The best-supported lightweight alternative to the MacBook Air right now is the Dell XPS 13 (2026), provided you avoid the 8GB base configuration if you multitask. It starts at 2.2 lb, and TechRadar’s lab test recorded more than 16 hours of video playback. No single laptop is “best” for everyone, though. The right pick depends on whether you want to leave macOS, which apps you need, and what configuration you can afford.

The shortlist at a glance

This is not an exhaustive ranking of the market. The evidence behind it covers the models below, and it does not include matched, current configurations from every major vendor such as HP or Microsoft. Prices and configurations change often, so check them locally before buying.

Laptop Best for Key facts (source) Main caution
Dell XPS 13 (2026) Students and everyday Windows users 2.2 lb starting weight; 2K LCD non-touch or 3.2K OLED touch; up to 64GB memory and 4TB SSD (Dell) 8GB base model slowed under heavy multitasking (TechRadar)
Dell XPS 14 (2026) Buyers who want a bigger screen and more options Up to 64GB RAM; 120Hz OLED touchscreen (RTINGS) RTINGS says the MacBook Air has much longer battery life and holds performance better under sustained load
ASUS Zenbook A14 Ultralight Windows-on-ARM buyers Under 1 kg; USB4, HDMI, USB-C and USB-A (Windows Central) Check app and peripheral compatibility first
Lenovo ThinkPad X9 15 Aura Edition (2025) Those who want a larger premium laptop with more ports Larger 120Hz OLED display, strong keyboard and touchpad (RTINGS) Costs more and is less portable; not a like-for-like Air substitute

Dell XPS 13 (2026): the everyday pick

Dell’s US comparison page lists the XPS 13 at a 2.2 lb starting weight and positions it for students and everyday users. You can choose a 2K LCD non-touch display or a 3.2K OLED touch display, so name the exact screen when you compare prices. The OLED option changes the experience noticeably, and it is the one to look at if you watch a lot of video or care about display quality.

Battery: claim versus test

Dell advertises “up to 17 hours of streaming,” which is a manufacturer claim. TechRadar’s student laptop guide measured 16 hours 17 minutes of video playback in its own lab test. The two figures were produced under differently described conditions, so treat them as evidence that video-playback endurance is strong. Don’t read either as a promised real-world runtime. Web browsing, video calls and a bright OLED screen will usually give you less.

Configuration matters

TechRadar found that the base model with 8GB of RAM slowed in demanding programs and heavier multitasking. The family’s maximum specifications (64GB, 4TB) don’t describe that base unit. If you keep many browser tabs open, run several apps at once, or plan to keep the laptop for years, price a model with more memory.

Dell XPS 14 (2026): more screen, more headroom

RTINGS’ best laptops roundup says the XPS 14 offers up to 64GB of RAM and a 120Hz OLED touchscreen. It is the choice for people who want a larger display and more configuration flexibility. RTINGS also notes in its comparison that the MacBook Air has much longer battery life and maintains performance better during sustained workloads. If battery life away from a charger is your top priority, that matters.

ASUS Zenbook A14: light, but check compatibility

Windows Central’s Windows on ARM guide describes the Zenbook A14 as weighing under a kilogram, with USB4, HDMI, USB-C and USB-A ports. That port mix is unusually generous for a laptop this light.

It runs Windows on an ARM processor, so confirm that the software you depend on works. Check specialist apps, older utilities, VPN or security clients, and any printers, drivers or peripherals. If everything you use runs in a browser or has an ARM-native version, this is a strong ultraportable. If one critical program doesn’t, choose a conventional Windows laptop instead.

Lenovo ThinkPad X9 15 Aura Edition (2025): the larger alternative

RTINGS describes a larger 120Hz OLED display, a strong keyboard and touchpad, and more ports. The trade-offs are higher cost and lower portability. Consider it if the MacBook Air 15-inch is closer to what you want, and skip it if a small, light carry is the whole point.

Should you leave the MacBook Air at all?

For comparison, Tom’s Guide’s 2026 laptop roundup reports US starting prices for the MacBook Air M5 of $1,299 (13-inch) and $1,499 (15-inch), with over 15 hours of battery life in its account. These are US review-roundup figures that may have changed, so check Apple’s current pricing.

The decision comes down to a few questions:

  • Do you depend on macOS-only software or the Apple ecosystem? If yes, an alternative will cost you more in friction than it saves.
  • Do you want a touchscreen or OLED? The XPS options offer these, which is a common reason to switch.
  • Do you need long unplugged use or sustained performance? RTINGS favors the MacBook Air on both against the XPS 14.
  • Do you need more ports? The Zenbook A14 and ThinkPad X9 15 are better served here.

Checklist before you buy

  • Operating system and app compatibility: especially for any ARM-based model.
  • Weight: compare the exact configuration, since starting weights can change with options such as touch screens.
  • Screen: size, panel type (LCD or OLED), touch, and refresh rate.
  • Memory and storage: avoid the lowest RAM tier if you multitask.
  • Ports: count what you actually plug in, including HDMI and USB-A.
  • Battery evidence: note whether a figure is a lab test or a manufacturer claim. Figures from different methods aren’t directly comparable.
  • Local price: configurations and prices vary by market and over time.

The Bottom Line

Start with the Dell XPS 13 (2026) if you want a light Windows laptop for everyday work, and budget for more than 8GB of RAM. Step up to the XPS 14 for a larger OLED screen, consider the Zenbook A14 only after checking your software, and keep the MacBook Air if long battery life and sustained performance matter most.
