For most people buying new, the Mac mini with M4 is the better default: its base model has 16GB of unified memory, twice the base M2’s 8GB, along with front USB-C ports, an extra rear Thunderbolt port and a smaller footprint. The M2 can still make sense if you find one at a compelling price, its memory and display limits suit your work, and the specific unit’s condition and warranty check out.

Quick comparison: what changes between M4 and M2?

Which Mac mini should you buy?

Buy the M4 if you want a new Mac mini for general use

The stronger everyday case for M4 is its 16GB base memory, not a performance percentage. More memory gives you more headroom for having multiple apps and browser tabs open, and can be helpful for heavier creative work. Unified memory is part of the system configuration, so choose the amount you need when buying rather than counting on upgrading it later.

M4 is also the more convenient fit if you regularly connect USB-C accessories at the front or want a compact desktop. Its two front USB-C ports reduce the need to reach behind the computer, while its three rear Thunderbolt 4 ports give you one more than the M2.

Consider the M2 if the actual deal is good and its limits fit

An M2 can be a sensible lower-cost choice if the specific machine costs substantially less than a comparable M4 and you are comfortable with 8GB of memory, two displays at most, and its port layout. Compare the listing’s exact memory and storage configuration, condition, seller, and warranty; those details can differ among used or refurbished units.

Apple announced the M4 Mac mini at a U.S. starting price of $599 on October 29, 2024, with availability beginning November 8, 2024. That is historical launch pricing, not a current quote. No current M2 price is established here, so compare live listings before deciding that the older model is a better value. Apple’s launch announcement provides the dated M4 price context.

Performance: what the specifications can—and cannot—tell you

M4 is a newer chip generation, and its base CPU has 10 cores compared with the M2’s 8; both listed base chips have 10-core GPUs. Those figures describe hardware, but they do not establish a specific real-world speed advantage for M4 over M2. Apple’s launch announcement cites M4 comparisons with M1, not M2, so those claims should not be used to calculate an M4-versus-M2 performance gap.

For a purchase decision, focus on the memory, ports, displays and applications you actually use. If raw performance in a particular task is decisive, look for independent testing of that task and the exact configurations being compared.

Memory and storage: choose the configuration you need

Memory

The base M4 comes with 16GB of unified memory; the base M2 comes with 8GB. Apple lists M4 options of 24GB and 32GB and M2 options of 16GB and 24GB. The 8GB M2 is most appropriate when your workload is modest and you are comfortable keeping the purchase as configured. For multitasking or heavier creative workloads, the M4’s base capacity is the more comfortable starting point.

Storage

Both base configurations list a 256GB SSD, so the base storage figure does not distinguish them. Check the capacity of the exact unit and estimate how much room your applications and files require. External storage can help with a space-constrained setup, but it does not change the internal SSD capacity.

Ports and displays: check your setup before choosing

Port layout

The M4 has two front USB-C ports supporting USB 3 and three rear Thunderbolt 4 ports. The M2 lists two rear Thunderbolt 4 ports and two USB-A ports, with no front USB-C ports listed in Apple’s specifications. Both generations list HDMI and Gigabit Ethernet. Make a quick inventory of your existing drives, displays and accessories: the M2’s USB-A ports may suit older peripherals, while the M4’s front USB-C ports can be more convenient for frequently connected devices.

Display combinations

The M2 supports up to two displays: one up to 6K over Thunderbolt and a second up to 5K over Thunderbolt or 4K over HDMI. Apple specifies up to three displays for M4 configurations, including up to two 6K displays over Thunderbolt plus one 5K display over Thunderbolt or 4K over HDMI. “Up to three” does not mean every combination of resolutions and ports is supported. Match your monitors’ resolution and connection plan against Apple’s page for the model you intend to buy.

Size and desk fit

The M4 enclosure measures 5.0 × 5.0 × 2.0 inches and weighs 1.5 pounds; the M2 measures 7.75 × 7.75 × 1.41 inches and weighs 2.6 pounds. M4 takes much less desk area, while the M2 is flatter. If the computer needs to fit in a particular shelf, mount or space, compare the full dimensions rather than assuming the thinner M2 is smaller overall.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Choose the memory first. If 8GB is too limiting for your workload, rule out the base M2 and compare higher-memory configurations.
  2. Confirm your displays. Write down each monitor’s resolution and whether it connects by Thunderbolt, USB-C or HDMI, then verify the supported combination in Apple’s technical specifications.
  3. Check the connectors you use. Decide whether front USB-C convenience or the M2’s listed USB-A ports matter more to your setup.
  4. Compare exact listings. For either generation, compare memory, SSD capacity, condition, warranty and seller along with price; do not treat the M4’s 2024 launch price as a current offer.
  5. Pick the machine that fits your desk. Account for both width and depth, not only height.

Apple’s Mac mini comparison page can provide another view of listed model differences; use the technical specifications to confirm detailed display and port combinations.
