For most everyday productivity and less demanding creative work, the 2026 Mac mini with M6 is the sensible starting point. Choose M5 Pro when your regular work can benefit from its higher CPU and GPU options, larger memory ceiling, faster memory bandwidth, or Thunderbolt 5 connectivity. Then size memory and storage for the apps and projects you expect to use locally—not just the entry configuration.
Apple says availability for both models began September 22, 2026. The specifications and launch prices below are for the US lineup; check Apple’s current store for the configuration and price available in your region.
Which Mac mini should you buy?
Choose by workload, memory needs, storage habits, and ports rather than by chip name alone. The M6 is aimed at everyday productivity, creative projects, and AI workflows. Apple positions M5 Pro for more demanding work such as app development, video rendering, scientific simulation, 3D, visual effects, and game development. Those are workload categories, not a guarantee that every task will run faster by a particular amount.
| What matters to your setup | M6 | M5 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Processor and graphics | 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU | 15-core CPU and 16-core GPU; configurable to an 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU |
| Unified memory options | 16GB, 24GB, or 32GB | 24GB, 48GB, or 64GB |
| Internal storage options | 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB | 512GB, 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, or 8TB |
| Memory bandwidth | 153GB/s; up to 170GB/s for 24GB and 32GB configurations, according to Apple | 307GB/s, according to Apple |
| Rear Thunderbolt ports | Three Thunderbolt 4 ports | Three Thunderbolt 5 ports |
| US launch starting price | $899; $799 education starting price | $1,699; $1,599 education starting price |
Prices are Apple’s US launch starting prices announced in 2026, not a statement of current transaction prices. Memory and storage upgrades affect the configured total, and prices and availability can vary by region and change over time. Apple’s purchase page showed examples including M6 with 16GB/256GB and 16GB/512GB, and M5 Pro with 24GB/512GB and 64GB/1TB; those listings can change.

Pick M6 for general use and moderate creative work
M6 is the lower-cost tier for web browsing, office work, everyday multitasking, and less demanding creative projects. Apple specifies a 12-core CPU—two super cores, four performance cores, and six efficiency cores—and a 12-core GPU. If your usual tasks fit this profile and you do not need M5 Pro’s connectivity or higher memory options, compare M6 configurations first.
Consider M5 Pro for demanding or memory-heavy work
M5 Pro makes more sense when your work routinely involves large projects, sustained rendering, software development builds, scientific workloads, 3D, VFX, or other tasks that can use its additional CPU/GPU options. It starts with more unified memory than M6 and can be configured with up to 64GB. That extra headroom may also matter if you expect to keep the computer for years while your projects or multitasking demands grow. No independent comparative benchmark is established here, so treat Apple’s positioning as guidance, not a quantified promise for your particular apps.

How much unified memory do you need?
Memory is selected as part of the Mac mini configuration: Apple lists no conventional desktop DIMM upgrade path for these models. Choose based on what you run at the same time and the size of your active work. Ordinary browsing and office applications place different demands on memory than large creative projects, software builds, local AI models, or several resource-intensive apps open together.
- Everyday use: Start by considering M6’s 16GB option if your workload is mainly browsing, documents, and routine multitasking. Whether it is enough depends on your specific applications and habits.
- More demanding or growing workloads: Compare M6’s 24GB and 32GB options, or M5 Pro’s 24GB, 48GB, and 64GB options against the projects you expect to run. Larger projects and more simultaneous apps can make additional memory useful.
- Long ownership period: If you expect to keep the computer for years or anticipate memory-heavy work, weigh the upfront cost of a larger factory configuration against living with the selected capacity.
There is no single memory capacity that is right for every buyer. Identify the apps you use, the scale of your projects, and how much you multitask before paying for an upgrade.

How much internal storage should you choose?
Apple offers M6 with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB of internal storage. M5 Pro ranges from 512GB to 8TB, with 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB choices between those endpoints. Estimate the space needed for installed apps and files you actively use on the computer, such as media projects, photo libraries, virtual machines, datasets, and offline files.
Choose internal storage for files you need close at hand
If your active projects and libraries need to remain on the Mac mini, choose an internal capacity that accommodates them with room for future growth. Check the size of your current files rather than assuming that an entry configuration will fit. The appropriate amount depends on your projects and how long you plan to keep local copies.

Use an external SSD selectively
An external USB-C or Thunderbolt SSD can be a practical place for large libraries, archives, or other files that do not need to stay on the internal drive. Match the drive to the port, sustained-speed needs, portability, and backup plan. External storage does not replace unified memory, and it is not equivalent to internal storage for every workflow. No particular third-party drive has been evaluated for this guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need M5 Pro’s ports?
Both models include front USB-C ports and a headphone jack, HDMI, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and 2.5Gb Ethernet. Apple lists three rear Thunderbolt 4 ports on M6 and three Thunderbolt 5 ports on M5 Pro. A 10Gb Ethernet option is configurable. If your setup depends on particular display, storage, or network capabilities, confirm the exact requirements against Apple’s specifications before choosing a model.

Thunderbolt 5 is a meaningful differentiator when your peripherals and workflow can use it; it is not by itself a reason every buyer needs M5 Pro. If your equipment works with M6’s Thunderbolt 4 ports and you do not need M5 Pro’s other capabilities, weigh the complete configured price against the benefit to your actual setup.
How should you compare total cost?
Compare the price of the configuration you will actually use, not just the chip tier’s starting price. Apple announced US starting prices of $899 for M6 and $1,699 for M5 Pro in 2026; education starting prices were $799 and $1,599. These are launch figures, not current quotes. Memory, storage, region, education eligibility, seller, and current availability can all affect what you pay. Check the live listing before purchase.
- Choose the tier: Decide whether M6 covers your workload or whether M5 Pro’s CPU/GPU options, memory ceiling, bandwidth, or Thunderbolt 5 ports matter to it.
- Set memory: Consider the apps you run together, project sizes, and how long you expect to keep the Mac.
- Set storage: Add up the files and applications you want internal; decide whether an external SSD suits less frequently used or portable libraries.
- Compare configured prices: Check the same memory and storage needs across available models and current sellers in your region.
What do Apple’s performance claims mean?
Apple says M6 delivers up to 40 percent faster CPU performance, up to 4x faster AI performance, and up to 2x faster graphics and storage compared with the prior M4 Mac mini. These are Apple-published comparisons, not independent test results. Apple’s announced comparisons include application-specific figures and test footnotes; the headline claims alone do not establish what a particular buyer’s workload will experience.
Apple lists M6 memory bandwidth at up to 170GB/s and M5 Pro at 307GB/s. These are vendor specifications, not a direct measure of performance in every application. Use them as one configuration difference alongside memory capacity, workload, ports, and price.
