The M4 Mac mini is a meaningful hardware upgrade over the M2, but the available figures do not establish a direct M4-versus-M2 speed multiplier. Apple’s headline performance claims compare the M4 with an M1 or an Intel-based Mac mini—not the M2. Whether an upgrade feels substantial depends on your workload, memory configuration, displays, and peripherals.
Base M4 vs. base M2: What changes?
| Specification | Mac mini with M2 (2023) | Mac mini with M4 (2024) |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | 8 cores | 10 cores |
| GPU | 10 cores | 10 cores |
| Memory bandwidth | 100GB/s | 120GB/s |
| Unified memory | Up to 24GB in the model comparison | 16GB starting; configurable to 24GB or 32GB |
| Ports listed in the model comparison | Two Thunderbolt 4 ports and two USB-A ports | Three Thunderbolt 4 ports and two front USB-C ports; no USB-A |
| External displays | Up to two in the comparison’s base-model table | Up to three with specified resolution and connection combinations |
| US launch base price | $599 | $599 |
The specifications show a newer chip with two additional CPU cores and higher listed memory bandwidth. Those figures are not application benchmarks: core counts alone do not establish performance, and bandwidth does not translate directly into a particular percentage speedup. The matching 10-core GPU counts also do not prove equal graphics performance across generations. The $599 figures are historical US launch prices, not current offers. Apple’s model comparison and the official technical specifications provide the hardware details: Apple’s Mac mini comparison, M2 Mac mini specifications, and M4 Mac mini specifications.
What Apple’s performance claims do—and don’t—show
Apple’s October 2024 launch announcement says the M4 Mac mini delivers up to 1.8 times faster CPU performance and up to 2.2 times faster GPU performance than the M1 Mac mini. Its workload examples also use an M1 Mac mini baseline: up to 1.7 times faster spreadsheet calculations in Microsoft Excel, up to twice as fast on-device AI speech-to-text in MacWhisper, and up to 4.9 times faster panoramic image merging in Adobe Lightroom Classic.
Other launch comparisons use an Intel Core i7 Mac mini: Apple cited up to 2.8 times more audio effect plugins in Logic Pro, up to 13.3 times faster gaming performance in World of Warcraft: The War Within, and up to 33 times faster image upscaling in Photomator. These are manufacturer-published claims against that Intel model, not M2 results. None provides a direct M4-versus-M2 multiplier. Apple’s October 29, 2024 announcement contains the claims and baselines.

#1 Best Overall
- 【Low Power for Always-On AI Workflows】At just 15W TDP, the GEEKOM A7 uses far less power than a traditional 350W desktop, helping reduce electricity costs, heat, and cooling noise during extended operation. That efficiency makes it ideal for keeping cloud AI assistants and AI Agent tasks running in the background—automating document summaries, email polishing, meeting notes, content rewriting, research, and scheduled workflows throughout the day. The energy savings can help recoup the device cost in about 1 year, making A7 a practical choice for 24/7 AI task hosting and efficient everyday computing.
- 【Ryzen 7 7730U – More Than a Low-Power PC】Think low power means less performance? Not here. The Ryzen 7 7730U mini computer packs 8 cores, 16 threads, and up to 4.5GHz, giving you the power to handle multitasking, dozens of tabs, video calls, and creative work smoothly. AMD Radeon Graphics supports 4K playback, multi-display work, photo editing, and casual gaming without a dedicated GPU. Compared with the Ryzen 7 5825U and Ryzen 5 7430U, it delivers up to 20% higher performance for faster response and smoother everyday computing—all in a compact, energy-efficient Mini desktop.
- 【Lock In More Memory Before It Costs More】32GB gives you the headroom most demanding tasks need today—and room to grow tomorrow. Built for heavy multitasking, content creation, large projects, and AI-assisted workloads, the GEEKOM mini pc starts you with twice the memory of a typical 16GB setup, so you can skip an immediate upgrade. With AI driving greater demand for memory, starting with 32GB is a smarter way to stay ready for what’s next. The 500GB PCIe Gen4 x4 SSD delivers fast storage, with support for up to 64GB RAM and 4TB SSD storage when you need more.
- 【Premium Metal Design & 3-Year Warranty】Why settle for plastic? The GEEKOM mini desktop features a premium aluminum alloy chassis that resists daily wear and helps dissipate heat during extended use. Rigorous quality testing and CE, FCC, and RoHS compliance support dependable performance, backed by a 3-year limited warranty and professional support for long-term peace of mind.
- 【One Mini PC, All Your Ports】Stay connected with dual USB-C ports, 5 USB 3.2 ports, dual HDMI 2.0, and a 2.5G LAN port for fast, flexible connectivity. The USB-C ports support high-speed data transfer, display output, and peripheral power, while Wi-Fi 6E keeps streaming, file transfers, and online work fast and reliable. From multiple peripherals to high-resolution displays, everything you need stays within easy reach.
To judge a specific application fairly, look for a benchmark that identifies the exact M2 and M4 configurations, memory capacity, software version, and test conditions. The result should also match the work you care about: single-core or multi-core CPU performance, graphics, media processing, or a task limited by memory. A result for one kind of workload cannot establish how much faster every task will be.
Practical differences for an M2 owner
Memory capacity
The M4 starts at 16GB unified memory and can be configured to 24GB or 32GB; the comparison lists the M2 at up to 24GB. If you are routinely constrained by memory, an M4 configuration with more capacity may address a real limitation. For a fair performance comparison, match memory capacity where possible rather than treating chip generation as the only variable.

USB-C, Thunderbolt, and USB-A
The M4 adds two front USB-C ports and has three rear Thunderbolt 4 ports in the comparison. The listed M2 configuration has two Thunderbolt 4 ports and two USB-A ports. If your M2 setup relies on USB-A accessories, plan for a compatible hub or adapter when moving to M4; otherwise, the front USB-C ports may be a more convenient way to connect frequently used devices.
External displays
The comparison lists support for up to two displays on the M2 base model and up to three on M4 with specified resolution and connection combinations. Check Apple’s M4 technical specifications against your monitors’ resolution, refresh rate, and connection method before relying on a multi-display setup. The maximum display count does not mean every combination of monitors will work.

Should you upgrade from M2 to M4?
- Consider M4 if your current Mac mini is limited by memory, your work benefits from the newer hardware, you need the M4’s stated display configurations, or the port changes better fit your setup.
- Keep the M2 for now if it already handles your actual workload and its memory, display support, and ports meet your needs. The published claims cited here do not quantify a direct M4-over-M2 speed gain.
- Compare the exact machines and prices if buying used, refurbished, or new. Launch prices are historical, and current availability and pricing can vary.
