Neither the MacBook Air nor Windows laptops are the better value for everyone. The current MacBook Air is a specific M5 model in 13- and 15-inch sizes; “Windows laptop” covers machines with widely different prices, specifications, and designs. Compare named models at the prices you can actually buy them for, with your software needs and configuration matched.
What you’re comparing
Apple’s current MacBook Air lineup uses the M5 chip and comes in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes. Apple lists configurations with 16GB to 32GB of unified memory and 512GB to 4TB of storage. Its product page claims up to 18 hours of battery life; that is a manufacturer figure, not an independent comparison with a Windows laptop. See Apple’s MacBook Air product page.
A Windows laptop is not one product or specification tier. A Surface Laptop, a gaming notebook, and an entry-level everyday laptop can differ substantially. A comparison with one Windows model cannot establish which platform offers better value overall.
Start with the operating system and your essential software
Choose Windows when your work depends on it
If a required work or school application, device, or workflow needs Windows, make that your starting point. Confirm compatibility with the exact laptop you plan to buy; the Windows label alone does not guarantee that every application or peripheral will work as you expect.

Choose MacBook Air when macOS and Apple integration matter
If you need macOS or already use Apple devices, the Air may offer practical value beyond its component list. Apple describes Continuity features for tasks such as sharing files, handing work between devices, and integrating with iPhone. Compare the actual price and configuration
Apple announced U.S. launch prices of $1,099 for the 13-inch M5 MacBook Air and $1,299 for the 15-inch model on March 3, 2026. Its announced U.S. education prices were $999 and $1,199, respectively. These are launch prices, not a live quote: check current prices in your country and distinguish sale prices, education pricing, refurbished listings, and trade-in credit. Compare the configuration you would actually buy, not just the starting price. Match memory and storage as closely as possible, then consider screen size, display, weight, ports, warranty, and any adapters or accessories you need. Apple’s listed M5 Air storage starts at 512GB and goes up to 4TB; a Windows configuration with more storage should not be treated as an equivalent to a lower-storage Air without noting the difference.

Account for ports and external displays
Apple’s M5 MacBook Air announcement lists two Thunderbolt 4 ports and support for up to two external displays. Check your monitor and peripheral connections before deciding whether you would need a hub or other adapter, and include that cost if so. Apple’s March 2026 announcement.
Assess battery life and performance on comparable evidence
Apple claims up to 18 hours of battery life for the MacBook Air. “Up to” is a manufacturer claim, and battery results depend on workload and test conditions. Do not compare it directly with a rival’s maximum unless the figures come from comparable tests. Apple also publishes selected comparisons with an Intel Core Ultra X7 PC laptop; those comparisons are Apple’s claims, not independent head-to-head results. Apple’s MacBook Air product page.

For performance per dollar, look for independent tests of the exact configurations you are considering, using workloads that resemble yours. The available figures do not establish an overall real-world winner between the M5 Air and Windows laptops as a category.

Some Windows laptops qualify as Copilot+ PCs, a hardware-specific designation rather than a feature of every Windows machine. Microsoft says a qualifying PC needs an NPU capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS). Microsoft documents experiences including Recall, Cocreator, Live Captions, Windows Studio Effects, and automatic super resolution; availability depends on the device configuration. Make the value decision for your use
- Write down your non-negotiables. Identify required applications, peripherals, operating system, and any work or school compatibility rules.
- Pick specific models and configurations. Compare memory, storage, display size, weight, ports, warranty, and necessary accessories—not broad platform labels.
- Check local checkout prices on the same date. Keep list, promotional, education, refurbished, and trade-in prices distinct.
- Use comparable independent tests for demanding workloads. Battery and performance figures are meaningful only when the methods and configurations are comparable.
- Consider ownership friction. Include software, adapters, existing devices, and the workflow you expect to use. Do not assume longer useful life or higher resale value without comparable evidence.
The MacBook Air is the clearer fit when macOS, Apple-device integration, and its particular size and configuration suit your needs at a price you can verify. A Windows laptop is the clearer fit when your essential applications or workflow require Windows, or when a specific Windows model better matches your budget and requirements. Without a named Windows model, matched specifications, current local prices, and comparable test results, there is no evidence-based universal value winner.
