit publicly. Avoid submitting confidential, sensitive, or personally identifying links to VirusTotal’s public service, which shares analyses. Malwarebytes’ launch announcement does not establish its URL-retention or sharing terms, so it cannot be called more private on that evidence. Neither tool has an established accuracy advantage from an independent head-to-head test.
Malwarebytes Scam Link Check vs. VirusTotal at a glance
| What matters | Malwarebytes Scam Link Check | VirusTotal public service |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | A simple consumer check with an explanation and suggested next steps. | Reviewing partner-specific detections and report context for a URL that is safe to submit publicly. |
| What the result shows | Malwarebytes says it returns a safe, dangerous, or unknown verdict, a screenshot, plain-language reasons, and recommended next steps. (Malwarebytes announcement, October 5, 2026) | Partner findings from antivirus scanners, URL and domain blocklists, and other analysis tools, plus report context. (VirusTotal: How it works; VirusTotal: Reports) |
| Coverage described by the provider | Malwarebytes describes checks for malicious sites, phishing pages, freshly registered domains, and redirect chains; it does not give a partner-count comparison in the announcement. | VirusTotal says it inspects URLs with more than 70 antivirus scanners and URL/domain blocklisting services, alongside other analysis tools. (VirusTotal: How it works) |
| Public submission privacy | The launch announcement does not state URL retention, visibility, or sharing terms; those terms are unknown from that source. | Public searches and submissions are sharing-oriented: analyses and reports enter VirusTotal’s dataset, and submitted information may be shared with examining partners, the public community, and premium customers. Do not submit sensitive URLs. (VirusTotal: How it works; VirusTotal: Searching) |
| Freshness | Malwarebytes describes its checking process, but the launch announcement does not specify a report timestamp or a guarantee that a result reflects a later visit. | URL search can return the most recent report VirusTotal has for a normalized URL. Check the report’s date; a report is a snapshot, not a guarantee about what will load when you click. (VirusTotal: Searching; VirusTotal: Reports) |
Which checker should you choose?
Choose Malwarebytes for an explanation you can act on
Malwarebytes announced Scam Link Check as a free web tool on October 5, 2026. The company says you can paste a URL without downloading software, paying, or logging in. Its result is designed for a consumer who wants a plain-language assessment, a screenshot of the site, and advice about what to do next. These are capabilities described by Malwarebytes, not independently verified comparative test results. (Malwarebytes announcement)
Choose VirusTotal for multiple vendor signals
VirusTotal is more useful when you want to see which participating scanners or blocklists flag a URL and review other report details. Its documentation describes an aggregation of vendor tools and community contributions, not a single definitive safety judgment. A larger number of engines is not proof that the result is more accurate, and one flagged result is not by itself a complete explanation of risk. (VirusTotal: How it works; VirusTotal: Reports)
Do not use VirusTotal public search for a sensitive link
A URL can contain private information even when it looks ordinary. For example, a link may include a personal access token or a unique invitation or password-reset identifier. VirusTotal says public searches store analyses and reports and describes sharing submissions with partners and the community; submitted content may also be available to premium customers. Do not put such a URL into the public service. (VirusTotal: Searching; VirusTotal: How it works)

Malwarebytes’ announcement does not explain whether submitted URLs are retained or shared. That omission does not establish that the service keeps URLs private or deletes them, so do not treat it as a privacy guarantee. (Malwarebytes announcement)
How to check a suspicious link without opening it
- Copy or preview the link without visiting it. On a phone, Malwarebytes’ FAQ recommends pressing and holding a link to preview or copy it. Avoid tapping through to the destination.
- For a quick consumer verdict, use Malwarebytes Scam Link Check. Paste the URL into the tool; Malwarebytes says no login or download is required. Read the verdict, screenshot, explanation, and suggested next steps. (Malwarebytes announcement)
- For multiple vendor findings, use VirusTotal only if the URL is safe to disclose. Review the individual detections and report context rather than treating the aggregate page as a guarantee. (VirusTotal: How it works)
- Check when the result was analyzed. VirusTotal URL search may show the latest report it has for a normalized URL, which is not necessarily a fresh visit. A clean result is limited evidence, and a destination can change after analysis. (VirusTotal: Searching; VirusTotal: Reports)
- If you already opened the page, do not enter information there. Malwarebytes says its tool provides recommended next steps; follow those rather than supplying credentials or payment details to a page you distrust. (Malwarebytes announcement)
How to interpret a result
A safe or clean result is not a guarantee
A checker’s result describes available signals at a point in time. VirusTotal’s URL search returns the latest report it has for a normalized URL, and vendor blocklist updates can flow into user-facing verdicts. The report may not reflect a new redirect, changed page, or what your browser would encounter at the moment you click. Check the analysis date and treat a clean finding as one piece of evidence, not proof that a link is harmless. (VirusTotal: Searching; VirusTotal: How it works)

Multiple detections provide context, not a universal score
VirusTotal’s value is the visibility it provides into separate partner findings and other report details. The number of vendors that flag a link can help you investigate, but the documentation does not establish an accuracy guarantee or a rule that converts engine count into certainty. Neither the available Malwarebytes announcement nor the VirusTotal documentation cited here establishes which service detects more scams or produces fewer false positives. (VirusTotal: How it works; Malwarebytes announcement)
VirusTotal Private Scanning is a separate option
Organizations that need private analysis can consider VirusTotal Private Scanning, a paid service requiring specific privileges. VirusTotal says private URLs and reports remain visible only within the organization for a limited retention period. However, private analyses omit the multi-antivirus and URL-scan partner verdicts that make public VirusTotal useful for broad vendor comparison. It is therefore a different, organization-scoped workflow—not a private mode to assume is available in the public checker. (VirusTotal: Private Scanning)

Bottom line
For a straightforward explanation and next steps, start with Malwarebytes Scam Link Check. In either case, verify the report date where available and do not treat a clean result as permission to trust a link blindly.
