The right MacBook Pro depends on more than its M-series number. M1, M2, M3 and M4 each cover different screen sizes and chip tiers, so a 13-inch base-chip model is not a direct stand-in for a 16-inch Pro or Max model. Compare the exact size, chip tier, memory and workload first; then decide whether a newer generation is worth the price for you.
What “M1 vs. M2 vs. M3 vs. M4 MacBook Pro” actually compares
These labels describe families, not four equivalent laptops. Apple’s product selector identifies the following broad lineups:
| Generation | Base-chip MacBook Pro | Pro and Max models |
|---|---|---|
| M1 | 13-inch M1 | 14- and 16-inch M1 Pro or M1 Max |
| M2 | 13-inch M2 | 14- and 16-inch M2 Pro or M2 Max |
| M3 | 14-inch M3 | 14- and 16-inch M3 Pro or M3 Max |
| M4 | 14-inch M4 | 14- and 16-inch M4 Pro or M4 Max |
Screen size and tier matter: the 13-inch M1 or M2 is a different class of machine from a 14-inch Pro or a 16-inch Max. Even within one generation, memory, storage, ports and external-display support can vary by model and configuration. Apple’s current selector also includes later-generation MacBook Pro models, so M4 is the newest generation covered in this guide, not necessarily Apple’s newest generation overall.

1. Screen size and portability
The legacy M1 and M2 base-chip MacBook Pro models are 13-inch laptops. The newer family map starts at 14 inches, with 14- and 16-inch Pro and Max options. Apple specifies the newer display sizes as 14.2 and 16.2 inches diagonally when measured as standard rectangles. The larger screen offers more workspace, but the size itself is a trade-off you should weigh alongside the chip.
2. Base, Pro or Max chip tier
Generation answers when a chip family arrived; tier indicates where a model sits within that family. Compare base with base, Pro with Pro and Max with Max where possible. A newer base-chip machine may not be the better fit than an older Pro or Max if your work benefits from that model’s performance tier, display size or memory capacity. Exact outcomes depend on the specific models and applications.
3. Unified memory and project size
Memory capacity affects how much work a computer can keep readily available. Apple specifies 16GB starting unified memory and support for up to 32GB in the 14-inch M4 base model. Apple stated a maximum of 128GB for the M3 Max MacBook Pro in its 2023 announcement. Those numbers belong to different tiers: they do not make the M3 Max and M4 base model equivalent comparisons. For large creative projects, development environments or other memory-intensive work, check the exact configuration rather than relying on the generation label.

4. Sustained workload, not just a headline speed claim
For web, school and office work, the practical difference between generations may matter less than the difference between two configurations or the cost of replacing a working laptop. Long editing sessions, software builds, 3D rendering and compute-heavy workloads make chip tier and memory more consequential. Apple’s “up to” results are claims for specific workloads and model pairings, not a universal speed multiplier.

5. Ports and external displays
For the 14-inch M4 base model, Apple specifies three Thunderbolt 4 ports and support for two high-resolution external displays in addition to the built-in display. Apple says M4 Pro and M4 Max models offer Thunderbolt 5. Do not assume these details apply to prior generations or every configuration; verify the exact model’s specifications if a dock, monitor setup or transfer speed is central to your decision.
6. Price, condition and warranty
Apple announced U.S. launch prices in 2024 of $1,599 for the 14-inch M4 base model, $1,999 for the starting 14-inch M4 Pro configuration and $2,499 as the starting price for the 16-inch M4 model. These are historical launch prices, not current retail or used-market prices. A current listing depends on location, configuration, condition, seller and warranty. Compare those details directly, especially when weighing a refurbished Pro or Max model against a newer base model.

7. Features that need a model-level check
Before buying, verify the specific machine’s display, camera, battery, wireless capabilities and external-display limits. Apple notes that battery life varies with use and configuration, so a generation-wide runtime claim would be misleading without a comparable test and configuration.
What Apple’s published performance figures do—and do not—show
Apple’s announcements provide useful examples of possible gains, but each figure applies to its named comparison and workload. They are manufacturer-reported results, not independent cross-generation tests.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Apple-reported result | Comparison and workload | Announcement |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1.8× faster | 14-inch M4 MacBook Pro versus 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro for gigapixel photo editing | Apple, 2024 |
| Up to 3.4× faster | 14-inch M4 MacBook Pro versus 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro when rendering complex scenes in Blender | Apple, 2024 |
| Up to 60% faster | 14-inch M3 MacBook Pro versus 13-inch M1 for Final Cut Pro rendering | Apple, 2023 |
| Up to 40% faster | M3 Pro versus 16-inch M1 Pro in selected workflows, including cited Photoshop filter and function performance | Apple, 2023 |
| Up to 2.5× faster | M3 Max versus 16-inch M1 Max in Apple’s stated comparison | Apple, 2023 |
These are “up to” results, not guarantees that every application—or every M4 configuration—will be faster by the same amount. They also do not establish a single M1-to-M4 ratio that applies across all tiers. No independent, comprehensive M1-through-M4 benchmark or battery comparison is established here; use the figures as workload-specific context, not as a substitute for comparing the exact machines you are considering.

Which MacBook Pro should you buy?
Choose a base-chip model for everyday work
If your routine is browsing, documents, schoolwork and general productivity, start with the base-chip models that fit your budget and screen preference. The 14-inch M4 base model has 16GB starting unified memory, supports up to 32GB and has 120GB/s memory bandwidth, according to Apple’s 2024 specifications. Confirm that its memory, ports and display support meet your needs before paying extra for a higher tier.
Consider a refurbished M1 Pro, M1 Max, M2 Pro or M2 Max for higher-tier needs
If a refurbished older model is in contention with a newer base M4, decide first whether you value the older machine’s larger screen, Pro or Max tier, or memory headroom more than the newer base model’s generation. Then compare the actual configuration, condition, warranty and price. A chip generation number alone cannot settle that trade-off.
Match Pro or Max to sustained creative and technical work
For long-running video and photo work, software builds, 3D rendering or other demanding tasks, compare Pro and Max configurations and the memory your applications need. Apple positioned M3 Pro for demanding workflows and M3 Max for extreme workloads such as machine-learning programming, 3D art and video editing. That is Apple’s product positioning, not a guarantee that every application will benefit equally. Check the requirements and behavior of your own software.

Is it worth upgrading from M1 to M4?
It can be worthwhile if your current M1 is limiting a specific task, you need a feature or configuration the exact M1 model lacks, or your workload would benefit from moving to a different chip tier. Apple’s M4-versus-M1 results show substantial “up to” gains in selected photo-editing and Blender tasks, but they compare a 14-inch M4 with a 13-inch M1 and do not predict every user’s experience.
If the M1 still handles your work comfortably, a generation change alone is not a reason to replace it. If you are considering an M1 Pro or M1 Max, compare it with the M4 model you can actually buy: screen size, tier, memory, configuration, condition and price may matter more than the generation number.
Quick Recap
A short buying checklist
- Identify the exact model: screen size, generation, and base, Pro or Max tier.
- Match memory and storage to your applications and project sizes.
- Check the model’s ports and support for your external displays.
- Compare the workload you care about, not an “up to” figure in isolation.
- For a used or refurbished laptop, assess its condition, seller, warranty and configuration.
- Check current local availability and pricing; historical U.S. launch prices are not current quotes.
