Choose the Mac mini if you want to use a display and accessories you already own—or select them yourself. Choose the iMac if you want a desktop with its display built in and a simpler, integrated setup. The right comparison is between the complete setups, not just the computers: a Mac mini may also require a monitor, keyboard and mouse.
This guide reflects Apple’s Mac mini models announced in August 2026 and available September 22, 2026, alongside the iMac configuration shown on Apple’s comparison page. Prices and specifications are region- and configuration-dependent; check Apple’s current local listings before buying.
What is the main difference between Mac mini and iMac?
The Mac mini is a separate desktop computer. You connect it to an external display and use a keyboard and mouse of your choice. The iMac combines the computer and display in one unit; Apple’s comparison page lists a 24-inch 4.5K Retina display and a keyboard and mouse with the iMac configuration shown.
That distinction drives the decision. A mini can suit a desk where you already have a monitor or want to choose one to match your needs. An iMac suits someone who values an integrated screen-and-computer arrangement. Both are desktop computers, so choose based on how you want your workspace set up rather than treating either as a laptop substitute.

- You prefer the computer and display in one integrated setup.
- You want the 24-inch 4.5K Retina display listed for the iMac configuration on Apple’s comparison page.

Compare the complete setup and price
Apple announced U.S. launch prices of $899 for Mac mini with M6 and $1,699 for Mac mini with M5 Pro. These are Apple’s launch prices, not a check of current sale prices. A fair cost comparison adds any monitor and input devices you need for the mini, then compares that total with the iMac configuration you would actually buy. The available product information does not establish a like-for-like live price comparison between current configurations.
Prices and product availability can vary by country and configuration. Confirm the current iMac lineup, local pricing, and what is included before deciding; do not assume the launch prices above are current prices in your region.

How to interpret Apple’s performance claims
Apple reports that M6 Mac mini delivers up to 4x faster AI performance, up to 2x faster graphics and storage, and 40 percent faster CPU performance than specified previous-generation systems. These are Apple-reported results based on comparison systems and test conditions described in its announcement—not independent benchmarks, and not a guarantee of the speed difference you will see in your own work. Avoid choosing on those figures alone if your decision depends on performance in a specific app.
Choose a display and check compatibility
The iMac configuration shown by Apple has an integrated 24-inch 4.5K Retina display. With Mac mini, the monitor is a separate purchase or an existing component you can reuse. That gives you control over the external screen, but makes it important to confirm the display’s resolution, refresh rate and connection requirements against the exact Mac mini generation and monitor.

Apple’s comparison page includes M4-era details, and Apple Support’s technical page covers the 2024 M4-generation Mac mini. Those older Mac mini specifications and display limits should not be assumed to apply to the 2026 M6 or M5 Pro models. Check the current technical specifications for the exact mini you plan to buy.

Port selection and the number and type of displays you can connect matter most when you have existing equipment or a specific multi-display plan. Apple’s comparison page lists model-specific ports and display support, but its Mac mini details include an older M4 model. Verify the ports and supported display configuration for the 2026 model you select, then check that your monitor and other accessories connect as intended.

Quick Recap
What to verify before placing an order
- Price and configuration: Check Apple’s current listing in your country, including the memory and processor configuration you want. The prices stated here are U.S. launch prices for the 2026 Mac mini models.
- Complete setup: For Mac mini, account for a display, keyboard and mouse if you do not already have suitable ones. Compare the total with the iMac configuration and included items.
- Display and connections: Confirm the selected mini supports your monitor’s resolution and refresh rate, and that its ports meet your connection needs.
- Workload fit: Select a configuration for your actual applications and memory needs. Treat Apple’s performance statements as vendor claims with stated test conditions, not as a direct comparison against iMac.
