Linux 7.1 removes the x86 kernel configuration selections for M486, M486SX, and AMD ELAN processors. The change is a first, limited step in dropping support for these processor families—not evidence that every AMD ELAN-related driver or subsystem was removed.

What changed in Linux 7.1?

An upstream x86 change removed three processor-family selections from kernel configuration: M486, M486SX, and MELAN, the option associated with AMD ELAN. It also removed related 486 and ELAN build and module-version references. The commit and the v7.1 x86/platform pull request describe the work as a first minimal step.

That scope matters: the change concerns processor-family support selections in the x86 configuration. It does not establish that every ELAN-specific driver, device, or subsystem disappeared in the same commit.

Why were the options removed?

Ingo Molnar’s commit message says x86-32 includes complicated hardware-emulation facilities for very old 32-bit CPUs that very few people use with modern kernels. He argues that maintaining this compatibility code can consume developer time when it causes problems. “Very very few” is the author’s qualitative description; the commit does not provide a usage count.

AMD RYZEN 7 9800X3D 8-Core, 16-Thread Desktop Processor
  • The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
  • 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
  • 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
  • Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
  • Cooler not included

The commit also quotes Linus Torvalds: “I really get the feeling that it’s time to leave i486 support behind. There’s zero real reason for anybody to waste one second of development effort on this kind of issue.” This is Torvalds’ view as quoted in Molnar’s commit message, not a measured assessment of how many users are affected.

Can a 486 PC still run Linux?

The commit says people who need legacy support can continue using older kernels. That is a suggested path, not a promise that a particular older kernel will remain available, receive security fixes, or work with every 486-based system. Whether an older kernel is practical depends on its own support status and the maintenance policy of the distribution providing it.

If you need ongoing support from current kernels, the change is a reason to check the kernel and hardware requirements of the specific distribution you plan to use. Upstream kernel configuration and a distribution’s decisions about packaging, backports, and maintenance are distinct; the cited upstream material does not specify what any distribution shipped.

When does the change apply?

The change was merged into the tip tree’s x86/platform branch on March 30, 2026. In an April 13, 2026 pull request, Ingo Molnar listed it among x86/platform changes for v7.1. Greg Kroah-Hartman’s Linux 7.1.7 stable announcement is dated August 6, 2026, confirming that the 7.1 stable series existed by then.
