ls++ is a Perl command-line utility that adds colorized directory listings and selectable columns to the familiar ls workflow. Its predefined views can show file permissions, owners, timestamps and sizes in different orders, while unrecognized options are passed through to ls. It is an alternative for people who want more detail in terminal listings, not a new standard ls implementation.
What ls++ does
The project describes itself as “colorized ls on steroids.” In practice, ls++ formats directory listings using a chosen view, letting you put useful metadata before or alongside each filename. It is written in Perl and identified as using the Perl Artistic License. The project repository and an independent overview describe its purpose and features.
The documented command form is ls++ [OPTION]... [FILE].... You can select one of its predefined views with a long option; the default documented view is --tpsf.

For example, use --potsf when you want ownership information included, or --pf for a more compact permissions-and-name view. The available documentation lists these views but does not establish additional configurable column combinations.
Show hidden files with familiar ls flags
ls++ documents passing unknown parameters through to ls. Use -a to include all entries, including . and .., or -A to include hidden entries while omitting those two directory entries. For example:

ls++ -a— include all entries.ls++ -A— include hidden entries except.and...
Because those flags are handled by the underlying ls, their precise behavior follows the ls available on the system where you run ls++.
Install ls++ from source or CPAN
The repository documents two Perl-based installation routes: build from a source checkout, or install the App::lsplusplus distribution through CPAN. A local Perl library path is also documented for users who do not want a system-wide installation.

Build from the repository
- Clone the project:
git clone https://github.com/magnusw/lsplusplus.git - Change to the cloned project directory:
cd lsplusplus - Generate the build files:
perl Makefile.PL - Build the software:
make - Install it:
make install
Install through CPAN
Run cpan App::lsplusplus to install the CPAN distribution. Follow the CPAN client’s prompts and use the local-library setup documented by the project if you prefer not to install into system Perl directories.
macOS dependencies
The repository’s macOS instructions list Term::ExtendedColor and File::LsColor as Perl dependencies to install before building. Consult the project installation instructions for the applicable commands and any platform-specific details.

Is ls++ a replacement for ls?
It can serve as a more informative, colorized listing command for interactive terminal use, and familiar options such as -a and -A are passed through according to the project documentation. It remains a Perl utility layered around the system’s ls, rather than a universal drop-in replacement with independently established behavior across platforms.
The available project documentation establishes its views, colorized purpose, option passthrough and installation model, but does not provide a cross-platform test matrix or benchmark results. Treat it as a human-facing listing tool; the documentation does not establish that its formatted output is intended as a stable interface for scripts.
