Compatibility depends on the model. Apple lists macOS 15.1 or later for its current USB-C Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad. An older Magic Mouse specification lists a Bluetooth-enabled Mac running OS X 10.11 or later. Check the exact device generation rather than applying one minimum version to every Magic Mouse or Trackpad.
Which macOS versions do Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad require?
Apple’s requirements differ by generation. The two current USB-C models have the same listed minimum, while Apple’s specification for an older Magic Mouse gives a different requirement.
| Model | Apple’s listed Mac system requirement | Connection and input features |
|---|---|---|
| Magic Mouse (USB-C, introduced in 2024) | macOS 15.1 or later | Bluetooth wireless connection; Multi-Touch surface for swiping and scrolling; USB-C port |
| Magic Trackpad (USB-C) | macOS 15.1 or later | Bluetooth wireless connection; Multi-Touch and Force Touch; edge-to-edge glass surface; USB-C port |
| Older Magic Mouse specification (2015 model) | Bluetooth-enabled Mac with OS X 10.11 or later | Bluetooth; check the specific device’s port and specification |

How to check whether your Magic Mouse or Trackpad is compatible
- Identify the device generation. Use the model information and physical design to find the exact product specification on Apple’s support site. Do not infer its minimum macOS version from the name alone.
- Check the connector. Current models in the cited specifications have USB-C ports. Older devices may use a different connector, so inspect the port before selecting a cable.
- Compare the Mac’s operating system with that model’s requirement. For the current USB-C Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad, Apple lists macOS 15.1 or later. The older 2015 Magic Mouse specification lists OS X 10.11 or later for a Bluetooth-enabled Mac.
- Separate basic pairing from feature support. Apple’s specifications describe supported input features, but the cited materials do not map every gesture or feature to every earlier macOS release. Bluetooth support alone does not establish that every feature will work on every older system.
How to pair a Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad
Apple says these devices work wirelessly over Bluetooth when turned on and paired with the Mac. A device included with a new Mac should already be paired; turn it on to connect. For a separately purchased device or one being set up again, Apple’s guidance is to connect a supported cable, turn on the device, and check Bluetooth settings to confirm pairing. The cable must match the port on the device.

- The rechargeable battery will power it for about a month or more between charges.
If you cannot connect the device by cable, use a mouse or trackpad that is already connected to the Mac to complete setup. On a Mac laptop, its built-in trackpad is another option. Apple’s setup guidance covers USB-C, USB-C-to-Lightning, and Lightning cables for supported devices; verify which connector your particular model has before buying or using a cable. See Apple’s setup instructions for Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad.
Can you use a Magic Mouse or Trackpad while it is connected by cable?
Apple’s Mac User Guide distinguishes the two devices: disconnect Magic Mouse from the Mac before using it, while Magic Trackpad can be used while connected. This is separate from their Bluetooth pairing and model-specific macOS requirements. Consult Apple’s charging guidance and check the connector on older hardware before choosing a cable.

Which current model should you choose?
Both current USB-C models list macOS 15.1 or later and use Bluetooth. The practical difference is the input surface and the features Apple describes, not a different listed minimum operating system.
- Magic Mouse: a mouse with a Multi-Touch surface for simple swipes and scrolling.
- Magic Trackpad: a larger, edge-to-edge glass surface with Multi-Touch gestures and Force Touch.
Apple’s specifications describe those features but do not establish that one device is more comfortable or better for every person. Choose based on whether you prefer a mouse or a trackpad and the input features you want.

Why won’t my Magic Mouse or Trackpad connect?
Start by checking the model and its requirements instead of assuming that every Magic device has the same macOS floor. Then verify that it is turned on and paired in Bluetooth settings. If setup requires a cable, confirm that the cable matches the device’s port; if you cannot use a cable, complete setup with another connected pointing device or a laptop’s built-in trackpad.
