Secret Lair is a Magic: The Gathering product line; Universes Beyond is the broader brand for Magic products based on worlds outside Magic. Some Secret Lair drops are Universes Beyond releases, but Universes Beyond also includes products such as Commander decks and booster sets. The labels describe different things, so they are not interchangeable.
What do Secret Lair and Universes Beyond mean?
Secret Lair is a product line
Secret Lair identifies a particular Magic product line and release format. A Secret Lair drop may contain a small number of cards, often with a distinctive presentation.
Universes Beyond is a broader brand
Universes Beyond identifies Magic products that draw on fictional worlds beyond Magic’s own. Wizards of the Coast described it in 2021 as a brand alongside existing Magic products, and said its releases would generally be sold through regular Magic channels rather than being limited to Secret Lair. The distinction is about the product category, not whether the cards count as Magic: Wizards said Universes Beyond cards are Magic cards. Wizards’ 2021 introduction to Universes Beyond
How can the two labels overlap?
A Secret Lair drop can be one kind of Universes Beyond release, but the wider brand can take other forms. Wizards’ design article lists Secret Lair drops, alternate treatments with the same card text, cards mixed into a premier set, Commander decks, and small or large sets as possible forms of Universes Beyond products. - Includes a mix of AT LEAST 25 Rares/Uncommons which is half of the cards.
- Absolutely NO... Basic lands, Foreign, or silver/gold bordered cards.
- Some may contain Foils or Mythics but not all.
- Sets can range from Beta to the current Magic the Gathering set.
- Mint/Excellent condition only.
The Warhammer 40,000 collaboration illustrates the overlap: Wizards announced four Commander decks and three Secret Lair drops as parts of that collaboration. The collaboration was broader than its Secret Lair releases. Wizards’ Warhammer 40,000 announcement
Are Universes Beyond cards only sold as Secret Lair drops?
No. Secret Lair is one possible release format, not the only way Universes Beyond products are released. The brand has also covered Commander decks and full sets. Wizards’ 2021 statement that Universes Beyond products would generally use the same sales channels as other Magic products explains the original distinction; it does not establish current stock or the sales channel for every later release. How do availability and reprints differ by release?
Availability depends on the product and its release terms. For example, a 2021 Wizards update said it planned to create in-Magic versions of mechanically unique cards from the forthcoming Secret Lair Universes Beyond release, with approximate timing and availability through The List. Wizards explicitly scoped that plan to Universes Beyond products sold through Secret Lair and noted that plans could change. It should not be treated as a standing promise for every Secret Lair or Universes Beyond release. Wizards’ 2021 Secret Lair Universes Beyond update
Are Universes Beyond cards legal in every Magic format?
Legality depends on the particular release and card. In October 2024, Wizards announced that new Universes Beyond booster sets released from 2025 onward would be designed for legality in all major Constructed formats. The change was forward-looking; it did not alter the legality of existing sets, and the announcement distinguished main booster sets from cards or products outside them. Do not assume that every product carrying the Universes Beyond label has identical legality. Check the relevant card and format rules. How does Wizards approach Universes Beyond design?
Design intent is not a guarantee that every fan will like a crossover, but Wizards has described its aim as capturing the source property’s identity. In a February 2026 article about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set, designer Mark Rosewater wrote: “A good Universes Beyond design captures the essence of the property.” He also said design teams work with subject-matter experts and the licensor. How to compare two specific products
When deciding what two products have in common—or whether either suits your needs—compare the release itself rather than relying on the labels alone:
Quick Recap
- Label: Is the name describing the Universes Beyond brand or a specific Secret Lair product?
- Product form: Is it a Secret Lair drop, Commander deck, or booster set?
- Availability: What sales channel and release window does the official product page specify?
- Format legality: What rules apply to that particular set, deck, or card?
- Card treatment and reprints: Is a card mechanically unique, and has Wizards made a release-specific announcement about another version?
