In the Nintendo 64 version of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, equip a transformation mask from the Masks Subscreen by assigning it to a C Button, then press that C Button to change Link’s form. Deku Link flies briefly and hops across water, Goron Link rolls and pounds the ground, and Zora Link swims quickly underwater and can create a magic-powered electric barrier. The Nintendo 3DS remake has different item and camera controls, so do not assume the N64 button mappings apply.
How to equip and use a transformation mask on Nintendo 64
- Press START to open the subscreen.
- Open the Masks Subscreen and move the cursor to the mask you want.
- Set the mask to one of the C Buttons.
- Return to the game and press that C Button to put on the mask.
The manual distinguishes ordinary masks, which do not change Link’s form, from masks that transfer the power of another tribe. A transformation grants abilities specific to that form. The blue Action Icon shows the action currently available; movement is controlled with the Control Stick, and running off many low ledges triggers an automatic jump. Button functions depend on the form and situation, so use the inputs below as N64-version instructions.
Deku Link: fly briefly, attack with bubbles, and hop over water
Fly from a Deku Flower
Stand on a Deku Flower, hold A, then release A to launch into the air. While airborne, press B to drop Deku Nuts. The flight is brief, not sustained.
Attack
Spin to attack nearby enemies. To shoot a bubble, press B; hold B and release it to shoot a larger bubble. Bubble attacks use magic.

Cross water—and know when to stop
Deku Link can hop across water up to five times. A sixth attempt makes him sink and return to the point where he started. Fire and falls from great heights are also dangerous to this form.
Goron Link: roll, punch, and pound the ground
Start a roll
Hold A and tilt the Control Stick to curl up and begin rolling. After rolling a short distance without hitting an obstacle, spikes emerge. The spiked roll can then continue without forward input, but it consumes magic. Obstacles can interrupt the setup, so the initial roll and the magic-powered spiked continuation are distinct.

Punch and pound
Press B with good timing to punch up to three times in a row. While curled, hold A and press B to pound the ground, damaging nearby enemies.
Terrain limits
Goron Link’s armored body can roll into enemies, but his weight prevents him from traveling through deep water. The manual also warns that he cannot handle falls from great heights.

Zora Link: swim, dive, attack with fins, and use a barrier
Swim and dive
Underwater, press A to swim swiftly and steer with the Control Stick. At the surface, press B to dive. Once on the sea floor, Zora Link can move as if on land.
Use punches and fin attacks
Press B with good timing for up to three punches in a row. To fire a fin from each arm, hold and release B. Z-targeting can help the fins home in on an enemy; Zora Link cannot perform other attacks while the fins are flying.

Create an electric barrier
While swimming, press R, or hold R and B, to surround Zora Link with an electric current. The barrier consumes magic. This form is vulnerable to both fire and ice.

The instructions above describe the Nintendo 64 manual. In Majora’s Mask 3D, players use assigned buttons or tap the relevant touch-screen item slot to use items and put on masks, according to Nintendo’s Nintendo 3DS game page and electronic manual. The remake supports motion controls for looking around; on New Nintendo 3DS systems, the C Stick controls the camera. The manual also notes Circle Pad Pro right Circle Pad support for looking around.

Nintendo describes the same three transformations in the remake: Deku, Goron, and Zora, associated with flying, rolling, and swimming. However, the available 3DS documentation here does not establish form-by-form button inputs, so use the on-screen and assigned controls in your edition rather than transferring N64 mappings by assumption.
