Tom Yager’s August 28, 2009 InfoWorld review, Mac OS X Snow Leopard: Perfection, refined, argued that Apple’s Mac OS X 10.6 combined usability improvements with deeper engineering changes. It was a favorable case for Intel Mac owners considering the upgrade at the time—not a recommendation to use Snow Leopard as a current everyday operating system.

What Yager meant by “perfection, refined”

Yager’s review presented Snow Leopard as a refinement of the Mac experience alongside substantial work beneath the surface. He described changes to Finder and QuickTime X, refinements involving the Dock and Exposé, and improved PDF text flow intended to help accessibility. He also emphasized engineering initiatives: Grand Central Dispatch, 64-bit support, and OpenCL. These are the review’s contemporary observations, not a statement about present-day capabilities or support.

Yager summed up the period installation experience this way: “The upgrade to Snow Leopard couldn’t be easier: Pop in the DVD, open the Install Mac OS X app, and let it rip.” That describes the DVD-based upgrade in 2009; it is not current setup guidance.

Snow Leopard’s published system requirements

Apple’s technical specifications list these general requirements:

  • A Mac computer with an Intel processor.
  • 1 GB of memory.
  • 5 GB of available disk space.
  • A DVD drive for installation.

Apple also notes that some features require internet service. Meeting the general requirements does not mean every Snow Leopard feature is available on every Intel Mac: Apple specifies that Grand Central Dispatch requires a multicore processor and 64-bit support requires a 64-bit processor. The published requirements are from Apple’s technical-specifications page; its publication year is not stated.

What to check before restoring or documenting an older Mac

For a present-day owner, Snow Leopard is chiefly a historical system to document or a possible restoration target for compatible older hardware. Before attempting an installation, check the exact Mac model and processor, memory, available disk space, and whether you can access the required installation DVD or another installation method documented for that model. Also confirm that the legacy applications you need work with the system.

Apple lists an Installation DVD in the original package. Current retailer listings, authenticity, condition, licensing, and compatibility have not been established here; check each before acquiring or using a disc. The system requirements alone do not confirm that a particular Mac model can install or run every feature.

Backups and security context

Apple lists an additional hard drive or Time Capsule as a requirement for using Time Machine. That is storage for the backup feature, not a Snow Leopard-specific upgrade requirement.

Apple’s archive includes Security Update 2013-004 for Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and describes it as improving Mac OS X security. That record documents a historical update; it does not establish that Snow Leopard receives current security maintenance. Do not treat an old update entry as evidence that the operating system is suitable for a modern internet-connected daily-use machine.

How to read the 2009 verdict today

Yager’s original buyer question was whether to buy Snow Leopard. In its 2009 context, his answer rested on the release’s interface refinements and engineering changes. Today, the practical question is narrower: does a specific older Mac and its legacy software require Snow Leopard, and can the installation be done with appropriate media and backups? The review remains useful as a period account of Apple’s priorities, while Apple’s specifications and update archive provide the relevant hardware and historical security details.
