If an LSI 9206 adapter in a Dell PowerEdge R620 is not showing drives, first find out where they disappear: during adapter initialization, at the controller, or only in the operating system. The symptom alone does not prove the card or drives are faulty. Identify the card’s complete model and trace its connection through the R620’s drive backplane before changing firmware or buying parts.
1. Identify the exact controller and backplane
“LSI 9206” is not enough information to prescribe a firmware image, cable, or replacement. Record the complete model suffix from the card label, its internal or external port layout, any Dell or SC8000 branding, and any firmware information shown during startup. Also identify the R620 backplane type and whether the card connects directly or through existing server cabling.
- Note which card ports are connected and where those cables terminate.
- Record the backplane configuration and the number and type of installed drives.
- Do not treat a card with a different suffix, port layout, or firmware as interchangeable just because it is described as a 9206.
Dell’s PowerEdge R620 Owner’s Manual identifies the hard-drive backplane as the drive connection path and recommends drives tested and approved for that backplane. Check the configured backplane before selecting a replacement drive.
2. Does the R620 detect the adapter?
Watch startup messages and check the system or device inventory for the controller. If it does not appear there, investigate adapter seating, the PCIe slot, and platform recognition before focusing on individual disks. A controller that is not initializing cannot enumerate drives.

Dell provides official manuals and system resources on its PowerEdge R620 Manuals & Documents page. The exact startup screens and inventory labels can vary with the controller and firmware.
3. Trace the connection to the drive backplane
If the controller initializes, inspect the physical storage path with the server safely powered down. Confirm that the card ports connect to the intended backplane ports, then check that the relevant connectors are fully seated and that the cabling matches the card’s port layout and the server’s backplane.

Dell cautions against removing or installing a drive while the server is running without first checking the storage-controller documentation to confirm hot-swap support. In its Hard Drives instructions, Dell says the host adapter must be configured correctly to support hot-swap removal and insertion. Do not assume that a drive is safe to pull just because its carrier is accessible.
4. Find out whether the controller sees the drives
Check the adapter’s own device listing or a supported controller utility, then compare that result with the operating system’s disk list. This separates a hardware-path or controller problem from an operating-system enumeration problem.

- Compatible with: D3307/LSI 9300-8i; Controller: LSI/Broadcom SAS3008 (9300-8i class).
- Firmware (FW): HBA IT Mode (Non-RAID); Data Transfer Rate: SAS 12Gb/s (backward-compatible with SATA 6Gb/s).
- Host Interface: PCIe 3.0 x8; Internal Connectors: 2× Mini-SAS HD SFF-8643. Direct attach up to 8 drives, and expand via external SAS expander for large arrays.
- PERFECT FOR: ZFS, FreeNAS/TrueNAS, unRAID, Proxmox/ESXi passthrough, JBOD NAS builds.
- Packing List: HBA Card ×1
- Controller does not list a drive: Recheck the drive, its carrier, backplane connection, cable path, and controller configuration. If possible, compare with another known-good, appropriately supported drive or connection, changing one item at a time.
- Controller lists the drive, but the operating system does not: Investigate the operating system’s driver and device enumeration. The commands and tools depend on the OS, which is not specified here.
- Neither the adapter nor its drives appear at startup: Return to card detection, seating, slot, and platform recognition rather than replacing drives first.
5. Verify controller mode and intended use
Decide whether the system is meant to expose individual disks or provide RAID, then check that the exact adapter model and firmware mode support that behavior. Broadcom’s controller functionality reference distinguishes RAID and JBOD behavior and notes that IT firmware is relevant to some HBA functions. It does not establish R620-specific compatibility, so verify the exact card rather than assuming that all 9206 variants behave alike.
6. Treat firmware claims as leads, not a diagnosis
A ServeTheHome thread about an LSI 9206 in an R620 discusses a card taken from an SC8000. Participants speculate that appliance firmware could be involved and suggest a firmware image, but the discussion does not verify the cause of this symptom or establish a safe image for every 9206. A TechYorker overview also identifies initialization, firmware mode, and cabling or backplane presentation as areas to investigate; these are diagnostic possibilities, not confirmed findings for your server.

Before considering a flash or replacement, confirm the board’s exact model, current firmware, intended RAID or HBA behavior, and official instructions, and make sure important data is backed up. The available information does not identify a safe firmware image or flashing procedure for an unspecified card. Do not flash a suggested image based only on a forum post.

If testing shows a failed card, cable, backplane, or drive, match any replacement to the exact hardware and use case. For a controller search, “LSI SAS 9206-16e HBA” is only a product-search lead—not confirmation that this specific card is the correct replacement. Check the physical card label, connector locations, cabling, firmware mode, and required disk behavior before buying. If a drive is the suspected fault, follow Dell’s approved-drive guidance for the configured R620 backplane rather than assuming any drive will work.
