AirDrop uses Apple’s direct peer-to-peer Wi-Fi connection, so LocalSend can be less seamless on guest Wi-Fi or networks that block devices from communicating. LocalSend’s documentation supports that comparison; it does not establish personal installation or performance results.
What LocalSend does—and what it needs
LocalSend is a free, open-source app for sending files and messages between nearby devices over a local network. Its official documentation says it can work without internet access. It supports Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS; the project repository also links to a Fire OS distribution. Check the current download page for release-specific operating-system requirements. LocalSend’s official site lists supported platforms and file types, while its project repository describes the local protocol.
That “without internet” detail does not mean LocalSend works without a network connection. Devices still need a usable local path to reach one another. A router or local hotspot may provide one even when it has no internet service, but not every device-and-hotspot combination is guaranteed to work.
Receiving files and accounts
LocalSend says it does not require an account or login. Received files go to the Downloads folder by default, and the destination can be changed in settings. The app supports photos, videos, documents, text, and other file types, according to its official site.

Why LocalSend can feel less seamless than AirDrop
The important tradeoff is the connection path. LocalSend relies on devices being able to communicate over the local network. AirDrop’s documented connection model is different: Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) helps nearby Apple devices discover one another, then Apple’s peer-to-peer Wi-Fi carries the transfer directly, without an internet connection or wireless access point. Apple says that connection is encrypted with TLS. Apple’s Platform Security guide describes the AirDrop model.
| Factor | LocalSend | AirDrop |
|---|---|---|
| Device ecosystem | Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS, according to LocalSend’s official documentation | Apple devices |
| Connection and discovery | Devices communicate over a reachable local network | BLE discovery followed by direct peer-to-peer Wi-Fi |
| Access point or internet | No internet is required, but a usable local network path is | Apple documents transfers without an internet connection or wireless access point |
| Documented security controls | HTTPS communication and optional PIN verification | TLS encryption and identity checks associated with Contacts Only mode |
| Comparative speed data | No benchmark established in the cited project documentation | No benchmark established in the cited Apple guide |
This matters most on networks where devices are deliberately kept apart. Guest Wi-Fi often enables access-point isolation, which prevents clients from connecting directly. Managed workplace networks may impose similar restrictions. In those situations, both devices can be connected to the same Wi-Fi name and still fail to find each other through LocalSend. AirDrop’s direct-link design avoids dependence on a wireless access point.

- 2 in 1: USB C + USB 3.0, 32GB usb c flash drive has dual ports, usb 3.0 port is applied to all devices which have usb 3.0 interface and usb c port is widely used in all Android smartphones with OTG function
- High Speed USB 3.0: Read speed up to 90 MB/s, Write speed up to 30 MB/s, the speed of USB 3.0 interface is faster than USB 2.0, save time to wait, increases work productivity. Note: Speed will be limited if you use the USB key in the USB 2.0 interface
- Large Compatibility: The USB 3.0 Connector is compatible with USB 3.0 & USB 2.0 backward USB 1.1 devices, such as Laptop, Desktop, Car Audio, Tablet, TV, Speakers, Projector. USB-C port is compatible with all Android Smartphones
- Expand Storage: Good performance in storing, transferring and sharing digital data with families, friends, colleagues, customers. It can expand the capacity of smartphone, you can watch movies or share pictures when you go on vacation with your family
- Note: Make sure your smartphone is equipped with OTG function and need to open OTG function in Settings when you plug memory stick, then you can transfer easily data bewteen different devices
How to make LocalSend work when devices cannot find each other
LocalSend’s repository identifies network reachability, firewall configuration, and operating-system permissions as common things to check. The project lists incoming TCP and UDP port 53317. Allowing the app through a firewall can help, but it will not overcome a router that isolates its clients.
- Confirm the network path. Connect both devices to the same local network, then check whether it allows devices to communicate with each other. A guest network or client-isolation setting can block them even when they share the same Wi-Fi name.
- Check firewall access. Make sure LocalSend is allowed through the relevant firewall. The project documents incoming TCP and UDP port 53317; follow its current setup instructions for the device and operating system.
- Review operating-system restrictions. LocalSend’s troubleshooting notes flag Windows networks configured as public and missing Local Network permission on macOS or iOS. Check the system’s network and privacy settings if the receiving device does not appear.
- Recheck discovery after a change. Reopen the app or refresh its device list after changing network or permission settings. If the router isolates clients, try a network that permits device-to-device communication rather than assuming a firewall change will fix it.
Security: useful protections, not a blanket verdict
LocalSend says its local communication uses HTTPS, with a TLS/SSL certificate generated for each device; its site also describes transfers as HTTPS-encrypted and offers optional PIN verification. Apple documents TLS encryption for AirDrop and identity checks associated with Contacts Only mode. These are documented safeguards, not evidence that one app is categorically safer in every situation.

Encryption in transit does not prevent a person from choosing the wrong recipient, nor does it make every reachable device trustworthy. Confirm the recipient before sending, and consider the network and the app’s available verification controls when sharing sensitive files. The cited product documentation does not constitute an independent security audit.

Transfer speed depends on the network and devices. LocalSend’s project guidance suggests trying 5 GHz Wi-Fi for slow transfers and notes an Android speed issue, but it does not provide comparative benchmark results against AirDrop. There is no documented basis here for claiming that either option is universally faster or more reliable.

- Plug-and-Play Convenience: No software or drivers required; simply insert into USB-C or USB-A ports and start transferring files instantly
If a transfer is slow, first look at the network connection and device conditions. Trying 5 GHz may be worth considering when it is available, but that is a troubleshooting lead, not a guaranteed fix or a requirement to buy new hardware.
