Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A local LLM’s context limit and the memory available for its KV cache are separate constraints. Context length is how many tokens the model and runtime can process in a sequence; the KV cache holds attention state for tokens already processed so generation can reuse it. A model may support a long context on paper yet fail to run a request that long if its runtime cache pool or available memory is too small.
What do context length and KV cache mean?
Context length
Context length is the number of tokens a model and inference runtime can process in a sequence. A token may be a word, part of a word, or punctuation. The sequence can include prompt text and tokens generated so far, so a long conversation or document leaves less room for a response under a fixed limit.
KV cache
During autoregressive generation, a model predicts tokens one at a time. Attention layers produce keys and values for tokens, and the runtime can retain those tensors in a key-value (KV) cache. Later generation steps reuse the saved state instead of recalculating it for all earlier tokens. The cache is stored across model layers and has dimensions that include sequence length and attention-related dimensions. Hugging Face explains the cache tensors and their role in generation.
Why does a longer context use more memory?
In a conventional full-attention cache, processing more tokens adds more key and value state. Memory use therefore depends not only on token count but also on the model’s cached layers, key/value heads, head dimension, cache data type, and number of simultaneous sequences. The attention design matters too: sliding-window layers can stop growing after their window, while chunked or hybrid designs behave differently. Hugging Face’s cache-strategy documentation describes these differences.

Cache bytes ≈ cached layers × 2 (keys and values) × tokens × KV heads × head dimension × bytes per value × concurrent sequences

This is a starting point, not a promise of the runtime’s actual allocation. Quantization metadata, padding, paging, hybrid layers, and implementation-specific memory pools can change the result. You also need room for model weights and other runtime memory.
Why can’t I use the model’s full context window?
Three limits need to be checked separately: the model’s supported context, the maximum sequence length configured in the runtime, and the capacity of the runtime’s KV cache pool. A configured maximum does not guarantee that the pool can hold a request of that size. For example, the vLLM.cpp server reference documents a token pool based on configured block count and block size; requests longer than the pool cannot be scheduled. In vLLM, cache memory can be budgeted per GPU, and insufficient capacity under long-context workloads can lead to request preemption. See vLLM’s cache and optimization configuration.

When a request is rejected or interrupted, check the model and runtime limits, the actual cache-pool setting, the available device memory, and how many sequences the server is handling. A larger advertised context setting alone does not resolve a cache-capacity bottleneck.
How do dynamic, static, and offloaded caches differ?
| Cache approach | How it works | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Dynamic | Grows as tokens are processed. | Allocates in response to use; capacity still depends on available memory and runtime behavior. |
| Static | Reserves a set cache capacity in advance. | Can enable compilation optimizations, but may reserve capacity or perform work that short requests do not use. |
| Offloaded | Moves most layer cache state to CPU memory and transfers it as needed. | Saves GPU memory, but data movement can reduce throughput. |
Hugging Face identifies DynamicCache as the default cache class for all models in its documentation. Whether a strategy is available depends on the model and runtime. Check the cache strategy documentation for implementation details.

Should I quantize the KV cache?
Cache quantization stores cache values at a lower precision, which can reduce memory use and make room for longer sequences or more concurrent work. It is a capacity trade-off, not an automatic speed improvement: Hugging Face warns that quantization can harm latency for short contexts when GPU memory is already sufficient. vLLM documents FP8 cache options and ways to keep selected sensitive layer types in their native dtype. Neither source establishes a universal quality penalty or speedup. Hugging Face’s guidance and vLLM’s quantized KV-cache documentation describe available approaches.
Compare the same model, prompts, context sizes, and runtime with and without quantization. Check both latency and output behavior; results from one setup do not establish what another will do.

Does sliding-window attention provide unlimited context?
No. A sliding-window layer can stop adding cache state after it reaches its configured window, even if a larger maximum sequence length is specified. That describes how the cache grows; it does not mean information outside the window remains directly available to every layer or that the model has unlimited effective context. Hugging Face’s cache documentation covers this allocation behavior.
What should I do if the KV cache runs out of GPU memory?
- Reduce the requested context. Set the sequence limit to what the workload actually needs rather than the largest advertised value.
- Reduce simultaneous sequences. Serving multiple requests increases aggregate cache demand; check the engine’s concurrency and cache-pool settings.
- Consider cache quantization. Use it only if the runtime supports it, and test latency and output behavior on your workload.
- Consider CPU offloading. It can free GPU memory, but transferring cache state can lower throughput.
- Check the memory budget and deployment options. If cache capacity remains the bottleneck, more GPU memory or distributing model/cache work across devices may help, depending on runtime and model support.
vLLM’s documentation describes the relationship between cache allocation, long-context capacity, and preemption in its supported serving setup. Review the relevant vLLM configuration options before changing a deployment.
How should I compare two local LLM setups?
- Model-supported context limit and runtime-configured maximum sequence length.
- Cached layer count, KV-head count, head dimension, and cache data type.
- Cache strategy: dynamic, static, offloaded, paged, sliding-window, or hybrid where applicable.
- Total cache-pool budget, memory left for weights and runtime overhead, and supported concurrency.
- Measured latency and throughput on the prompts and number of simultaneous sequences you actually use.
Runtime options and feature support are version-sensitive. For instance, the cited vLLM configuration page is for vLLM v0.31.0, so confirm flags and behavior against the documentation for the version you run.
