Magic Leap and Google showed an Android XR smart-glasses prototype at the Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh on October 29, 2025. It is a reference design—not a retail product announcement—and the companies gave no price, sales date, or consumer model name.
What did Magic Leap and Google unveil?
The companies presented a prototype intended to show how their technologies might contribute to glasses for Google’s Android XR ecosystem. Magic Leap described it as a prototype and reference design, not a finished product. The announcement also said the companies extended their collaboration under a three-year agreement. Magic Leap’s October 29, 2025 announcement places the unveiling at FII in Riyadh.
The partnership began earlier: Magic Leap announced a strategic technology partnership with Google in May 2024, bringing together Magic Leap’s augmented-reality expertise and optics with Google’s technology platforms. The 2025 announcement added a glasses concept and the three-year extension. The May 2024 partnership announcement describes the earlier agreement.
What technology is in the concept?
The companies describe the concept as combining Magic Leap’s waveguides and optics with Google’s Raxium microLED light engine. Magic Leap also cites device services and hardware integration as part of its contribution. They say the work is intended to balance visual quality, comfort, and manufacturability.

Those are stated development goals, not independently measured results. The announcement gives no resolution, field of view, brightness, weight, battery-life figure, or other performance measurements, so there is not enough information to rank the prototype against other glasses.
Can you buy these Android XR glasses?
No purchase information was announced for this prototype. The October 2025 release does not name a retail model or give a price or launch date. It should not be confused with Magic Leap 2, generic smart-glasses listings, or another Android XR product: the announcement does not establish those as substitutes or compatible products.

How this prototype relates to Google’s other Android XR eyewear plans
Android XR is Google’s broader platform for headsets and glasses, not the name of this particular prototype. Google’s May 2025 glasses concepts described camera, microphone, speaker, and phone-pairing capabilities, with an optional in-lens display. Google also demonstrated ideas such as messages, appointments, directions, photos, and live translation, with Gemini using what the wearer sees and hears to offer contextual assistance. These are platform concepts, not confirmed specifications for the Magic Leap design. Google named Gentle Monster and Warby Parker as eyewear partners and said Kering Eyewear could be a future partner.
At Google I/O 2026, Google described two categories of intelligent eyewear: audio glasses for spoken assistance and display glasses that can show information. Its announcement previewed designs associated with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker and said audio glasses were coming later in fall. It did not identify those designs as the Magic Leap prototype. Google’s I/O 2026 announcement is about broader platform and partner plans, not evidence that this specific prototype is available.

Google’s Android XR overview says the eyewear concepts are in development and may change. A platform concept or partner announcement therefore should not be read as confirmation that the Magic Leap reference design will ship unchanged.
What Magic Leap says its role will be
In a July 9, 2026 update, Magic Leap described a partner-first strategy: moving away from building first-party devices and toward supplying waveguide technology and device-integration expertise to companies developing AI display glasses. That is Magic Leap’s stated direction, not a product-launch announcement for this prototype. The company’s strategy update also attributes a 44.4% rise in total XR-device shipments in 2025 to IDC. Magic Leap interprets that rise as a sign that consumers will adopt AI wearables if they are useful, stylish, and affordable; the shipment figure alone does not establish that conclusion.

What the companies said
In the October 2025 announcement, Google XR vice president and general manager Shahram Izadi said, “Magic Leap’s optics, display systems, and hardware expertise have been essential to advancing our Android XR glasses concepts to life.” Magic Leap CEO Ross Rosenberg said, “We’re drawing on years of innovation to help our partners advance AR technology and create glasses that are practical and powerful for everyday use by millions of people.” Both comments appeared in a company release and express the companies’ view of the collaboration; neither is an independent assessment of prototype performance.
