What happens when the first three days end?
In the Nintendo 64 version, the game gives Link 72 in-game hours to act. Time generally continues outside conversations and paused screens. If the cycle reaches its end, playing the Song of Time returns Link to 6:00 a.m. on the first day. Nintendo’s manual says, “When you play the SONG OF TIME, your game progress will be saved,” and, “You will always be returned to 6:00 a.m. of the first day.” The manual does not give a precise real-world duration for those 72 hours. The cycle is a core game mechanic, not a one-time countdown you must beat perfectly. Character schedules and events recur, so an early reset is a normal way to learn what happens when and try again. Nintendo’s Nintendo 64 game page
What should you prioritize on the first cycle?
Follow the opening story
Concentrate on the required opening sequence that leads to recovering the Ocarina and restoring Link. That gives you the tools and context for continuing the adventure. Let optional errands wait
You can explore and talk to people, but do not treat every missed conversation, side activity, or schedule as a permanent failure. Resetting clears some events, and characters will not remember meeting Link in the Nintendo 64 version. You can revisit recurring situations on a later cycle with more information.
Learn the rhythm rather than racing blindly
Pay attention to when people and events appear, but do not feel obliged to map every schedule immediately. The opening cycle is useful for understanding that time advances and that the Song of Time gives you another attempt. What carries over after the Song of Time?
The Nintendo 64 manual distinguishes lasting progress from things tied to the current cycle. Use this list for the Nintendo 64 original only; it is not a guarantee for the 3DS remake.

This division means a reset can preserve important tools and records while undoing much of the work performed within a particular cycle. How should you save before stopping?
On Nintendo 64, playing the Song of Time both saves progress and returns Link to the first morning. The manual also describes an interrupt-save feature for stopping temporarily, but that save is not a replacement for a lasting Song of Time save: after resuming, save again with the Song of Time or an Owl Statue before shutting down, or the game returns to the last Song of Time save. The 3DS remake has separate instructions, so do not apply the Nintendo 64 carryover table to it. Nintendo’s 3DS manual says time stops during conversations and while using subscreens; returning to the first day loses rupees and some collected items and resets dungeons and events. A simple first-cycle plan
- Follow the opening story and work toward recovering the Ocarina and restoring Link.
- Explore Clock Town as time allows, but regard optional conversations and activities as things you can revisit.
- Before a Nintendo 64 reset, deposit any wallet rupees you want to retain.
- Play the Song of Time when you are ready to return to the first morning and continue with preserved progress.
- If you stop playing after using an interrupt save, make a lasting save with the Song of Time or an Owl Statue after resuming.
