Yes—the M4 Mac mini can serve as an always-on home server if the services you want run on macOS. Apple explicitly supports using Mac mini as a server or network-attached storage (NAS) device, with built-in file sharing and remote access. The key is to finish initial setup, make the network address dependable, prevent sleep, and configure remote management before disconnecting the display and peripherals.

Is the M4 Mac mini a good fit for your home server?

It is a practical choice for services that support macOS, such as shared files, media or file-management apps, databases, and other compatible server software. Apple describes Mac mini as usable as a server or NAS device accessible from another Mac or Windows computer. The computer does not automatically provide every server feature: third-party services require their own installation and configuration.

Choose based on your intended applications, how many services will run at once, how much data you need to store, and how you will back it up. Apple’s documentation establishes the available hardware and macOS controls, not which configuration is sufficient for a particular workload. If an app has specific memory, storage, or network requirements, check its developer’s documentation before buying or setting it up.

What the base M4 Mac mini includes

Apple’s 2024 M4 Mac mini base configuration includes a 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine, 16GB of unified memory, and a 256GB SSD. Apple offers configurable memory options of 24GB or 32GB and internal SSD options up to 2TB. The base model has three rear Thunderbolt 4 ports, two front USB-C ports, HDMI, and Gigabit Ethernet; 10Gb Ethernet is an optional configuration. See Apple’s Mac mini specifications for the listed configurations.

For a home server, the base model is a reasonable starting point when its memory, internal storage, and network connection meet the needs of the intended services. A 256GB internal SSD may be limiting if you plan to keep a large media or file library on the Mac. You can add compatible external storage, but it is optional, not a requirement. Plan a separate backup: additional storage connected to the same computer is not, by itself, a backup against every kind of data loss.

The standard Ethernet port is Gigabit Ethernet. An Ethernet cable can provide a wired connection, but it does not turn that port into 10Gb Ethernet; that capability requires the optional 10Gb configuration.

Set it up before using it headlessly

Complete macOS setup while you can use the Mac mini directly. Apple’s checklist calls for a display, keyboard, pointing device, a strong login password, and the Mac mini’s IP address. Configure and test your chosen remote-management method before removing the peripherals. Apple’s step-by-step instructions are in Set up your Mac mini as a server.

  1. Connect peripherals and complete initial setup. Connect a display, keyboard, and pointing device, then finish the Mac’s setup and create a strong login password.
  2. Connect to your home network. Wired Ethernet is an option for a fixed installation. Record the Mac’s IP address; Apple recommends using DHCP with a manual address so the address does not change.
  3. Choose a server role. Decide whether you will use macOS File Sharing, a compatible third-party app, or both. For third-party software, follow the developer’s installation instructions and note which network port the app uses.
  4. Configure access and security. Enable the remote-management feature you plan to use. Turn on the macOS firewall and check that the relevant server app is allowed to accept incoming connections.
  5. Set sleep and restart behavior. Prevent the Mac from sleeping while it needs to provide services. Configure it to start when power is connected after an outage.
  6. Test from another device. Confirm that you can reach the shared files or application over your home network and that remote management works before leaving the Mac mini without a display.

Share files or use the Mac as a Time Machine destination

macOS includes File Sharing, so a basic file server does not require a separate server application. Turn on File Sharing in System Settings and choose the folders and users you want to share. Apple also documents setting a shared folder as a Time Machine backup destination for other Macs.

From another Mac, you can connect in Finder using Go > Connect to Server and the Mac mini’s IP address. Access from a Windows computer is supported for Apple’s server/NAS use case, but the connection and account setup depend on the sharing configuration. Limit access to the people and devices that need it, rather than sharing folders broadly by default.

Manage the server remotely

SSH for command-line administration

Enable Remote Login in macOS to allow SSH connections. This is useful for running commands, managing files, and restarting services without a monitor attached. Use the Mac’s network address and an authorized account when connecting from another computer.

Screen Sharing for a graphical desktop

Enable Screen Sharing when you want to control the Mac’s graphical interface remotely. Apple notes that Windows users need a third-party VNC client to use Screen Sharing. Set up and test the connection from the device you intend to administer the server with before relying on headless access.

Keep it available and maintain it safely

  • Keep the address stable: A changing IP address can break saved connections or app configurations. Apple recommends DHCP with a manual address for consistent access.
  • Prevent sleep: Configure macOS so the computer does not sleep while it is expected to serve files or applications.
  • Use the firewall deliberately: Keep the firewall enabled and allow incoming connections for the services you actually use. A server app may need a specific port; use its documentation rather than opening ports indiscriminately.
  • Plan for power loss: Set the Mac mini to start automatically when power is connected after an outage. This does not ensure every application will resume serving automatically.
  • Check app startup after restarts: Apple warns that some server apps may need to be relaunched after a restart, including one caused by an outage or macOS update, unless configured to start automatically.
  • Choose an update approach: Automatic updates are optional. Apple recognizes that some users may prefer to install updates manually; whichever approach you choose, account for the possibility of a restart and confirm that services return afterward.
  • Back up shared data: A shared folder can serve as a Time Machine destination for other Macs, but maintain a backup strategy that fits the data and protects against loss of the server or its storage.

What to expect from power use

Apple lists 4 W idle and 65 W maximum for the 2024 M4 Mac mini with 16GB unified memory and a 256GB SSD. Apple’s figures are measured at the wall and include power-supply and system losses; its definition of idle is power use with only Finder open under default power-management settings. These are Apple’s test figures, not a measured draw for a particular always-on server workload, so they do not establish your electricity cost. See Apple’s Mac mini environmental report.

Before you leave the Mac mini unattended

  • The macOS setup is complete, and you have recorded the Mac mini’s network address.
  • Your server app or shared folders work from another device on the network.
  • You have tested SSH or Screen Sharing, whichever remote-management route you selected.
  • The Mac stays awake, the firewall allows only the needed services, and the computer is configured to start after power returns.
  • You know whether each server app starts automatically after a restart, and have a backup plan for important data.
