LXLE is an Ubuntu/Lubuntu LTS-based Linux distribution with the LXDE desktop, described by its project as an option for aging PCs. The latest ISO located in the project’s SourceForge archive is dated May 30, 2022. That archive date does not establish whether LXLE is still maintained, whether its packages receive security updates, or whether a supported upgrade path exists.
What is LXLE?
LXLE is a Linux distribution whose project page describes it as based on Ubuntu/Lubuntu LTS and built around an optimized LXDE interface. The project page also lists preinstalled applications, themes, wallpapers, and 32- and 64-bit editions. Those are descriptions on a legacy page whose headline still promotes LXLE OS 16.04.4, so they should not be treated as verified specifications for a current release. LXDE is a modular desktop environment described as lightweight in Ubuntu community documentation. It was Lubuntu’s standard desktop through Lubuntu 18.04 LTS; Lubuntu switched to LXQt starting with 18.10. What is the latest LXLE version?
The latest dated ISO artifact located in the project’s SourceForge archive is “LXLE-Focal-Release.iso,” modified on May 30, 2022. The archive also lists 18.04.3 32-bit and 64-bit ISO files modified on September 8, 2019. These are the latest artifacts located in that archive, not proof that no later version exists elsewhere. Is LXLE still supported?
The archive date by itself cannot answer whether LXLE is active or discontinued. The cited project pages do not establish a current maintainer announcement, a support policy, a security-update commitment, or supported upgrade instructions. Before installing LXLE on a network-connected computer, check the project’s current channels and determine the support lifecycle of the specific Ubuntu base release used by the ISO. Without confirmation of updates and a supported upgrade route, an old ISO carries uncertainty that matters for security and long-term use.
Ubuntu’s own current support statements apply to Ubuntu, not automatically to LXLE. For context, Canonical’s Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS release notes, published April 23, 2026, state five years of security updates and critical bug fixes through April 2031. Can you use LXLE on an old computer?
Possibly, but the available evidence does not provide a verified LXLE minimum requirement or a hardware compatibility list. The LXDE project recommends at least 1 GiB of RAM for using applications such as a browser, video player, and office suite. That is general LXDE guidance, not an LXLE-tested minimum, and it does not guarantee that a particular application or modern website will work acceptably on a specific machine. LXDE project
Do not substitute Ubuntu Desktop’s requirements for LXLE’s. Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 lists a 2 GHz dual-core processor or better, 6 GB of system memory, and 25 GB of free storage; those figures are requirements for that Ubuntu Desktop release, not LXLE. Ubuntu Desktop download and requirements

For a computer with very limited memory, an older processor, or unusual graphics and wireless hardware, check compatibility for the exact machine and the applications you need. The sources do not include a like-for-like benchmark, so there is no substantiated performance ranking here. The LXDE project suggests checking local computer recyclers for low-budget hardware. How does LXLE compare with a current lightweight Linux option?
Compare support and security-update horizon before choosing by desktop appearance or claims about speed. Then check whether the distribution supports your computer’s processor architecture and devices, whether it has enough memory and storage for your workload, what applications it includes, and whether installation, upgrades, documentation, and community help are current. LXLE’s archive dates and the LXDE background help describe the project, but they do not provide a current, like-for-like comparison with other distributions.

How would you install LXLE?
Installation normally involves writing a distribution’s ISO image to a USB flash drive and booting the computer from it. Ubuntu’s official guide explains that general process for Ubuntu Desktop; it is not LXLE-specific, and it does not establish an LXLE-required USB capacity or speed.
