Choose MacBook Air if you need a complete computer you can carry from room to room or take on the go. Choose Mac mini if you mainly work at one desk, already have a monitor and input devices, or want a desktop with more external-display options. Your display needs and the equipment you still need to buy matter as much as the computer itself.
At a glance: which Mac fits your setup?
| Decision | MacBook Air | Mac mini |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Work in multiple places and want one ready-to-use computer. | Work mainly at a fixed desk or already own desktop peripherals. |
| Screen and battery | Built-in display and battery; available in 13.6-inch and 15.3-inch sizes. | No display listed in the box contents; designed to connect to a separate display. |
| Keyboard and pointing device | Built-in keyboard and trackpad. | Requires a keyboard and pointing device unless you already have compatible ones. |
| External displays | Apple lists support for up to two external displays, alongside the built-in screen. Check supported resolutions and refresh rates. | Apple lists up to three external displays for the base configuration shown. Limits vary by configuration; check your chosen model. |
| Connections | Two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, MagSafe 3, and a headphone jack. | Front USB-C ports and headphone jack; rear HDMI, Ethernet, and Thunderbolt ports. Port type depends on configuration. |
| What to include in your budget | Add a monitor or dock only if your setup needs one. | Add a monitor and input devices if you do not already own them. |
Choose MacBook Air if you need a computer that moves with you
The Air is the simpler choice for working in different rooms, commuting, or traveling: its screen, keyboard, trackpad, and battery are part of the computer. Apple lists 13.6-inch and 15.3-inch Liquid Retina display options, each rated at 500 nits. The smaller model is easier to carry; the larger model offers more built-in screen area without requiring an external monitor.
Apple states up to 18 hours of video streaming and up to 15 hours of wireless web use for the reviewed models. These are Apple’s estimates under its test conditions, not guaranteed everyday runtimes; actual battery life varies with use and settings. See Apple’s MacBook Air technical specifications.
Choose Mac mini if you are building around a desk
The mini is a desktop computer, not an all-in-one: Apple lists the computer and a power cord as its in-box contents. You need a display and input devices to make a usable workstation unless you already own compatible equipment. If those items are already on your desk, the mini may fit naturally; if not, include them when comparing the cost of a complete setup.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Its connections can suit a desk with wired networking, HDMI, and several connected devices. Apple lists front USB-C ports and a headphone jack, plus rear HDMI, Ethernet, and Thunderbolt ports. The base M6 configuration has three rear Thunderbolt 4 ports; the M5 Pro configuration has three Thunderbolt 5 ports. Ethernet can be configured to 10Gb Ethernet, but that is an option, not a feature to assume on every unit. Check Apple’s Mac mini technical specifications for the configuration you plan to buy.
Match the Mac to your display layout
If you want one screen built into the computer
MacBook Air works on its own and can also connect to external displays. Apple lists support for up to two external displays while the built-in screen is in use. The supported resolutions and refresh rates depend on the display combination, so confirm that your monitors fall within Apple’s listed limits.

If you want several external displays
Apple lists the base Mac mini configuration as supporting up to three external displays. The exact resolution and refresh-rate conditions vary by configuration, and the M5 Pro has different limits from the base model. Do not assume that every mini supports the same display arrangement: check the technical specifications for the exact chip and monitors before choosing.

A fair comparison starts with what you already own. For MacBook Air, account for a monitor or dock only if you want a larger desk setup or additional connections. For Mac mini, add the cost of a monitor, keyboard, and pointing device if they are not already available. You may also need a hub or adapters depending on your peripherals and chosen configuration.
