A MacBook trackpad and a touchscreen may both respond to swipes and pinches, but they do not work the same way. A trackpad is an indirect pointing surface: your fingers move below the display, and macOS interprets that movement as pointer input, scrolling, zooming, or a system command. Touchscreen gestures act directly on the display, and their effect depends on where you touch and how you move.
How the two surfaces interpret your fingers
MacBook trackpad: indirect input
On a MacBook, your fingers move across a separate surface while the pointer or content is on the screen. A gesture might control the pointer, scroll a page, zoom an item, or trigger a macOS feature such as Mission Control. Apple’s Mac Multi-Touch gesture guide describes examples including two-finger scrolling, pinch-to-zoom, page navigation, and gestures for managing windows and full-screen apps.
Touchscreen: direct input
On an iPad touchscreen, your finger contacts the content or a screen navigation area. A swipe can act on what is under your finger, or it can navigate the system based on where the swipe starts. Apple documents, for example, swiping up from the bottom edge to go Home and swiping up and pausing to open Exposé in its iPad gesture guide.
Common tasks, different gesture contexts
| Task | MacBook trackpad example | Direct iPad touchscreen example |
|---|---|---|
| Scroll | Slide two fingers up or down to scroll. | Move a finger across the screen to scroll content; the effect depends on the app and content. |
| Zoom | Pinch with two fingers to zoom; double-tap with two fingers for Smart Zoom. | Pinch to zoom content where the app supports it; the exact result depends on the app or item. |
| Select or open | Click the trackpad, or tap to click if that option is enabled. | Tap the target on the display. |
| Navigate the system | Multi-finger gestures can show Mission Control or App Exposé, or switch between full-screen apps. | Swipe from the bottom edge to go Home or open Exposé; swipe left or right along the bottom edge to switch open apps. |
| Open a context menu | A two-finger click or tap can perform a secondary click. | Touch navigation gestures are not a direct equivalent of a Mac secondary click; use the control or interaction provided by the app. |
These are examples, not a conversion chart. A pinch or swipe may be recognized on both surfaces yet have a different purpose because the device, operating system, app, gesture starting point, and settings all matter.

What Mac trackpad gestures can do
Apple’s Mac gesture reference includes two-finger secondary click, scrolling, pinch-to-zoom, rotating items, and swiping between pages. Other gestures can drag items, look up information or data detectors, show the desktop, open Mission Control or App Exposé, and switch between full-screen apps. The available gestures and controls can vary by Mac and trackpad.
Adjusting gestures on a Mac
To see the options on your Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Trackpad. Depending on your Mac or trackpad, settings can include tracking speed, clicking, tap to click, secondary click, scroll and zoom, and system gestures. Some gestures can be changed or turned off. Apple describes these options in Change Trackpad settings on Mac.

Pressure features are specific to supported trackpads
Some Mac trackpads support Force Touch. A Force click uses a deeper press, can provide haptic feedback, and may produce different results depending on the selected item or app. It is a pressure-based trackpad interaction, not a touchscreen swipe or tap. See Apple’s Multi-Touch gestures reference for the applicable Mac feature details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not confuse an iPad touchscreen with an iPad trackpad
An iPad can also be used with a Magic Trackpad or a supported keyboard trackpad. Those are separate, indirect input surfaces, so they have trackpad gestures of their own; Apple lists actions such as opening the Dock, going Home, and opening Slide Over in its iPad trackpad gesture guide. They should not be treated as touchscreen gestures simply because they control the same iPad.
