A conjunction is an apparent close alignment between celestial objects; a lunar occultation is when the Moon passes in front of a background object and hides it. In short, every lunar occultation involves an apparent alignment, but a conjunction does not necessarily involve a cover-up.
What is the difference between a conjunction and a lunar occultation?

The U.S. Naval Observatory defines conjunction using bodies’ apparent ecliptic longitude or right ascension as viewed from a third body; NASA describes it more simply as objects appearing to pass closest together in the sky. Neither definition means the objects are physically close. In a June 2026 example, Venus and Jupiter appeared near each other during a planetary conjunction while remaining millions of miles apart in space (NASA’s June 2026 skywatching guide; NASA’s solar-system overview).
How does a lunar occultation look?
During a lunar occultation, the Moon moves directly in front of a background object from the observer’s point of view on Earth. The object can seem to blink out at one edge of the Moon and reappear at another. NASA describes this as a brief hiding; the U.S. Naval Observatory’s broader definition of occultation is one celestial body obscuring another with a greater apparent diameter, commonly the Moon passing in front of a star or planet (U.S. Naval Observatory glossary; NASA).
The terms can overlap in everyday skywatching descriptions. A Moon and planet may be called a close conjunction generally, while observers in the right viewing path witness the more specific event: the Moon covering the planet. The key distinction is whether the apparent alignment actually results in one object obscuring the other.

Why can one observer see an occultation while another sees only a close pairing?
The Moon’s apparent position shifts slightly depending on where an observer is on Earth. As a result, the cover-up is limited to a geographic path. Within that path, the Moon can pass across the background object; outside it, the observer may still see the Moon and object near each other without seeing the object disappear. NASA’s 2026 Venus example illustrates this difference between locations in and outside the event path (NASA’s June 2026 skywatching guide; NASA’s lunar occultation of Venus).
Check an event prediction for your specific location and date before planning to watch. The time, visibility, daylight, sky conditions and the background object’s brightness affect what you can see. A past event listing does not establish visibility for a future date.

Does conjunction have other astronomy meanings?
Yes. The term also appears in the technical labels “inferior conjunction” and “superior conjunction” for Mercury or Venus relative to the Sun. NASA describes inferior conjunction as the planet passing approximately between Earth and the Sun; at superior conjunction, the Sun lies between Earth and the planet. If the planet disappears behind the Sun, NASA calls that an occultation (NASA’s solar-system overview; NASA’s guide to transits, occultations, conjunctions and eclipses).
Can you safely watch a lunar occultation?
Many events can be watched without special equipment, but some occultations happen in daylight or near the Sun. NASA warns that looking at the Sun or near it through binoculars, a telescope or a camera without proper solar-safe equipment can cause serious eye injury. Do not point optical equipment toward the Sun unless it is properly equipped for solar viewing (NASA’s June 2026 skywatching guide).

Why do astronomers observe occultations?
Occultations can also support scientific measurements. In NASA’s Lucy mission work, astronomers used observations of a star being briefly blocked by an asteroid to study the asteroid before the spacecraft’s encounter. NASA reported that 37 telescopes were used in one coordinated Eurybates campaign in Nevada; that figure describes that specific campaign, not the equipment needed to watch a lunar occultation. Lucy occultation science lead Marc Buie described the visual effect: “It really does look like a star just vanished” (NASA’s account of the Lucy occultation campaign).
