The Mac mini is the better-value desktop if its chip, memory, ports, and display support meet your needs. Choose Mac Studio when your work calls for an M5 Max or M5 Ultra, substantially more unified memory, or its professional connectivity. Apple’s U.S. starting prices are $899 for the M6 Mac mini and $2,499 for the M5 Max Mac Studio—a $1,600 gap between entry configurations, not a like-for-like performance comparison.
What’s the difference between Mac mini and Mac Studio?
The main differences are the available chips, memory ceilings, connectivity, and price. The current Mac mini comes with M6 or M5 Pro; Mac Studio comes with M5 Max or M5 Ultra. Apple lists Mac mini configurations with 16GB to 64GB of unified memory, compared with 36GB to 512GB for Mac Studio. The Studio also offers professional connections including Thunderbolt 5, HDMI, Ethernet, and SDXC card support. Check the exact configuration: port details vary by model, including the Studio’s front USB-C ports.
These are compact desktop computers, so account separately for the display and input devices in your setup. Neither model should be chosen by comparing product names alone: chip, memory, storage, ports, display support, and the demands of your actual apps and projects all matter.
Current models and U.S. starting prices
Apple announced availability for these models on September 22, 2026. The prices below are Apple’s U.S. starting prices, not configured quotes; education pricing is separate and eligibility-dependent.

Which Mac should you buy?
Choose Mac mini if value and sufficient capability are your priorities
Pick the M6 Mac mini when its capabilities fit your workload and the lower entry price matters. Consider the M5 Pro mini if you need its chip tier or Thunderbolt 5. Both are options in a compact desktop, but compare the memory and storage you need against your apps and projects before buying.

Choose Mac Studio when your workload needs its higher-end options
Mac Studio is the relevant choice if you need an M5 Max or M5 Ultra, a memory configuration beyond the mini’s 64GB maximum, or its professional connection options. Apple cites up to 1.2TB/s memory bandwidth and support for up to eight displays for the M5 Ultra Studio; those are Apple-published specifications and capability claims, not independent benchmark results.
How to compare the configurations before buying
- Start with the workload. Identify the apps, project sizes, and tasks you expect to run. For video, 3D, software development, or local AI, name the specific requirement—such as a needed chip tier, memory capacity, or connection—instead of assuming a Studio is automatically necessary.
- Choose the chip tier. Compare M6 and M5 Pro Mac mini with M5 Max and M5 Ultra Mac Studio based on the work and software you use. Apple’s stated performance comparisons are against named prior-generation systems; treat them as Apple’s claims, not independent testing.
- Set the memory and storage you need. Check available configurations and the price of the exact memory and storage choices. The starting-price gap can change when you configure either computer.
- Check ports and displays. Match the exact model’s port type and count, display support, and other connections to your peripherals. The M6 mini has Thunderbolt 4, while the M5 Pro mini and the listed Studio models have Thunderbolt 5; verify each configuration’s full specifications.
- Compare total setup cost. Include the computer, display, input devices, and any storage or connection needs. Confirm current Apple or retailer pricing and availability for the precise configuration you intend to buy.
What Apple’s performance claims do—and don’t—tell you
Apple positions Mac Studio for demanding professional workflows and publishes comparisons with specified previous-generation configurations. Those claims can help identify what Apple intends the systems to handle, but they are not a substitute for independent benchmarks or results from your own software and project sizes. The available information here does not establish a universal performance winner between differently configured mini and Studio models.
