For most students and everyday users, the MacBook Air is the better starting point: it is fanless, offers a choice of 13- or 15-inch screen, and costs less at its U.S. starting price. Choose a MacBook Pro when you can point to a specific reason to pay more—such as its XDR display, Thunderbolt 5 connectivity, or a higher-tier chip for complex, sustained work.
This comparison covers Apple’s M5-generation lineup announced March 3, 2026. Prices below are U.S. launch starting prices; check Apple’s current listing for your country and the exact configuration before buying.
Which MacBook should you choose?
- Choose MacBook Air for school, office work, browsing, video calls, and general creative tasks when a quiet, portable computer and lower starting cost matter most.
- Choose MacBook Pro if your work specifically benefits from a Pro- or Max-tier chip, the XDR display, Thunderbolt 5, or the model’s additional connectivity.
- Choose by screen size within either line based on how much workspace you want versus how compact a laptop you prefer.
These are feature-based recommendations, not conclusions from an independent head-to-head benchmark. Apple positions the M5 Air for everyday productivity through creative workflows, while describing the M5 Pro and M5 Max as options for demanding professional work. See Apple’s MacBook Air announcement and MacBook Pro announcement.
What are the current MacBook Air and Pro models?
Apple’s current comparison lineup includes 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models with M5; 14-inch MacBook Pro models with M5, M5 Pro, or M5 Max; and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro or M5 Max. Will a MacBook Air handle your workload?
Everyday work, school, and general creative tasks
For documents, research, browsing, video calls, and ordinary media work, the Air is the sensible default unless you already know your workflow needs a Pro-specific feature. Apple lists the M5 Air with a 10-core CPU and up to a 10-core GPU, and describes it as suitable for productivity and creative workflows. That positioning is Apple’s, not an independent performance finding.
Complex or sustained professional work
Consider a MacBook Pro if your applications and projects make meaningful use of the M5 Pro or M5 Max tier. Apple describes M5 Pro as aimed at complex workflows and M5 Max at users pushing the limits. Rather than choosing Pro because a task sounds “professional,” identify the actual application, project size, and feature or performance tier it needs. No independent comparison establishes a universal point at which Pro becomes necessary.

What do you get from the Pro display?
The Air has a 13.6-inch or 15.3-inch Liquid Retina display rated at 500 nits. The Pro lineup offers 14-inch or 16-inch Liquid Retina XDR displays, with a nano-texture option. If XDR or that display option is important to your work, the Pro is the relevant choice; otherwise, screen size and workspace may matter more than the product label. Apple lists these display specifications in its Air and Pro announcements.
Choosing a screen size
- 13-inch Air: choose it when compactness within the Air line is the priority.
- 15-inch Air: choose it for a larger Air screen without moving to the Pro line.
- 14-inch Pro: the smaller Pro option, available with M5, M5 Pro, or M5 Max.
- 16-inch Pro: the larger Pro option, available with M5 Pro or M5 Max.
A larger display offers more workspace, but price and exact weight vary by configuration. Compare the technical specifications for the particular size and configuration you are considering; a precise Air-versus-Pro weight comparison is not stated here.

Is the MacBook Air quieter and more portable?
Apple describes the Air as thin, light, and fanless. Fanless operation means it has no cooling fan to make fan noise. That makes the Air a natural fit if silence is a priority, but it does not by itself establish how the two lines compare under every workload. For portability, compare the published dimensions and weight of the exact models rather than assuming all sizes are equivalent.

Battery life
Apple claims up to 18 hours for the M5 MacBook Air and up to 24 hours for the new MacBook Pro. These are manufacturer maximums, not promises of everyday runtime; actual battery life varies with workload and conditions. See Apple’s Air and Pro announcements for the claims.

Ports and external displays
The M5 Air has two Thunderbolt 4 ports and MagSafe charging, and supports up to two external displays. The Pro offers Thunderbolt 5 and a wider array of connectivity. If you regularly connect several devices or need Thunderbolt 5, check the port list for your chosen Pro configuration. An optional compatible hub or dock can add connections when needed; it is not a requirement for every Air owner.
How much storage should you buy?
The M5 Air starts with 512GB of storage and can be configured up to 4TB, according to Apple’s 2026 announcement. Apple says MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro start at 1TB and models with M5 Max at 2TB; verify the storage for the exact Pro configuration on the live listing. Choose capacity against the applications, files, and project libraries you expect to keep on the laptop. If you need more space later, a compatible external SSD is an option, not a required accessory.
Which size and chip configuration fits your budget?
Start with the work you need the laptop to do, then choose the screen size and configuration that suit it. A larger display or higher-tier chip can increase the cost; do not pay for a tier without a task that benefits from it. Review the exact memory and storage configuration as well as local price before checkout, since the launch starting prices above do not represent every build.
