That figure is a controlled video-playback result—not a promise of 22 hours during every kind of work. Apple’s performance percentages are also task-specific claims, not universal speed guarantees.
What Apple announced
On January 17, 2023, Apple announced M2 Pro and M2 Max for updated 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models. M2 Pro also became available in Mac mini. The chips build on Apple’s M2 family and target demanding professional workloads. Apple’s announcement described performance and efficiency improvements; Apple’s 16-inch MacBook Pro (2023) technical specifications list the model’s battery and playback details.
What “up to 22 hours” means
Apple reported up to 22 hours of Apple TV app movie playback for the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro. Its test used a preproduction system with a 12-core CPU, 19-core GPU, 16GB of memory and a 1TB SSD. Apple played HD 1080p content in the Apple TV app with display brightness set eight clicks from the bottom. The 16-inch 2023 model’s specifications also list a 100-watt-hour lithium-polymer battery.
This is a specific playback test, not an estimate for browsing, video calls, software development, rendering or mixed day-to-day use. Apple says actual battery life varies by use and configuration. The “up to” wording matters: it describes a maximum under stated conditions, not a runtime every owner should expect.

How much faster are M2 Pro and M2 Max?
Apple gave different performance figures for different workloads and comparison chips. They should be read as Apple’s announcement claims for the named tasks, rather than as a single overall speed rating.
| Chip and measure | Apple’s stated result | Comparison |
|---|---|---|
| M2 Pro multithreaded CPU performance | Up to 20% faster | 10-core M1 Pro CPU |
| M2 Pro graphics | Up to 30% faster | M1 Pro |
| M2 Max graphics | Up to 30% faster | M1 Max |
| M2 Pro Xcode compilation | Up to 2.5 times faster | Fastest Intel-based MacBook Pro |
| M2 Pro Photoshop image processing | Up to 40% faster | M1 Pro |
| M2 Pro Photoshop image processing | Up to 80% faster | Intel Core i9 MacBook Pro |
Apple’s release gives test-system and configuration details in its footnotes and characterizes the results as approximate. A percentage tied to one workload and baseline should not be applied to a different app, an entire workflow or every M1- or Intel-based MacBook Pro.

M2 Pro or M2 Max: the practical distinction
The most useful distinction in Apple’s published specifications is graphics capacity and memory. M2 Max offers higher ceilings for GPU cores, unified memory and memory bandwidth; M2 Pro can be sufficient where those maxima are not needed. The announcement positions M2 Max for demanding graphics and larger-memory workflows, but does not establish that it is the better choice for every professional or task.
| Specification | M2 Pro | M2 Max |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Up to 12 cores | 12 cores |
| GPU | Up to 19 cores | Up to 38 cores |
| Unified memory | Up to 32GB | Up to 96GB |
| Memory bandwidth | 200GB/s | 400GB/s |
These are maximum or listed chip specifications from Apple’s announcement, not a claim that every MacBook Pro configuration includes those top-end components. For graphics-heavy work or projects that require more memory, M2 Max’s higher limits are relevant. For a choice between configurations, match the actual application and project demands to the configuration rather than relying on the chip name alone.

What the announcement does—and does not—establish
Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Technologies, Johny Srouji, said in the announcement: “Only Apple is building SoCs like M2 Pro and M2 Max. They deliver incredible pro performance along with industry-leading power efficiency,” This is Apple’s promotional characterization. The announcement and technical specifications establish the company’s stated chip options, test conditions and claims; they do not provide independent performance or battery testing.
