For most people who need one device for work or study, the MacBook Air is the safer choice: it is a complete laptop with a built-in keyboard and trackpad, more built-in ports, and support for up to two external displays. Choose an iPad Air with Magic Keyboard if tablet portability, touch, reading, and optional Pencil input matter more—and your essential apps work well on iPadOS.

Choose based on the work you actually do
Choose MacBook Air if it will be your only computer
A laptop is the lower-risk choice when a course, employer, or daily routine depends on desktop applications. It is also a better match for managing many apps and files at once, typing for long stretches, or connecting two external monitors. Its keyboard and trackpad are ready to use without buying an accessory.
If your work depends on a particular application, exam or testing software, peripheral, or file-handling workflow, confirm that it works on macOS before buying. The same check is essential before relying on an iPad—but the MacBook is the safer default when you do not yet know whether an iPadOS substitute will be adequate.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose iPad Air with Magic Keyboard if tablet use is central
The iPad makes more sense if you want to move between a typing setup and a touchscreen tablet, read or annotate documents, or use handwriting and drawing in your work or classes. Apple lists support for Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C); a Pencil is an additional purchase and is only worthwhile if you will use it.
The iPad Air is also available with cellular connectivity, which may suit work away from Wi-Fi. Confirm the model and service availability for your location, and check that your required apps and institutional tools are capable on iPadOS before making it your only computer.

For routine tasks, compare the setup—not just the device
Writing, web research, online coursework, and video calls can work on either device. The deciding factors are usually the apps you need, complete setup cost, preferred screen size, typing comfort, handwriting needs, file workflow, and monitor or peripheral setup—not a claim that one is universally faster or more productive.
What iPadOS changes—and what it does not
Apple describes iPadOS 26 as adding a windowing system for organizing and switching between apps, a menu bar for app commands, and updates to Files. These changes improve multitasking and file-management options, but iPadOS is not macOS. A desktop version of an app may not have an equivalent iPad app, and an iPad app may behave differently even when it handles the same documents.

Before choosing an iPad as your main work or school device, check the exact tools you must use: required desktop software, exam or testing apps, specialized applications, and any connected peripherals. Verify compatibility with the app provider, school, or employer rather than assuming that an app with a similar name will cover the same tasks.

The iPad offers a tablet form factor when you remove it from the keyboard, while the MacBook is a laptop throughout. Consider how often you would actually use touch or handwriting, and whether you prefer a tablet for reading or annotation. If the iPad will mostly stay attached to its keyboard, compare it as a typing setup rather than assuming tablet versatility alone justifies the extra accessory.

The MacBook Air also includes two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, MagSafe 3, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. A hub may help with particular setups, but choose one only after checking the monitor’s resolution and connection, charging needs, and the peripherals you intend to attach. The iPad’s one-display limit may be decisive if your work depends on using two external monitors.
Battery life: treat Apple’s figure as a claim, not a head-to-head result
Apple states up to 18 hours of battery life for the M5 MacBook Air. That is Apple’s manufacturer figure, not an independent comparison with the iPad Air. The available product information does not establish a directly comparable battery test for both setups, so do not use the figure alone to infer which will last longer in your own workload.
