Neither provides a guaranteed list of every device connected to Wi-Fi. Use the method that matches what you need: a neighbor entry, an advertised service, or details about the Mac’s own connection.

How to see devices on your network on a Mac
1. Confirm which network the Mac is using
First check the Mac’s connection so you know which local network its results refer to. Option-click the Wi-Fi status menu in the menu bar to view the Mac’s IP address and router address, along with other Wi-Fi details. Apple also documents System Information as a place to see active network services, IP addresses, and connection type and speed. Apple’s Wi-Fi details guide and System Information guide describe these views.
2. Check the neighbor entries with arp -a
- Open Terminal.
- Enter
arp -aand press Return. - Review the address-resolution entries printed for neighbors the Mac currently knows about.
The command is a quick view, not a network-wide census. A device missing from the output may still be connected; its absence only means it is not represented in the entries the Mac currently knows. The cited manual documents the macOS 13.6.5 version of arp; use man arp on your installed macOS version to check its local documentation and available options.
3. Browse Bonjour/DNS-SD services when you need a service or name
Bonjour-compatible devices can advertise services that other devices on the local network can discover. DNS-SD is the service-discovery mechanism used to browse those announcements. This can help when you are looking for a particular kind of service rather than trying to count every connected device. Apple notes that a Mac’s local hostname identifies it to Bonjour-compatible services. Apple: change your Mac’s name.

Service browsing will not necessarily reveal devices that do not advertise a service or do not respond. DNS-SD command syntax can vary by platform; the available manual is for NetBSD, so check man dns-sd on your Mac before relying on specific flags. DNS-SD manual.
What networksetup tells you
To list the Mac’s configured network services, run networksetup -listallnetworkservices in Terminal. It reports services associated with the Mac’s hardware ports; an asterisk marks a disabled service. This can help identify the Mac’s network setup, but it does not enumerate peer devices. When local-network permission matters
If you use an app to discover or communicate with devices on your local network, review its permission under System Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network. Apple documents this control for apps. That guidance does not establish that every shell command is governed identically, so do not treat an app permission setting as an explanation for all Terminal output. Apple: control access to your local network.

The methods above expose information the Mac knows or services devices choose to advertise; the cited Apple documentation does not establish a Terminal procedure that guarantees an exhaustive inventory. If you need an authoritative list of connected clients, consult the router’s client list or an administrator-managed inventory rather than treating an empty or partial arp -a result as proof that devices are absent.
