For most demanding professional work, start with Mac Studio with M5 Max and choose memory and storage to match your projects. Consider M5 Ultra when your workload can use its much higher memory, GPU, storage, or external-display ceiling—not simply because it is the top model.
Apple’s U.S. starting prices are $2,499 for M5 Max and $5,499 for M5 Ultra. Those are starting points, not like-for-like configured prices; options, region, and taxes change the total. Check Apple’s current configurations and prices before ordering.

These are Apple-published specifications. Display limits depend on the resolution and refresh-rate combination; consult Apple’s Mac Studio technical specifications for the arrangement you plan to connect. Apple lists 460GB/s memory bandwidth for the M5 Max base configuration, configurable to 614GB/s with the 40-core GPU option; M5 Ultra is listed at 1.2TB/s.

Choose M5 Max for demanding work that fits within its capacity
M5 Max is the sensible first configuration to price for many photographers, musicians, software engineers, and designers, as well as video professionals whose work does not require Ultra’s memory, GPU, storage, or display limits. It supports up to 128GB of unified memory, up to 8TB of internal SSD, and up to five external displays. Apple lists hardware acceleration for H.264, HEVC, ProRes, ProRes RAW, and AV1 decode.

For development, design, and media work, look at what you actually keep open and how large your active projects are. If the work fits comfortably within the M5 Max options, paying for Ultra’s higher ceiling may not solve a real constraint.
Choose M5 Ultra when a specific project needs more headroom
Ultra is aimed at work that can use substantially greater compute or capacity, such as real-time grading of uncompressed 8K footage, complex VFX rendering, expansive local AI models, or large datasets. It supports up to 512GB of unified memory, up to 16TB of internal SSD, and up to eight external displays.

Make the case for Ultra by identifying the limit you are hitting: memory pressure, GPU-heavy rendering, internal project capacity, or a display arrangement beyond M5 Max’s support. The 512GB memory option was announced as coming in late October 2026; Apple’s September availability update did not establish that it was shipping on October 7. Check the live store for its availability.
How much unified memory do you need?
Unified memory is shared by the CPU and GPU. More can help when large projects or demanding applications need to stay in memory together, but the right amount depends on the software and workload—not just the job title.

- Start with M5 Max’s 36GB base if your current workload is comfortable at that level and you do not expect to run many memory-heavy tasks at once.
- Consider an M5 Max memory upgrade if your projects and concurrent applications routinely push beyond the base configuration. Its listed choices reach 48GB, 64GB, and 128GB.
- Price M5 Ultra when your work needs more than M5 Max’s 128GB ceiling or can use Ultra’s higher memory capacity for large models, datasets, or complex projects. M5 Ultra starts at 96GB, with options up to 512GB; availability of the maximum option was not yet established for October 7, 2026.
Memory is a configuration decision to make with your expected workload in mind. Use the requirements of your actual applications and the size of the projects you run, rather than buying the maximum by default.
How much internal storage should you configure?
Size the SSD around the data you need on the Mac: active projects, applications, caches, and libraries. M5 Max starts at 512GB and offers options through 8TB; M5 Ultra starts at 1TB and offers options through 16TB. If you plan to keep large active projects internal, include that capacity when comparing configured prices.

Thunderbolt 5 can connect external storage, hubs, and PCIe expansion chassis, according to Apple. External storage can suit archives or project files that do not need to live on the internal drive, but it adds a device and connection to the setup. Choose it for a defined workflow need, not on the assumption that it is included.

M5 Max supports up to five external displays and M5 Ultra up to eight, but the exact supported resolution and refresh rate vary with the number and type of displays. Confirm your complete arrangement in Apple’s display specifications before buying, especially if you need high refresh rates or multiple high-resolution screens.

The rear connectivity is shared: both configurations have four Thunderbolt 5 ports, two USB-A ports, HDMI 2.1, 10Gb Ethernet, and a headphone jack. The front ports differ: M5 Max has two USB-C ports rated up to 10Gb/s, while M5 Ultra has two Thunderbolt 5 ports rated up to 120Gb/s. That difference matters if you frequently connect fast devices at the front; both still have rear Thunderbolt 5.
Mac Studio is sold without a display, keyboard, or mouse. Apple lists the computer and power cord as box contents, so account for suitable input devices and a display if you do not already own them.
How to decide before ordering
- List the real constraint. Note project sizes, applications used at the same time, render or compute demands, internal storage needs, and the number and type of displays.
- Price an M5 Max configuration first. Add only the memory and SSD capacity your work requires, then compare that total with a suitable M5 Ultra configuration.
- Move to Ultra for a concrete reason. Examples include needing more than 128GB unified memory, up to 16TB internal storage, a supported display setup beyond five screens, or higher CPU/GPU capacity that your workload can use.
- Check the live configuration and setup. Confirm current regional pricing and option availability on the Apple Store buy page, and verify displays and accessories against the technical specifications.
How to interpret Apple’s performance claims
Apple’s August 25, 2026 announcement claims M5 Ultra delivers up to 4.3× peak AI compute performance and up to 1.3× higher multithreaded performance versus M3 Ultra. Apple says its tests were conducted in July 2026. These are manufacturer comparisons on selected workloads, not independent benchmarks or a guarantee for a particular application. For choosing between configurations, prioritize the capacity and software demands you can identify in your own work.
