To let clicks, taps, and other pointer input pass through a decorative overlay to the content beneath it, set pointer-events: none on the overlay. A layer can intercept input even when it is transparent; visual appearance alone does not control which element receives pointer events.
Why a transparent overlay can block clicks
Browsers hit-test the layers at the pointer’s position. An element positioned above another can become the pointer-event target even if it looks empty or has a transparent background. The archived CSS-Tricks discussion describes this problem with decorative generated shadows laid over a scrollable area: the decoration looked right but got in the way of clicking, dragging, and touching the content.
The original author called the desired effect “phantom” elements: decoration that is visible but does not physically interfere with events. The discussion is historical context; CSS-Tricks says its forums ran from 2008 to 2020 and are now closed as an archive. For the current behavior, see MDN’s CSS pointer-events reference.
Make the overlay pass pointer events through

}With this value, the overlay is generally ineligible as the target of pointer events, so the browser can target what is underneath it instead. This is the appropriate choice for visual effects such as shadows or ornaments that should not receive pointer input.
What pointer-events: none does—and does not—change
- It affects pointer targeting. Pointer input can pass through the overlay to an element beneath it.
- It does not remove keyboard focus. MDN notes that an element with this value may still receive focus through sequential Tab navigation. Test keyboard access separately.
- Descendants can still be targets. A descendant may be made eligible for pointer events; when an event targets that descendant, listeners on the parent can still run during capture and bubbling.
Keep controls out of a purely decorative layer unless you deliberately want descendants to receive pointer input and have accounted for event propagation.

When this is not the right fix
If the overlay itself is supposed to be interactive, do not disable its pointer targeting indiscriminately. Decide which parts are decoration and which are controls, then apply the property to the decorative layer or relevant descendants accordingly.
Changing opacity or using a transparent background is not equivalent: those choices affect appearance, not the pointer-targeting behavior described here. Use pointer-events when the requirement is for input to reach the layer beneath.

Browser availability
MDN labels pointer-events widely available and states that it has been available across browsers since July 2015. That broad compatibility statement does not guarantee identical support for every less-common value; consult the compatibility details on MDN’s reference if using values beyond none.
