For an older Mac, the better choice is the mouse whose exact model supports the Mac’s installed macOS version. Apple specifies OS X 10.11 or later for its 2015 Magic Mouse, but macOS 15.1 or later for the USB-C Magic Mouse. A third-party Bluetooth mouse can also work, but compatibility depends on its model. The available product and support information does not establish a universal winner for comfort or performance.
Will a Magic Mouse work with your older Mac?
Check the Magic Mouse generation and the Mac’s installed operating system before buying. Bluetooth support alone is not enough to establish compatibility: Apple lists different minimum macOS versions for different Magic Mouse generations.

These requirements apply to the specified generations, not automatically to every Magic Mouse. If you are considering a used or older listing, confirm its exact model and connector rather than relying on the generic product name.
How does a third-party mouse compare?
“Third-party mouse” covers many different products, so there is no single compatibility rule. A Bluetooth model can be a straightforward option: Logitech’s support instructions for its M558, for example, describe connecting it through the Mac’s Bluetooth settings. That example does not establish that every Logitech mouse—or every mouse from another maker—works with every older Mac.

Choose based on the features you will actually use. If Multi-Touch scrolling and swiping are important, Apple specifies those capabilities for Magic Mouse. If you want a particular button layout or remapping option, check whether that mouse provides the control and whether it requires software compatible with your macOS version.
Do you need Logitech software to use a Logitech mouse?
Do not assume that a vendor utility’s macOS requirements are the same as the mouse’s basic connection requirements. Logitech says its software typically supports the two latest macOS versions and notes that not all listed software works fully through Rosetta. That is a reason to verify software-dependent features—such as button customization—on your system; it is not evidence that a mouse cannot move the pointer without the utility.

For any third-party model, check its product-specific requirements and support page. Confirm separately whether the mouse can connect and whether the settings or extra controls you want are supported.
How to check compatibility before buying
- Find your Mac’s macOS version. On the Mac, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. Record the version shown.
- Identify the exact mouse generation or model. Check the product listing or manufacturer specifications for the model name and connector. For Magic Mouse, distinguish the 2015 Lightning generation from the USB-C generation.
- Compare the stated operating-system requirement. Make sure the mouse’s minimum requirement is met by the version installed on your Mac. Do not infer compatibility from Bluetooth alone.
- Check connection and port needs. Confirm that Bluetooth is available if the mouse uses it. For a receiver or charging cable, check that you have a compatible port or the necessary adapter.
- Verify software-dependent features separately. If you need remapping, gestures, or other customization, check the vendor utility’s supported macOS versions and whether those functions require the utility.
How to pair a mouse if you cannot reach Bluetooth settings
Apple’s setup guidance says supported Magic Mouse devices can connect wirelessly over Bluetooth when turned on and paired. For supported models, connecting by cable can charge and pair the mouse; unplug it for wireless use. Connector and setup details depend on the generation.

If you cannot use the mouse to open Bluetooth settings, Apple recommends using a Mac laptop’s built-in trackpad or a USB mouse. Once you can navigate the Mac, open Bluetooth settings and follow the pairing instructions for the specific mouse. A third-party mouse may have its own pairing mode or sequence, so follow that model’s instructions.

Which one should you choose?
- Choose a Magic Mouse when the exact generation meets your Mac’s OS requirement and you want Apple’s specified Multi-Touch scrolling and swiping.
- Consider a third-party Bluetooth mouse when its model-specific requirements fit your Mac and its controls or connection suit your needs.
- Pause before buying when the listing does not identify the generation, the operating-system requirement is unclear, or a feature you need depends on unsupported software.
- For comfort or performance, compare the specific options in person or choose a seller with a suitable return policy; the available documentation does not support declaring one type universally better.
