Apple’s 2026 announcements identify four Mac families: the M5 MacBook Air, M5 Pro or M5 Max MacBook Pro, M6 or M5 Pro Mac mini, and M5 Max or M5 Ultra Mac Studio. That is the lineup established by the cited announcements—not a verified list of every model still available in every country. The sources also do not establish a complete four-generation history of Macs using M2, M3, M4 and M5 chips.
Which Macs do Apple’s 2026 announcements establish?
Apple’s March and September 2026 announcements name these configurations. Sizes and starting storage below are included where the announcements specify them; availability and exact options can vary by country and storefront.
| Mac family | Announced chip options | Other stated details |
|---|---|---|
| MacBook Air | M5 | 13-inch and 15-inch sizes; 512GB starting storage |
| MacBook Pro | M5 Pro or M5 Max | 14-inch and 16-inch sizes; starting storage is 1TB with M5 Pro and 2TB with M5 Max |
| Mac mini | M6 or M5 Pro | Compact desktop configurations |
| Mac Studio | M5 Max or M5 Ultra | Professional desktop configurations |
These model and configuration details come from Apple Newsroom announcements dated March 11 and September 22, 2026. Apple’s Mac comparison page includes dynamically rendered content and older model references, so it does not independently establish a complete worldwide storefront inventory. Check the Apple Store for your country for the models actually offered there.

How should you choose between the Mac families?
MacBook Air: portability and everyday work
The M5 Air is the portable option in this set, with a choice of 13-inch or 15-inch display size. The announcement establishes those sizes and the 512GB starting-storage configuration, but does not provide a starting price here. Consider how much screen space you want to carry and whether the available memory, storage and connectivity options suit your work.

- AN AMAZING MAC AT A SURPRISING PRICE — With an incredibly portable and durable aluminum design, up to 16 hours of battery life,* and the A18 Pro chip, MacBook Neo is ready to go wherever school takes you.
- FOUR STUNNING COLORS. ONE DURABLE DESIGN — Choose from four beautiful colors — Silver, Blush, Citrus, or Indigo — each with a color-coordinated keyboard. And MacBook Neo is made with a durable recycled aluminum enclosure that helps it reach 60 percent recycled content by weight — the most ever in any Apple product.*
- FLY THROUGH EVERYDAY ASSIGNMENTS — Whether you’re cramming for finals, using Apple Intelligence* to summarize class notes, creating presentations, or even playing the latest Apple Arcade game,* MacBook Neo delivers the performance and AI capabilities you need to get things done.
- UP TO 16 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — MacBook Neo delivers all day battery life, so you can power through from early morning classes to late night study sessions without worrying about plugging in.
- A VIBRANT 13-INCH DISPLAY* — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display on MacBook Neo supports 1 billion colors, so photos and videos pop and text is crisp for easy reading.
MacBook Pro: a more capable laptop tier
The 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro configurations pair M5 Pro or M5 Max with higher stated starting storage than the Air. Apple specifies up to 18 CPU cores and 20 GPU cores for M5 Pro, and an 18-core CPU and up to 40-core GPU for M5 Max. The choice is less about the chip name alone than whether your regular workload benefits from the higher GPU ceiling, memory capacity, bandwidth or storage configuration. Screen size, portability and budget still matter.
Mac mini: a compact desktop
The Mac mini offers M6 for general desktop use and M5 Pro for workloads that need a higher professional tier. It is a desktop rather than an all-in-one computer, so factor in the display and peripherals you need. Apple says the new models became available September 22, 2026.

Mac Studio: a desktop for heavier workloads
The Mac Studio pairs M5 Max or M5 Ultra with substantially higher published memory and compute ceilings. Apple positions these configurations for demanding creative, technical and AI work. The relevant question is whether your applications and projects can make use of the extra capacity—not whether the Ultra label is inherently better for every buyer.
What are the differences among M6, M5 Pro, M5 Max and M5 Ultra?
Apple’s published specifications show how these chips differ. “Up to” figures are maximum configurations, not a guarantee that every Mac with that chip has those specifications.

| Chip | Apple-stated CPU and GPU ceilings | Unified memory ceiling | Memory bandwidth |
|---|---|---|---|
| M6 | 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU | Not stated in the cited announcement | Up to 170 GB/s |
| M5 Pro | Up to 18-core CPU, up to 20-core GPU | Up to 64GB | Up to 307GB/s |
| M5 Max | 18-core CPU, up to 40-core GPU | Up to 128GB | Up to 614GB/s |
| M5 Ultra | Up to 36-core CPU, up to 80-core GPU | Up to 512GB | 1.2 TB/s |
Apple describes M6 as its first 2-nanometer chip and lists a dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple says M5 Pro and M5 Max use Fusion Architecture, which connects two dies into one system on a chip. It describes M5 Ultra as using a quad-die architecture. These are Apple’s architecture descriptions, not independent assessments of real-world performance.
What do Apple’s performance claims actually show?
Apple’s speed multipliers are vendor comparisons against named prior-generation systems, not neutral tests across every Mac or workload. Treat them as claims about the stated comparison conditions rather than as a promise that a given app will run that much faster for you.

- For M6 Mac mini, Apple claims up to 4× faster AI performance and 40% faster CPU performance than its compared prior-generation M4 Mac mini. Apple’s footnote identifies the comparison system as an M4 with a 10-core CPU and GPU, 32GB unified memory and a 2TB SSD.
- For Mac Studio, Apple claims up to 4.3× faster AI performance and up to 1.8× faster graphics against a prior M3 Ultra Mac Studio configuration.
- For M5 Pro and M5 Max, Apple says Neural Accelerators are present in each GPU core and claims more than 4× the previous generation’s peak GPU compute for AI. It also claims up to 35% higher ray-tracing graphics performance for M5 Pro versus M4 Pro and up to 30% for M5 Max versus M4 Max.
Those figures do not establish the performance of every configuration or application. For a purchase decision, match the specific chip and memory configuration to the software and workload you expect to run.

Does this cover the four chip generations in the title?
No complete M2-through-M5 timeline is established by these announcements. They provide useful M5 and M6 details, and mention prior M4 and M3 systems in specific performance comparisons, but they do not establish which M2, M3, M4 or M5 Macs Apple currently sells across regions—or provide a full historical comparison of those generations. The lineup above should therefore be read as the configurations identified in Apple’s 2026 announcements, not as proof of a four-generation catalog.
