Choose by checking your exact phone model, the charger’s certified standard and power tier, and the wall adapter it requires. A familiar label alone does not guarantee a particular charging speed.
What do Qi, Qi2 and MagSafe mean?
Qi: the original cross-brand standard
Qi is the Wireless Power Consortium’s (WPC) wireless-charging standard, first released in 2010. It covers multiple specification versions and power profiles, so the word “Qi” alone does not identify one universal charging rate. Apple says iPhone 8 and later can use Qi-certified wireless chargers. WPC: Qi standards · Apple: How to wirelessly charge your iPhone
Qi2: magnetic alignment in a WPC standard
Introduced in 2023, Qi2’s Magnetic Power Profile (MPP) uses magnets to align the charger and phone. Original Qi2 supports up to 15W under the standard. A charger labeled only “Qi” does not establish that it has Qi2’s magnetic attachment or Qi2’s power capability. WPC: Qi standards
Qi2 25W: a higher power tier
The WPC brands Qi v2.2.1 as Qi2 25W. It announced the branding on 23 July 2025; its specification history says Qi v2.2 supports power transfer up to 25W. That is a standard/profile capability, not a promise that every Qi2 25W charger will deliver 25W to every phone. The WPC says the tier offers nearly 70% more power than original Qi2 and presents charging from 0 to 50% in about 30 minutes as a capability claim; neither figure guarantees that outcome for a particular phone-and-charger combination. MagSafe: Apple’s system, which can also be Qi-certified
MagSafe is Apple’s brand for its magnetic charging and accessory system. It is not mutually exclusive with Qi certification: the WPC database lists Apple MagSafe Charger A3502 as Qi v2.2.1 certified with the MPP25 profile. The label “MagSafe” identifies Apple’s system; check the exact charger and phone specifications for the supported charging rate. WPC certified-products record: Apple MagSafe Charger A3502

| Buying factor | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Phone compatibility | Exact manufacturer and model; supported Qi, Qi2 or MagSafe behavior | The phone’s support determines which features and peak charging tier it can use. |
| Charger certification | The exact brand and model in the WPC certified-products database | A logo or broad “compatible” claim alone does not establish certification. |
| Power tier | Qi, Qi2/MPP or Qi2 25W, alongside the phone’s own limit | The standard’s capability cannot override the receiver’s limit. |
| Wall adapter | The required USB-C adapter rating and output profile | An undersized or unsuitable adapter may prevent the supported peak rate. |
| Attachment and layout | Magnetic alignment, stand or flat pad, and one- or multi-device use | These affect placement and convenience; attachment by itself does not guarantee speed. |
| Version compatibility | Phone and charger documentation, especially for older Qi 1.x equipment | Qi v2.0 devices are not required to be fully backward compatible with Qi 1.x certified products. |
Will a Qi charger work with an iPhone?
Apple says iPhone 8 and later can charge wirelessly with Qi-certified accessories. Many Qi chargers charge iPhone at up to 7.5W, but actual support depends on the phone and charger. Apple recommends MagSafe or Qi2-certified chargers when seeking faster wireless charging. Apple: How to wirelessly charge your iPhone · Apple: About MagSafe chargers
Qi2’s magnetic alignment is useful if you want the phone to attach and line up with the charger. If you only need a basic wireless pad, a Qi charger may be adequate; do not assume, however, that a Qi-only label indicates magnetic alignment or a newer Qi2 power tier.

What charger do you need for 25W wireless charging?
For an iPhone, Apple’s March 2026 guidance lists up to 25W MagSafe charging for selected models when used with specified MagSafe charger models and a suitable adapter. Apple requires a 30W-or-greater adapter with a 15V/2.0A or higher output for that stated rate. The precise supported iPhone models and charger part numbers are in Apple’s guidance; results vary with the model, adapter and system conditions. Apple: About MagSafe chargers
For other phones, verify the exact manufacturer’s specifications rather than inferring support from a Qi2 25W charger’s label. The receiver must support the relevant tier, and the charger and adapter must meet the requirements for the combination.

How to verify a charger’s certification
- Find the charger’s exact brand and model number on its packaging or product listing.
- Search for that exact product in the WPC certified-products database.
- Match the database record to the product, and check its certification and profile rather than relying on a logo or a general compatibility statement.
- Check the phone maker’s documentation for supported standards, maximum rate and any required adapter.
The WPC says certified products undergo independent testing, but certification is not an endorsement and does not guarantee product safety. WPC: Testing and certification
How to read Qi version labels
Qi names and power profiles have changed over time. The WPC’s specification history lists Qi 2.3, dated December 2025, as a later version, while its current standards overview uses Qi2 25W for Qi v2.2.1. Do not assume every Qi version has the same profile or charging rate; verify the exact version and product certification. The WPC also says Qi v2.0 devices are not required to be 100% backward compatible with Qi 1.x certified products, so check both devices’ documentation if you are pairing older equipment.
