A liquid staking token (LST) is a transferable token issued in connection with pooled staked assets. On Ethereum, it can represent a claim associated with ETH delegated through a staking pool, while letting the holder keep a token they may transfer or use elsewhere. It is not the validator deposit itself, and “liquid” does not mean risk-free or instantly redeemable.
What is a liquid staking token?
Ethereum staking pools combine deposits so participants can stake without each operating a validator. In a transparent on-chain pool, a smart contract can accept ETH, allocate it to node operators, and issue a receipt token to the depositor. Ethereum.org describes most such tokens as ERC-20 claims associated with staked ETH and rewards. The token holder does not thereby control the validator or its withdrawal credentials. This describes an on-chain staking pool, not every product marketed as staking. An exchange’s custodial “earn” product may hold assets on the customer’s behalf, and its yield may not come from validator staking. Check who controls the assets and how returns are generated rather than assuming the label means the same thing everywhere.
How do liquid staking rewards appear?
Protocols account for rewards in different ways. Ethereum.org uses stETH and rETH as examples of two common designs:

Rewards are net of the pool’s fee. The accounting method alone does not establish that one design is safer or more profitable than the other. Wallet displays, applications, and tax or accounting treatment may also handle balance changes differently, so consult the protocol’s documentation for the specific token.
Can an LST trade below ETH?
Yes. An LST’s market price can fall below the value of the ETH associated with it. That market price is set by buyers and sellers; it is not necessarily the amount or timing a holder can obtain through protocol redemption. Selling during a period of low liquidity or stress can lock in a discount.

Redemption is a separate route. Depending on the protocol, a holder may need to submit an unstaking request, wait through a queue, and later claim ETH. Ethereum withdrawal throughput is constrained, and providers handle withdrawal processing differently. The token’s tradability therefore does not guarantee immediate conversion at a one-to-one market price.
What risks should you check?
Market price and liquidity
- Check the LST/ETH price and the depth of the markets where you would sell. A displayed quote may not be available for a large trade.
- Consider whether you could tolerate selling at a discount if you needed to exit quickly.
Redemption process and queue
- Read the protocol’s current unstaking instructions, including request and claim stages, fees, and queue behavior.
- Do not assume that a secondary-market sale and protocol redemption have the same price, timing, or requirements.
Validator operations
Validator downtime can reduce rewards, while slashing can impose penalties. Whether and how those losses affect token holders depends on the pool’s rules. Review operator selection and distribution, and consider the possibility of correlated failures involving operators or clients.

Smart contracts and governance
The contracts that issue, account for, and redeem an LST can contain bugs or be changed through upgrade controls. Governance may also affect fees, operators, or other pool rules. Look for code transparency, audit information, and who can authorize changes; an audit can reduce uncertainty but cannot make a contract risk-free.
DeFi composability
Using an LST in lending, a liquidity pool, or another DeFi application adds that application’s risks to the staking-pool risks. For example, a price drop can affect collateral value and contribute to liquidation, while thin liquidity can make it harder to exit a position. Evaluate each application separately rather than treating the token’s “liquid” label as a guarantee of ready cash.

Custody and product identity
With a self-custodied on-chain LST, you hold the token in your wallet, but still depend on the pool’s contracts and operators. With a custodial exchange product, the provider controls the assets under its terms. Confirm whether the product actually stakes through validators and who is responsible for withdrawals.

There is no universal sequence: provider rules, interfaces, fees, and queue conditions vary. The usual choice is between selling the token on a secondary market and redeeming it through the protocol.

- Identify the token and its issuer. Use the protocol’s official documentation to confirm the token contract and supported redemption route before interacting with a site or application.
- Compare the available exits. Check the current LST/ETH market price and liquidity alongside the protocol’s redemption terms, fees, request or claim steps, and estimated queue conditions.
- Choose a route. A market sale exchanges the token with a buyer at the available market price. Protocol redemption follows that provider’s process and may involve waiting; it is not necessarily immediate.
- Follow the provider’s current instructions. If redemption requires submitting a request and later claiming ETH, complete both stages using the official interface and verify transaction details before signing.
- Confirm receipt. Check the transaction and destination wallet or account to verify that the expected ETH arrived. If a request remains pending, consult the provider’s documented queue and support process rather than submitting duplicate transactions.
Ethereum.org notes that pooled holders generally rely on provider-specific contracts and operators to handle withdrawals; they do not personally perform the validator withdrawal process. The exact steps and wait depend on the pool and current conditions. Ethereum’s withdrawal overview describes the underlying withdrawal process.
How to compare liquid staking protocols
Compare protocols using the same practical questions, rather than assuming that a particular token format or headline yield settles the decision.
- Reward accounting: Does the balance rebase, or does the ETH exchange rate change?
- Redemption: What are the request and claim steps, fees, and current queue conditions?
- Contracts and upgrades: Are contracts and audits documented, and who can upgrade them or change key parameters?
- Operators: How are operators selected and distributed, and what permissions or concentration risks exist?
- Fees: What share of rewards does the pool retain, and how can that fee change?
- Token market: How deep is the LST’s trading market, and how has its price related to ETH?
Ethereum.org’s page, last updated August 17, 2026, says liquid staking protocols account for around a third of all staked ETH. It presents this as an approximate figure without a precise measurement date or methodology, so it should not be read as a live market share. Ethereum.org’s pooled-staking page provides context on the category.
What an LST does—and does not—change
An LST can make a pooled staking position transferable, but the holder remains exposed to the pool’s contracts, governance, and operators as well as Ethereum staking and market risks. A self-custody wallet can give you control of the token, but it does not remove those risks or guarantee redemption at par.
